Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Letter
The room stopped breathing.
That was the only way I could describe it.
Everyone was staring at Ethan.
Not at Richard.
Not at Vanessa.
At Ethan.
Because whatever was written in that letter had changed the direction of the entire nightmare.
A few minutes earlier, we thought we were uncovering the truth about a stolen child.
Now it was something much bigger.
Someone had taken Ethan.
Someone his father trusted.
Ethan stood frozen beside the table, holding the old letter with both hands.
His wedding suit was still perfectly pressed.
The flower pinned to his jacket was still there.
But he no longer looked like a groom.
He looked like a man who had just opened a door to a past he was never supposed to see.
I stepped closer.
“Ethan, what does it say?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes stayed locked on the page.
Finally, he whispered:
“My father knew.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Knew what?””
Ethan looked at her.
“Knew someone was trying to take me.””
A painful silence followed.
Margaret shook her head.
“No…”
She reached for the chair beside her and sat down.
“No, David thought you were gone. He thought…”
Her voice broke.
“He thought you were dead.””
Ethan looked at the letter again.
“He didn’t.””
The lawyer stepped forward.
“Mr. Hale, may I see it?””
Ethan handed him the paper.
Daniel read silently.
His expression changed line by line.
Then he looked up.
“This confirms something important.””
Richard crossed his arms.
“And what exactly is that?””
Daniel looked at him.
“That David Collins was investigating Ethan’s disappearance.””
Richard’s face remained calm.
But his eyes changed.
Only slightly.
Enough for me to notice.
Enough for Ethan to notice too.
“You knew.””
Richard looked at him.
“I knew your father was asking questions.””
“What questions?””
Richard said nothing.
Ethan stepped forward.
“What questions?””
His voice became louder.
“What did he find?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Ethan, please.””
He turned toward her.
“No.””
His eyes were full of pain.
“Every time someone says please, it means they want me to stop asking.””
Vanessa looked away.
That hurt more than anger.
Because she knew he was right.
Ethan looked at the letter again.
“There’s a name here.””
Everyone became still.
He lifted the paper.
“My father wrote about the person who took me.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Be careful, Ethan.””
The warning was subtle.
But it was there.
Ethan noticed.
“You’re scared of a dead man’s words?””
Richard stared at him.
“I’m warning you not to destroy your life over a misunderstanding.””
Ethan laughed softly.
“My life was destroyed thirty-one years ago.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could argue with that.
Daniel looked at the bottom of the letter.
“Mr. Hale…”
He paused.
Ethan looked at him.
“What?””
The lawyer hesitated.
“There is a name.””
Margaret stood suddenly.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the page.
“It says…”
Before he could finish, Vanessa grabbed the paper.
The movement was so fast that everyone froze.
“Vanessa.””
Ethan’s voice dropped.
She looked at the letter in her hands.
For a moment, she looked terrified.
Then she folded it.
“No.””
Ethan stared.
“No?””
She looked at him.
“You don’t want to know this.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried more fear than anything she had said before.
Ethan slowly approached her.
“Give me the letter.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Ethan.””
“Give me the letter.””
“Please.””
That word again.
The word he hated now.
Ethan stopped.
His expression changed.
“You spent my entire life making decisions for me.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Vanessa flinched.
And I knew he had hit the truth.
She handed the letter back.
Ethan unfolded it.
This time, he read the final lines carefully.
His breathing changed.
I watched his eyes move.
Then stop.
“What?””
I whispered.
He looked at me.
The fear on his face made my stomach drop.
“It’s my father’s handwriting.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What did he write?””
Ethan swallowed.
“He wrote…”
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at Richard.
Then at Margaret.
“He wrote that the person who took me was not a stranger.””
The room became silent.
“He wrote that it was someone inside the Hale family.””
Richard stepped forward.
“That proves nothing.””
Ethan ignored him.
“He wrote one name.””
Margaret’s hand covered her heart.
“Who?””
Ethan looked down.
His lips parted.
But he didn’t say it.
He couldn’t.
So Daniel took the paper from him.
The lawyer read the name.
Then looked up.
And his face changed.
Because he recognized it.
“No.””
Margaret looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel slowly lowered the letter.
“The person David accused…”
He looked toward Vanessa.
“…was you.””
Nobody moved.
The words hung in the air.
Vanessa stared at him.
“Me?””
Her voice sounded almost offended.
Then shocked.
Then broken.
“No.””
Ethan looked at his mother.
His entire face had gone numb.
“Dad accused you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He was wrong.””
“Were you?””
The question destroyed her.
She looked at Ethan.
And for the first time, she looked less like a powerful woman and more like someone trapped.
“I didn’t take you.””
Ethan stared.
“Then why would he write your name?””
Vanessa had no answer.
Richard suddenly laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone turned toward him.
“You finally understand.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“Your father was never as innocent as everyone believed.””
Margaret looked disgusted.
“Don’t you dare.””
Richard ignored her.
“David was emotional. Reckless. He thought exposing the truth would save everyone.””
“What truth?”” Ethan demanded.
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Ask your mother.””
Ethan turned.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Ethan…”
“What happened?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her face collapsed.
“I made a mistake.””
The room became colder.
“What kind of mistake?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“One that I spent thirty-one years trying to fix.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“You knew my son was alive.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Yes.””
The admission was devastating.
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“But why?””
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“Because when I found out what Richard had done…”
Richard’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“I was too late.””
Ethan stared.
“What did he do?””
Vanessa looked toward the old family portraits hanging on the wall.
Then back at her son.
“Your father discovered that someone inside the Hale family was planning to take control of everything.””
Daniel frowned.
“Control what?””
“The company.””
The answer was simple.
But it explained everything.
Money.
Power.
A legacy.
Vanessa continued.
“David found financial records showing someone was stealing from the family business.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“And you believed him?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
The room froze.
Richard smiled slightly.
“So that’s what this is.””
He shook his head.
“After all these years, you’re finally choosing sides.””
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
For the first time, Richard looked angry.
Not irritated.
Not annoyed.
Angry.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Ethan noticed.
“Why?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because if you keep digging, you won’t just destroy this family.””
He stepped closer.
“You’ll destroy the person you love most.””
My heart stopped.
Everyone looked at me.
Ethan turned instantly.
“What does that mean?””
Richard smiled.
And that smile terrified me.
“Your father didn’t only leave behind a letter.””
He reached into his pocket.
This time, he pulled out a small photograph.
He placed it on the table.
Ethan picked it up.
I saw his face change.
“What is this?””
Richard looked at me.
And I knew.
Before anyone spoke.
I knew whatever was in that photograph involved me.
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“Ask your wife why your father was watching her family thirty years ago.””
The room went completely still.
Ethan looked at the photograph.
May you like
Then at me.
And the person I loved most suddenly looked at me like I was a stranger.
