Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
“Who signed it?””
My voice barely came out.
But everyone in that room heard me.
Adrian looked at the laptop screen.
Then at me.
Then away.
That small movement answered my question before he ever opened his mouth.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the laptop.
“No.””
I shook my head slowly.
“No, don’t do that.””
“Do what?”” Adrian asked.
“Look away like you don’t know.””
His face changed.
For years, I had studied every expression on his face.
I knew when he was nervous before a business meeting.
I knew when he was pretending to enjoy a meal he hated.
I knew when he was lying about buying me a surprise gift.
And right now…
He was lying.
“Adrian.””
He swallowed.
“Olivia, you need to let me explain.””
I laughed.
A broken, empty sound.
“Everyone always says that right before they destroy your life.””
Camille wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Olivia, please.””
I turned toward her.
“Please what?””
She flinched.
“Please understand that this wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””
“Then what way was it supposed to happen?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
I closed the laptop.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Because if I moved too fast, I was afraid I would break apart.
“I want the truth.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“I can explain everything.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the moment something inside me changed.
Before tonight, I was still fighting for him.
Even after seeing him with Camille.
Even after hearing him say he was leaving.
A small, foolish part of me was still waiting for him to choose me.
But standing there, watching him struggle to explain why my name was on a document I never signed…
I realized I wasn’t waiting for my husband anymore.
I was waiting for the truth.
“January 16,” I said.
Adrian looked at me.
“What?””
“That’s the day you went to the clinic.””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why was I listed as the patient?””
His jaw tightened.
“It was complicated.””
“Complicated?””
I stepped closer.
“My name was used without my permission.””
“Olivia—”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“No more excuses. No more protecting me from the truth. I’m done being the last person to know what is happening in my own life.””
The baby moved beneath my dress again.
I placed my hand over my stomach.
A strange calm came over me.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t just fighting for myself.
I was fighting for her.
Adrian looked at my hand.
His expression softened.
“Olivia, I never wanted to hurt you.””
I stared at him.
“But you did.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to stand in your own house and watch your husband choose another woman. You don’t know what it feels like to wonder if every memory you have was real.””
“Everything between us was real.””
“Was it?””
His face fell.
I hated that a part of me still cared.
I hated that hearing his pain still affected me.
But then I remembered Camille sitting on our couch.
I remembered his hand around her waist.
I remembered him telling me to leave.
“Tell me about the signature.””
Adrian looked at Camille.
A silent conversation passed between them.
And I saw it.
The same thing I had seen all night.
They were connected.
They had a world I was not part of.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
“I signed something.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Not your name.””
“Then what?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I signed a consent form.””
“For what?””
He looked at the floor.
“The clinic.””
My breathing became shallow.
“You signed paperwork at a fertility clinic using my information?””
“I was trying to help.””
“Help who?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked toward the front door.
“I need to leave.””
Adrian immediately moved.
“Olivia, no. You’re upset.””
“I’m pregnant, Adrian.””
“I know.””
“Then stop acting like I’m emotional and start acting like you understand what you did.””
He reached for the door.
“Where are you going?””
“Somewhere I don’t have to look at you.””
“Olivia.””
I turned.
“What?””
For a second, he looked like the man I married.
The man who held my hand during thunderstorms.
The man who cried when we saw our first ultrasound.
The man who promised me I would never face anything alone.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Too late.
I stared at him.
“I wish I believed you.””
Then I opened the door.
But before I stepped outside, Camille spoke.
“Wait.””
I stopped.
I didn’t turn around.
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“You should know why he did it.””
I slowly looked back.
She was crying now.
Not the fake tears I expected.
Real ones.
And somehow, that made everything worse.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked at Adrian.
“Tell her.””
Adrian’s face became pale.
“Camille.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You already ruined her life. At least give her the truth.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“What truth?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then he said something I never expected.
“The baby wasn’t supposed to happen.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked broken.
“The clinic was for me.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I had a genetic issue.””
I didn’t understand.
“Adrian…”
“The doctors told me there was a possibility I couldn’t have biological children.””
My chest tightened.
“But I’m pregnant.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you acting like this is impossible?””
He looked at Camille.
Then back at me.
“Because the clinic found something.””
My fingers went cold.
“What?””
He whispered:
“They found that my fertility test results were not what we thought.””
I waited.
“Meaning?””
He didn’t answer.
Camille did.
“Meaning Adrian’s sample couldn’t have created a pregnancy.””
The room tilted.
I grabbed the wall.
“No.””
My mind rejected the words.
No.
That couldn’t be true.
I had been married to Adrian for five years.
I had never betrayed him.
Never.
My baby was his.
She had to be.
“Adrian…”
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You think I cheated?””
“I don’t know what happened.””
“You don’t know?””
His silence destroyed me.
“You think I slept with someone else.””
“I’m saying there are questions.””
Questions.
That word was cruel.
Because he wasn’t asking me.
He was accusing me.
I walked closer.
“Then why didn’t you ask me?””
He looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would leave.””
I almost smiled.
“You were afraid I would leave?””
My voice shook.
“You’re the one who brought another woman into our house.””
“Olivia—”
“No.””
I pointed toward Camille.
“You chose her before you even knew the truth.””
Camille looked down.
And that told me something.
She knew.
She had known.
“How long?””
Adrian froze.
“How long what?””
“How long have you believed I betrayed you?””
He didn’t answer.
I nodded slowly.
“Months.””
His silence confirmed it.
“Months.””
I whispered the word.
Then I laughed softly.
“That’s why you changed.””
Adrian looked at me.
“That’s why you stopped touching me.””
“Olivia…”
“That’s why you stopped talking about baby names.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“That’s why you started staying late at work.””
He said nothing.
“And Camille was there.””
I looked at her.
“She was the person you talked to when you were angry with me.””
Camille whispered, “I was trying to help him.””
“Help him?””
I stared at her.
“You helped my husband believe I was a liar?””
Her face crumbled.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“Yes, you did.””
I picked up my coat.
My hands were shaking.
But my voice was steady.
“I don’t know whose baby I’m carrying.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Olivia.””
“But I know one thing.””
I looked directly at him.
“I carried this child alone while you investigated me like I was a stranger.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I never stopped loving you.””
I swallowed the pain.
“Maybe that’s the saddest part.””
I opened the door.
The cold air hit my face.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I looked at the screen.
The same person who sent the messages was calling.
Adrian saw it.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face changed.
Because he knew something.
Something he still hadn’t told me.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, I answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
“Olivia?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
Then she whispered:
“I’m the nurse who handled Adrian’s appointment.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why are you calling me?””
Her voice shook.
“Because the paperwork you saw wasn’t the worst part.””
I looked back at Adrian.
He was standing frozen in the middle of our living room.
The woman continued.
“The person who changed your medical records…”
She took a shaky breath.
“Wasn’t Adrian.””
My blood ran cold.
“Then who was it?””
The nurse was silent for three seconds.
Then she said a name.
May you like
A name that made me drop my phone.
“Olivia… it was Camille.””
