Chapter 5: The Letter Rachel Never Sent
Lily held the envelope against her chest as though someone might take it away.
Marcus sat motionless across from Daniel Mercer.
“My brother?”” he finally asked.
Daniel nodded.
“Rachel's initial concern involved a series of withdrawals from an account established for Lily. She believed Richard had information about those transactions.””
“Richard had no access to Lily's money,” Marcus said.
“Not directly, according to the documents I reviewed. But he was involved in the management of an investment company that handled some of the underlying assets.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Why didn't Rachel tell me?””
“Perhaps she intended to. I cannot speak for her. Her correspondence suggests she was trying to establish the facts before involving you.””
“She could have called me.””
“You were deployed, Marcus. And Rachel's letters indicate she was concerned about the effect an accusation might have on your relationship with your family.””
Marcus looked away.
I knew that expression. He was remembering every conversation he'd had with his brother, every time Richard had offered to help, every reassuring message about how well Vanessa was adjusting to family life.
Claire carefully gathered the documents into separate piles.
“Mr. Mercer, I need to review these in detail. We should distinguish between what the records establish and what remains speculation.””
“Of course.””
She pointed to the letter bearing Rachel's handwriting.
“May I examine the original?””
Daniel nodded.
“Provided it remains in my custody until we've arranged a proper chain of documentation.””
Lily tugged on my sleeve.
“Can I read my letter now?””
I looked at Marcus.
He nodded slowly.
“Go ahead, sweetheart.””
Lily opened the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was a folded sheet of cream-colored paper, a small photograph, and a pressed white flower that had turned pale and brittle with age.
She picked up the photograph first.
Rachel sat on a park bench, holding Lily as a baby. Her face was turned toward the camera, and her smile was so familiar that I felt as though she had just walked into the room.
Lily touched the photograph.
“I don't remember this.””
“You were very little,” Marcus said.
“Was Mommy happy?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She was happy whenever she held you.””
Lily unfolded the letter.
The handwriting was neat at the top and shakier near the bottom.
She could read most of the words, but some were too difficult. I sat beside her and helped.
My darling Lily,
If you're reading this, you are old enough to understand that grown-ups sometimes make mistakes. Sometimes they hide things because they're afraid. Sometimes they tell themselves that protecting someone means making decisions without asking what that person wants.
I want you to remember one thing above everything else.
You are not a burden.
Lily stopped.
Her eyes filled with tears.
I put my arm around her shoulders.
“Keep going if you want to.””
She nodded and continued.
You never have to earn love by being quiet, by being perfect, or by pretending not to be hurt. The people who love you should make room for your questions, even when the answers are difficult.
Your father loves you more than you can understand right now. If I am not there to tell you that myself, I need you to believe it.
Lily pressed the letter to her lips.
Marcus turned his face toward the window.
I watched his shoulders rise and fall as he struggled to control his breathing.
The next paragraph was written more firmly.
There is something else I want you to know. I have set aside money for your education and your future. That money is yours. It is not payment for being good, and it is not a prize that anyone can take away because they are angry with you.
If someone tells you that you must give it up to keep your family together, please speak to your father or to a person you trust.
Love should never require you to surrender what is rightfully yours.
Lily lowered the page.
“Mommy knew someone might take my money?””
Daniel answered gently.
“Your mother was worried about the way the account was being managed. She wanted to make sure your future was protected.””
“Did someone take it?””
“We don't know the full answer yet.””
Lily looked at Marcus.
“Daddy, I don't care about the money.””
He crossed the room and knelt beside her chair.
“I know, sweetheart.””
“I just want everyone to stop being mad.””
Marcus held her hand.
“That's not your job. You don't have to fix the adults.””
She leaned into him.
For a few moments, nobody spoke.
Then Claire found a paragraph in Rachel's accompanying correspondence and read it aloud.
“Rachel wrote that she had learned of an attempt to designate an alternative administrator for the trust without the necessary approvals. She suspected the change had been made to conceal earlier transactions.””
Daniel nodded.
“That is why she asked me to preserve the original instructions. She wanted the account reviewed independently.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Did you ever tell Richard you were investigating him?””
“No. I had no reason to believe he knew about my involvement.””
“Then how did he end up witnessing a document related to Lily?””
“I cannot answer that.””
Claire placed her pen on the table.
“We need the original filing, the complete account history, and the records showing who requested the changes. Until then, we should not assume Richard stole anything.””
Marcus stared at the photograph of Rachel.
“I don't need to assume. I need to know.””
Daniel reached into the envelope again.
“There is another document. Rachel asked me not to release it unless there was evidence of an attempt to interfere with Lily's guardianship or her inheritance.””
He removed a sealed packet and placed it in front of Claire.
The outer envelope carried a date and a handwritten note.
To be opened only if someone attempts to change Lily's legal or financial arrangements without proper authorization.
Claire examined the seal.
“It appears intact.””
Daniel nodded.
“Rachel signed across the flap in my presence.””
Claire photographed the envelope, documented its condition, and then carefully opened it.
Inside was a list of account numbers, a timeline of transactions, and a letter addressed to Daniel.
She read the first page in silence.
Then she looked up.
“Mr. Mercer, do you know whether Richard had authority to approve transactions for Bennett Family Holdings?””
“He was a director for a period of time. His authority was limited.””
“What about Vanessa?””
Daniel frowned.
“She wasn't an employee of the company.””
Claire turned a page.
“Then why does Rachel's letter identify a company associated with Vanessa as the recipient of one of the transfers?””
Marcus stood.
“What?””
Claire pointed to a line on the statement.
The amount was substantial enough to make my stomach tighten.
The transfer had been recorded as a consulting payment. The recipient was a small company registered under Vanessa's maiden name.
“When was this?”” Marcus asked.
“Approximately four months before Rachel died,” Claire replied.
Marcus shook his head.
“Vanessa didn't know Richard then. At least, she told me she didn't.””
Daniel's expression became grave.
“Rachel's correspondence suggests otherwise. She wrote that she had seen the two of them together at a meeting connected to the investment company.””
I thought of the day Vanessa had first met Marcus.
She had been charming, attentive, and almost unnervingly interested in our family. She'd asked about Lily's school, Marcus's deployment schedule, and whether he had made arrangements for his finances while overseas.
At the time, I'd interpreted her questions as signs that she wanted to be involved.
Now I wondered what else she had been trying to learn.
Marcus took out his phone.
“I want to call Richard.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not yet. If he is involved, an unplanned confrontation could compromise evidence or prompt someone to destroy records.””
“So we sit here?””
“No. We preserve what we have, request the relevant financial records through the appropriate process, and document every contact. If there is evidence of fraud, we'll discuss reporting it to the proper authorities.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Fine.””
Daniel closed the remaining folders.
“There is one more thing Rachel asked me to tell you, Marcus. She wrote it in a separate note because she thought you might dismiss it as grief or suspicion.””
“What did she say?””
Daniel glanced at Lily, who was carefully folding her letter.
“She believed someone in your family was using your military absences to create a legal record that made you appear unable to care for your daughter.””
Marcus went pale.
“Why?””
“Rachel didn't know for certain. She suspected it would make it easier for someone else to gain control over Lily's financial arrangements.””
I felt the room tilt around me.
The cruel treatment at home. The forged signature. The attempt to collect Lily from school.
Perhaps these weren't separate acts of spite.
Perhaps someone had been building a case against Marcus while he was away.
Claire placed the documents into her briefcase.
“We have enough reason to investigate. We don't yet have enough to establish the entire scheme.””
Lily folded her mother's letter and put it back in its envelope.
“Can we go home now?””
Marcus immediately reached for her backpack.
“Yes.””
She slipped her hand into his.
As we reached the office door, Daniel called after us.
“Marcus?””
He turned.
“There is a final entry in Rachel's records. A transfer was attempted three weeks ago, after the date of the guardianship filing.””
“Was it successful?””
Daniel shook his head.
“The bank placed a temporary hold because the authorization didn't match the original instructions.””
“Who attempted it?””
Daniel looked down at the statement.
“Vanessa.””
Outside, the afternoon rain had begun to fall.
Marcus stood beneath the awning with Lily beside him, the letter tucked safely inside her backpack.
He looked at me.
“I brought Vanessa into our home because I thought she wanted to build a family.””
I took his hand.
“We'll find out what she wanted.””
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa appeared on the screen.
We need to talk. Alone. If you let Claire turn this into a legal battle, you'll never learn what really happened to Rachel.
Marcus read it twice.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
And before you accuse me of anything, ask your brother who was with Rachel the night she died.
