Chapter 7: The Woman Vanessa Tried to Replace
Vanessa stood at the top of our staircase holding a black notebook against her chest.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Marcus lowered his phone.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa glanced toward Lily’s bedroom.
“Not here.””
“You chose to come into my house unannounced. You chose to involve my daughter in a scheme involving forged documents. And now you want to decide where we have this conversation?””
Her fingers tightened around the notebook.
“I came back because I know what Richard is going to tell you, and I need you to hear my side before you make another mistake.””
Marcus took one step toward her.
“Did you forge my signature?””
“No.””
“Did you ask Richard to collect Lily from school?””
“Yes, but I never intended for him to take her without your knowledge.””
“You sent him with paperwork claiming he had authority to collect her.””
“I thought the arrangement had been approved.””
“By whom?””
Vanessa opened her mouth, then looked away.
Marcus laughed once, without humor.
“That’s what I thought.””
I moved closer to him.
“Vanessa, what did Rachel discover about you?””
She looked at me, and for the first time since I'd known her, her composure completely collapsed.
“You think I wanted any of this?”” she whispered.
“You think I wanted to spend three years living in a house where every photograph on the walls reminded me that I would always come second?””
I stared at her.
“Lily is eight years old. She is not your competition.””
“That's easy for you to say.””
“Then explain what you mean.””
Vanessa walked down the stairs slowly. Her heels clicked against each step.
“When Marcus and I first met, he told me everything about Rachel. How she was the love of his life. How he'd never expected to love anyone again. How he wanted someone who would understand that Lily would always come first.””
Marcus's expression didn't change.
“I told you the same thing before we got married.””
“Yes. And I agreed because I thought I could handle it.””
She placed the notebook on the coffee table.
“Then I moved into this house, and every day was another reminder that I wasn't really part of the family. Lily cried for her mother. Marcus felt guilty whenever he disciplined her.
Maya kept trying to make everything perfect. And I was expected to be grateful for whatever space remained.””
I shook my head.
“No one asked you to compete with a dead woman.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You don't understand what it feels like to be the outsider in your own home.””
“I understand what it feels like to watch an eight-year-old apologize for existing.””
That silenced her.
Marcus picked up the notebook.
“What is this?””
“Records.””
“What records?””
“Payments. Dates. Names. Everything I kept because I knew Richard would eventually try to make me take the blame for all of it.””
Marcus opened the cover.
The first pages contained handwritten dates and amounts, followed by initials and short notes. Several entries referred to the same investment company Daniel had identified in Rachel's records.
One entry had been circled three times.
R.B. — original authorization unavailable.
Another read:
J.B. — replacement documentation required before transfer.
Marcus looked up.
“Who is J.B.?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your brother.””
“And R.B.?””
“Rachel Bennett.””
I felt the room grow colder.
“What exactly did you do with Rachel's account?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa sat down.
“Richard approached me before I married you. He told me that your family had complicated financial arrangements and that he was trying to protect Lily's future. He offered me a consulting position through a company I had recently registered.””
“Why would he offer you that?””
“He said he needed someone outside the family who could handle administrative work without attracting attention.””
Marcus turned another page.
“How much did he pay you?””
“Initially, nothing. Later, he transferred money into the company account.””
“Money from Lily's trust?””
Vanessa covered her mouth briefly.
“I didn't know where it came from at first.””
“And when you found out?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus slammed the notebook shut.
“You knew.””
“I suspected!””
“You knew enough to keep records.””
“I kept records because I was afraid of him!””
Her voice rose sharply, then fell when she remembered Lily was upstairs.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Richard told me the money was being moved temporarily. He said the trust was underperforming and that he had permission to restructure it. He showed me documents with your signature.””
“My signature was forged.””
“I know that now.””
“Now?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I began questioning the transactions before Rachel died. She contacted me after she found my company name in the records. She asked me to meet her.””
Marcus went completely still.
“You met Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The evening before she died.””
For a moment, the only sound was the ticking clock in the hallway.
I felt my hands go cold.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“Rachel knew about the transfers. She told me she had copies of the original records and intended to take them to Daniel the next morning. She said she would expose Richard.””
“Did you threaten her?””
“No.””
“Did you touch her?””
“No!””
Her answer came so quickly that it sounded rehearsed.
Marcus studied her.
“Then why did you tell me nothing?””
“Because Richard told me that if I spoke, he would make sure I was blamed for the entire scheme. My company received the money. My name was on the paperwork. He said he had enough evidence to prove I was responsible.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was frightened.””
“So you married me instead.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I loved you.””
“You married me while concealing evidence involving my daughter's inheritance.””
“I thought I could fix it. I thought if I stayed close to you, I could eventually repay the money and make the problem disappear.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And then you decided Lily was the problem.””
Vanessa's expression hardened again.
“Richard told me that if Lily's living arrangements changed, the financial arrangements could be reviewed. He said you were away too often to provide stable care, and that an independent administrator might be appointed.””
“So you helped create a case against my daughter.””
“I thought it would be temporary.””
“You made her wash dishes while other children celebrated a birthday.””
“That had nothing to do with the money!””
“Then why did you do it?””
Vanessa looked down.
She had no answer.
Marcus turned toward the staircase.
“Lily is not a tool you can use to repair your mistakes.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I know.””
“No, you don't. If you understood that, you would have protected her instead of threatening her.””
She wiped her face and stood.
“There's something else you need to know.””
Marcus didn't look at her.
“I'm listening.””
“Richard wasn't the only person who wanted the trust changed. Someone else contacted him after Rachel died.””
“Who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she opened the notebook to the final page.
A name had been written there in block capitals.
*DANIEL MERCER.*
Marcus stared at it.
“You just told us Daniel was protecting Rachel's documents.””
“I told you what I believed.””
“Are you accusing her lawyer of helping Richard?””
“I'm saying Richard made a payment to Daniel's office after Rachel died.””
Marcus snatched up the notebook.
“Why didn't you tell us this before?””
“Because I didn't know whether the payment was legitimate. Richard said it was for legal services.””
Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a small flash drive.
“I copied the financial records before he could destroy them. I haven't opened every file, but there's an invoice with Daniel's name and a payment date three days after Rachel's death.””
Marcus took the drive without touching her hand.
“Why give this to us now?””
“Because Richard called me this morning. He said you were asking questions, and he told me to leave town.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
“Because I was involved. Because I was afraid. Because I kept thinking I could undo everything before anyone discovered what I'd done.””
Her gaze shifted toward Lily's bedroom.
“I never wanted her to get hurt.””
Marcus's voice was quiet.
“But you hurt her anyway.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
For once, she didn't argue.
Claire arrived twenty minutes later. She photographed the notebook, took custody of the flash drive under documented procedures, and instructed Vanessa not to alter or destroy any records.
“We'll need to verify every transaction,” Claire said.
“And if these records show possible financial crimes or forged documents, we may need to provide them to the appropriate authorities.””
Vanessa nodded.
Then she turned to Marcus.
“I know you can't forgive me.””
“Forgiveness isn't the question right now.””
“What is?””
“Whether my daughter is safe.””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“I understand.””
“No,” Marcus replied.
“You understand that you're in trouble. That's not the same thing.””
She left without another word.
After the door closed, Claire placed the notebook inside a protective folder.
“We have a clearer picture, but we also have a new problem. If Daniel received money from Richard, we need to know why.””
Marcus looked at the flash drive.
“And if he helped them?””
“Then the evidence will tell us.””
That night, Marcus sat beside Lily's bed until she fell asleep.
I found him there an hour later, holding the photograph of Rachel.
“Do you think Vanessa told the truth?”” I whispered.
“About some of it, probably.””
“And the rest?””
He looked at the photograph.
“That's what frightens me.””
His phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
Vanessa has given you the notebook. Good. Now ask her what she did with Rachel's final voicemail.
Marcus sat upright.
Before he could respond, a second message arrived.
May you like
Because the last person Rachel called that night was not Richard.
It was Vanessa.
