Chapter 4: The Uncle Who Knew Everything

Richard Hale walked into the library like he owned every inch of it.

Maybe he did.

For thirty-one years, the Hale family had built its empire on appearances. Every room in the estate carried his family name. Every painting, every piece of furniture, every carefully preserved tradition existed to remind people of one thing:

The Hales were untouchable.

But standing there, watching Richard smile while Ethan held documents proving his entire childhood was built on lies, I realized something.

Untouchable people were usually the ones who were most afraid of being exposed.

Richard closed the door behind him.

“I was wondering how long it would take.””

Ethan stared at him.

“How long what would take?””

Richard adjusted his cufflinks.

“For the truth to catch up with all of us.””

Vanessa looked furious.

“Richard, you shouldn’t be here.””

He smiled slightly.

“Actually, Vanessa, I think this is exactly where I should be.””

Ethan looked between them.

The confusion on his face was almost painful to watch.

“Someone explain to me why my uncle knows about this.””

Nobody answered.

Richard walked toward the table and glanced at the documents.

Then he looked at Margaret.

“So after all these years, you finally found him.””

Margaret stepped backward.

“You knew.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

He simply looked at her with a calmness that made my skin crawl.

“You always were persistent.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at him.

“It means your mother never gave up looking for you.””

The words struck Ethan.

He looked at Margaret.

“You searched for me?””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Every year.””

Richard walked around the table.

“And every year, we made sure you stayed safe.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“We?””

Richard stopped.

A small smile appeared.

“Now you’re asking the right questions.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Richard, stop.””

He looked at her.

“Why? You wanted to tell him the truth, didn’t you?””

“No.””

Her voice was sharp.

“I wanted to protect him.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“After thirty-one years, you still tell yourself that.””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“What is he talking about?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with pain.

“Ethan, don’t listen to him.””

Richard leaned against the table.

“That’s always been Vanessa’s favorite phrase.””

His voice became colder.

“Don’t listen. Don’t ask. Don’t remember.””

The room felt smaller.

I moved closer to Ethan.

Not because I knew what to say.

I didn’t.

But because he looked like he was standing in the middle of a storm with nowhere to hide.

Daniel Mercer placed his hands on the table.

“Mr. Hale, before this continues, I need to clarify something.””

Richard glanced at him.

“Oh?””

“The documents recovered from St. Mary’s indicate that someone intentionally changed Ethan’s identity.””

Richard smiled.

“And?””

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“And your name appears in the chain of authorization.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Richard recovered quickly.

“Be careful with accusations, Mr. Mercer.””

“I’m not making accusations.””

Daniel tapped the papers.

“I’m showing evidence.””

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Do you really believe a few old documents?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Richard continued.

“Documents can be changed. People can be manipulated. Memories can be twisted.””

He looked directly at Margaret.

“Especially when people desperately want something to be true.””

Margaret’s face went pale.

But she didn’t look away.

“You know what you did.””

Richard smiled.

“You still think you understand what happened.””

“No,” Margaret said.

Her voice trembled.

“But I know what you took from me.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

For the first time, the charming family uncle disappeared.

And I saw something else.

Someone colder.

Someone who had spent years hiding behind a friendly face.

Ethan noticed too.

“Why are you afraid of her?””

Richard looked at him.

“I’m not.””

“Yes, you are.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You’re not afraid she’s lying.””

Nobody spoke.

“You’re afraid she’s telling the truth.””

Richard stared at him.

And for the first time, Ethan looked less like a confused son and more like someone searching for answers.

Daniel opened another file.

“There’s another record.””

Richard’s eyes moved toward him.

“What record?””

“A witness statement.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel removed a document.

“From a nurse who worked at St. Mary’s the night Ethan was born.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“Eleanor.””

Daniel nodded.

“She stated that a man entered the maternity ward hours after Ethan’s birth.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“Who?””

Daniel looked down at the paper.

“She identified him as Richard Hale.””

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Richard didn’t move.

The only sound was the ticking of the old clock above the fireplace.

Ethan slowly turned toward his uncle.

“You were there?””

Richard sighed.

“I was young.””

“That’s your explanation?””

“You don’t know the circumstances.””

Ethan laughed.

A broken laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps telling me I don’t understand.””

His eyes landed on Vanessa.

“But nobody wants to explain.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Not this time.””

His voice cracked.

“No more protecting me.””

That sentence hurt Vanessa more than any accusation could have.

She looked away.

Richard watched them silently.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Your mother did not take you.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Richard leaned forward.

“She saved you from something worse.””

Everyone froze.

Margaret stared at him.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored her.

“You think this story is simple. A mother loses her child. Another woman steals him.””

He shook his head.

“It wasn’t that.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what was it?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa didn’t move.

“Richard.””

“Tell him what happened after David discovered the truth.””

The name changed everything.

Margaret’s expression shifted.

“What do you mean?””

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Your father found out someone was planning to expose the Hale family.””

Ethan stared.

“Why?””

“Because your father discovered financial crimes inside the family business.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Richard continued.

“He threatened to go to the police.””

Margaret’s hands shook.

“David would never have…”

“He would.””

Richard looked at her.

“Because he cared about doing the right thing.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“And then?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“And then he disappeared.””

The room became silent.

“You said he died.””

Margaret’s voice was barely audible.

Richard looked at her.

“I said what I needed to say.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because he didn’t deny it.

He didn’t deny lying.

He didn’t deny knowing.

He simply admitted that he had controlled the story.

Ethan stepped closer.

“You destroyed my family.””

Richard looked at him calmly.

“No.””

He pointed toward the documents.

“Your family was destroyed long before you learned about it.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t believe you.””

Richard smiled.

“That’s because you still think you know who the villains are.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“She never told you the worst part.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Richard, don’t.””

Ethan froze.

“What worst part?””

Richard reached into his coat.

Everyone immediately tensed.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Stained at the edges.

He placed it on the table.

“This belonged to your father.””

Margaret stared at it.

“No…”

Richard looked at Ethan.

“He wrote this before he disappeared.””

Ethan slowly picked it up.

“Why do you have it?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

He read the first sentence.

Then his entire body went still.

I watched his eyes move across the paper.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Ethan?”” I whispered.

He looked up.

And I knew whatever he had just read changed everything.

Because his voice was barely recognizable when he spoke.

“My father didn’t die because of the Hale family.””

He looked at Margaret.

Then Vanessa.

Then Richard.

“He died trying to find me.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan held the letter tighter.

“There’s a name written here.””

Richard’s expression changed.

A flicker of fear.

The first real fear I had seen from him.

Ethan looked at the bottom of the page.

And read the final line aloud.

“The person who took my son…”

His voice shook.

“…was someone I trusted more than anyone.””

The room fell silent.

Then Ethan slowly looked at Richard.

Because the name written beneath that sentence…

May you like

Was not Richard Hale.

It was someone else.
