Chapter 1: The Guest Nobody Wanted
“Take that dog away before the cameras arrive.””
Vanessa Whitmore said the words with a smile still painted across her face, as if she were discussing flowers for the dinner tables instead of ordering the disappearance of a living creature.
I was standing in the hallway of the Cole estate with a silver tray in my hands when I heard her.
The same mansion where my family had worked for three generations.
The same mansion where people whispered the name Darius Cole like it carried the weight of an entire city.
And the same mansion where an old dog named Bruno had spent eleven years protecting the man who built it.
Vanessa looked perfect that evening. Her emerald dress matched the expensive jewelry around her neck, her hair was styled in flawless waves, and every detail about her screamed control. She was preparing for the engagement party that would announce her future marriage to Darius Cole, one of Chicago’s most powerful businessmen.
She wanted everyone to see a fairytale.
But behind closed doors, she was showing me something else.
“Maya,” she said, turning toward me.
“Did you hear what I said?””
I lowered my eyes.
“Yes, ma’am.””
“Good.”” Her voice became softer, colder.
“Bruno cannot be here tonight.””
I glanced toward the back courtyard where the old brown-and-black dog rested beneath the oak tree.
Bruno was not the young, energetic dog he used to be. His muzzle was gray. His legs moved slower. His eyes had lost some of their brightness.
But that dog still lifted his head every time Darius walked by.
Because Bruno remembered.
Animals remember the people who love them.
Sometimes better than humans do.
“He’s old,” Vanessa continued.
“He’s sick. He’s making the property look neglected.””
I tightened my grip around the tray.
“Mr. Cole cares about him.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Mr. Cole cares about appearances. Tonight, he needs to see that everything is under control.””
I knew that was a lie.
Everybody who knew Darius knew Bruno was not just a dog.
Bruno was the last living connection to Darius’s father, Elijah Cole.
Before Elijah died seven years earlier, Bruno had been his shadow. The dog followed him through the warehouses, sat beside him during late-night meetings, and guarded the family property long before Darius inherited the empire.
Some people inherited money.
Darius inherited unfinished business.
And Bruno had been there through all of it.
“Where do you want him taken?”” I asked quietly.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Somewhere far enough that nobody asks questions.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me like I had forgotten my place.
“It means I’m trusting you to handle a simple task.””
I had worked in that mansion since I was twenty-two years old. I knew when someone was asking and when someone was threatening.
This was a threat.
“Miss Vanessa,” I said carefully, “Bruno belongs to Mr. Cole.””
She laughed under her breath.
“You think that matters?””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it told me everything.
Vanessa did not see Bruno as a dog.
She saw him as a problem.
A problem she needed erased before she became Mrs. Darius Cole.
I walked away without answering.
But I did not leave.
Not really.
I followed the instructions she gave me only long enough to discover the truth.
The old storage room behind the garage was dark when I opened the door.
And there was Bruno.
Locked inside.
The second I saw him, my heart broke.
He was lying on the concrete floor beside an empty water bowl.
His breathing was heavy.
His paws trembled when he tried to stand.
“Bruno…”
His ears moved.
Slowly, he lifted his head.
The moment he recognized me, his tail tapped weakly against the ground.
That little movement nearly destroyed me.
Because even after everything, even after being abandoned in a cold room, he was still happy to see someone.
I rushed over and knelt beside him.
“Oh my God.””
His collar was loose around his neck. The old brass tag that always hung from it was missing.
The tag Elijah Cole had given him.
The tag everyone in the family knew.
I touched the collar.
Someone had taken it.
Why?
A dog’s tag was not valuable.
Unless it held something more than a name.
I grabbed the water bowl and filled it immediately. Bruno drank slowly, almost desperately.
My hands shook.
Someone had planned this.
This was not about keeping a party beautiful.
This was about making Bruno disappear.
I heard footsteps outside.
I froze.
Vanessa’s voice came through the door.
“Maya?””
I stood quickly.
“Yes?””
“Is it done?””
I looked down at Bruno.
His tired eyes looked back at me.
In that moment, I had a choice.
I could obey.
I could protect my job.
I could pretend I never saw anything.
Or I could do what my grandmother always told me.
“Your character shows when nobody is watching.””
I opened the door.
“I’m sorry, Miss Vanessa.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“I can’t do this.””
The silence that followed felt dangerous.
Vanessa stared at me.
“You just refused me?””
“I refused to hurt him.””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea who you’re standing against.””
Maybe she was right.
Maybe I didn’t.
But I knew exactly who I was standing beside.
An old dog who had trusted me.
And sometimes loyalty was the only thing a person had left.
I wrapped a blanket around Bruno and carefully lifted him.
He was heavier than he looked.
Not because of his body.
Because I knew I was carrying a secret.
A secret somebody powerful wanted buried.
The engagement party began forty minutes later.
Music filled the mansion.
Guests arrived wearing designer suits and expensive gowns.
Chicago’s elite walked through the doors, smiling and shaking hands.
Nobody knew that while they were celebrating love, someone inside the house was trying to destroy evidence.
Then the doors to the ballroom opened.
And I walked in carrying Bruno.
Every conversation stopped.
Darius Cole stood near the center of the room in a black suit, surrounded by business partners and family friends.
His eyes immediately found the dog in my arms.
At first, confusion crossed his face.
Then something changed.
His entire expression broke.
The powerful businessman everyone feared disappeared.
The son who missed his father appeared.
“Bruno?””
The room went silent.
Darius walked toward us slowly.
I expected anger.
I expected questions.
Instead, he dropped to his knees.
Right there in front of everyone.
He placed both hands on Bruno’s face.
“Oh my God…”
Bruno pushed his nose against him.
And Darius closed his eyes.
“My father’s boy.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood something important.
That dog was not an embarrassment.
That dog was family.
Then Darius looked at me.
“Maya.””
His voice was calm, but I could hear the storm underneath it.
“What happened?””
I looked across the room.
Vanessa stood near the entrance.
Still smiling.
May you like
Still pretending.
But for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
