Chapter 7: The Loyalty That Was Bought

The photograph sat on Darius Cole’s desk for almost ten minutes before anyone spoke.

Ten minutes.

That might not sound like a long time.

But when you are looking at proof that someone you trusted helped destroy your family, ten minutes feels like an entire lifetime.

I stood near the doorway of the office, watching Darius stare at the picture.

I had seen him angry.

I had seen him hurt.

But this was different.

This was betrayal.

The kind that doesn’t arrive from an enemy.

The kind that walks through your front door, eats at your table, shakes your hand, and learns exactly where you keep your heart.

Malik finally broke the silence.

“I don’t understand.””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Darius looked at him.

“Neither do I.””

Malik picked up the photograph again.

The person standing beside Richard Whitmore was clear.

Leon Graves.

But that wasn’t what made the room feel cold.

It was the second person in the photograph.

The person who had been beside Leon.

The person Malik had trusted.

The person Darius had trusted.

Malik.

“You need to explain this,” Darius said.

Malik looked like he had aged ten years in that moment.

“I can.””

Darius waited.

Malik put the photograph down.

“But I need you to understand something first.””

“What?””

“I never betrayed you.””

The words came out quickly.

Almost desperately.

Darius didn’t respond.

That was worse.

Malik looked at me.

Then back at Darius.

“I knew Richard Whitmore was dangerous. I knew he was involved in things he shouldn’t have been involved in.””

“Then why was he meeting with you?””

Malik closed his eyes.

“Because I was investigating him.””

Nobody moved.

He continued.

“Your father asked me to.””

Darius froze.

“My father?””

Malik nodded.

“The week before he died.””

The room changed.

Because that meant Elijah Cole had known.

He had known something was wrong.

And he had trusted Malik to find the truth.

“What did he tell you?”” Darius asked.

Malik swallowed.

“He told me someone close to the family was leaking information.””

“Who?””

“He didn’t know.””

Malik looked at the photograph.

“But he suspected Richard wasn’t working alone.””

Darius walked to the window.

“My father knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he still died.””

Malik lowered his head.

“Yes.””

That one word carried years of guilt.

I understood then.

Malik had been carrying this burden alone.

Not because he was guilty.

Because he believed he failed.

“What happened that night?”” Darius asked.

Malik stared at the floor.

“I was supposed to meet your father at the warehouse.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Malik hesitated.

And I knew before he answered.

Fear.

“Because I was followed.””

Darius turned.

“By who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Malik’s voice cracked.

“I expect you to believe that I’ve spent seven years trying to find out.””

The office became quiet.

For a moment, Darius looked less like a businessman and more like the son who never got answers.

Then Bruno walked into the room.

Slowly.

The old dog moved toward Malik.

Everyone watched.

Bruno stopped in front of him.

Malik looked down.

“I’m sorry, boy.””

Then Bruno did something unexpected.

He leaned against Malik’s leg.

I watched Darius notice.

Because Bruno had spent the entire night exposing lies.

If Bruno didn’t trust someone, he showed it.

And right now, he was showing trust.

Darius looked away.

“Find Leon.””

Malik nodded.

“We will.””

“No.””

Darius looked at him.

“You and I will.””

Malik understood.

This was not just an investigation anymore.

It was personal.

Later that evening, we discovered Leon had not disappeared randomly.

He had gone somewhere specific.

A storage facility outside the city.

A place rented under a false name.

When Darius, Malik, and the investigators arrived, they found boxes filled with documents.

Photos.

Financial records.

Old security reports.

Proof that someone had spent years building a second life inside the Cole organization.

But the biggest discovery was hidden beneath the floorboards.

A recording.

A small audio device.

The label on it said:

“Elijah — final message.””

Darius stared at it.

His hands shook slightly.

Nobody expected that.

Not from him.

Not the man who had faced criminals without blinking.

Not the man who had built an empire.

But this was his father.

A voice from the past.

A voice he thought he would never hear again.

They played the recording.

Static filled the room.

Then Elijah Cole spoke.

“If you are hearing this, then Bruno found his way to the truth.””

Darius closed his eyes.

The old dog lifted his head at the sound of Elijah’s voice.

“My son,” Elijah continued, “I wish I could have told you everything myself.””

A pause.

“I was betrayed by people I trusted.””

The room was silent.

“I believe Richard Whitmore was only one piece of the plan. The person who helped him had access to my company, my home, and my security.””

Darius looked at Malik.

Then at me.

Elijah’s voice continued.

“But there is one thing you must know.””

The recording crackled.

“The person who betrayed me did not act because of money.””

A pause.

“They acted because they wanted what our family built.””

Everyone listened.

“They wanted the Cole name.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly this was no longer about revenge.

It was about survival.

And somewhere in Chicago, someone was still watching.

May you like

Still waiting.

Still believing they could take everything Darius Cole had built.
