Chapter 5: The Night I Lost My Memory
I stared at the picture on my phone until the screen went dark.
Danielle.
Alive.
Standing outside a cheap roadside motel.
Ten years of anger.
Ten years of questions.
Ten years of believing she left because she stopped loving me.
And now she was somewhere out there.
But the message wasn’t the thing that scared me.
The message was the last sentence.
*Because she knows what you did.*
I looked at Marcus.
“What happened that night?””
He didn’t answer.
The truck engine hummed beneath us as we drove through empty roads. The city lights were far behind us now. The only thing ahead was darkness.
Lily sat quietly in the back seat, holding the Rottweiler’s head against her shoulder.
She was exhausted.
Terrified.
But she was watching us.
Kids always knew when adults were hiding something.
Marcus looked out the window.
“Cole…”
“No.””
My voice was sharp.
“No more protecting me.””
He turned.
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
I held up my phone.
“Someone out there thinks I’m the reason Danielle disappeared.””
Marcus said nothing.
“And you look like you know why.””
His jaw tightened.
“I know part of it.””
“Then start talking.””
The silence lasted too long.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“Ten years ago, there was a night you don’t remember.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A night after you and Danielle fought.””
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
“I remember the fight.””
I remembered it perfectly.
Danielle standing in my garage.
Tears in her eyes.
Telling me I was ignoring the truth.
Telling me someone close to me was dangerous.
I remembered shouting.
I remembered saying things I regretted.
Then I remembered leaving.
After that…
Nothing.
Marcus continued.
“You came back to the clubhouse.””
“I always came back.””
“Not that night.””
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“You came back injured.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s not.””
“What happened?””
Marcus stared at the road.
“You were bleeding.””
The words felt unreal.
“From what?””
“A gunshot.””
My hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“A gunshot?””
“Yes.””
I searched my own memories.
There was nothing.
No pain.
No hospital.
No bullet.
Nothing.
“How could I forget getting shot?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because someone wanted you to.””
The truck suddenly felt smaller.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
That was becoming a pattern.
I pulled over.
The tires stopped on the empty road.
Nobody spoke.
I turned around.
“Everybody out.””
Marcus blinked.
“What?””
“I said get out.””
“Cole—”
“Now.””
Marcus understood.
He opened the door.
Ray followed.
Lily stayed inside.
I looked at her.
“You stay with the dog.””
She nodded.
The Rottweiler watched me carefully.
Almost like it understood.
Marcus and Ray stood in front of the truck.
The night air was cold.
I looked at the two men.
The two people connected to the biggest mystery of my life.
“Tell me what happened.””
Ray crossed his arms.
“You really don’t remember?””
I looked at him.
“You know something too?””
He smiled.
“Of course I do.””
Marcus looked angry.
“Ray.””
“What?””
Ray laughed.
“He deserves the truth.””
I stepped toward him.
“Then give it to me.””
Ray’s expression changed.
For once, there was no arrogance.
Only bitterness.
“Ten years ago, Danielle discovered someone was stealing money through the club.””
Marcus nodded.
“She found the records.””
Ray continued.
“She came to me first.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because she thought I could help.””
“And did you?””
Ray looked away.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“What did you do?””
“I made a mistake.””
Marcus interrupted.
“You threatened her.””
Ray’s eyes snapped toward him.
“I told her to stop digging.””
“You scared her.””
“I was trying to keep her alive.””
Nobody spoke.
I studied him.
For years, I thought Ray was just a man who got greedy.
But this sounded different.
“What happened after?””
Ray looked at me.
“You found out.””
My stomach dropped.
“I found out?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Danielle told you.””
I remembered the fight.
Her shaking hands.
Her desperate voice.
“Cole, please listen to me. I’m not accusing everyone. I’m telling you someone is lying.””
I remembered ignoring her.
I remembered being angry.
“You didn’t believe her,” Ray said.
The words hit.
Because they were true.
“You thought she was trying to destroy your club.””
I closed my eyes.
A painful memory surfaced.
Danielle crying.
Me telling her:
“You don’t understand what these men mean to me.””
Her answer.
“I understand perfectly. That’s why I’m scared.””
I opened my eyes.
“What happened after I left?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“You followed her.””
I froze.
“I did?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“The old warehouse.””
The words triggered something.
A flash.
A dark building.
Danielle running.
Someone shouting.
A gunshot.
My own hands covered in blood.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus grabbed my shoulder.
“Cole.””
“No.””
I touched my head.
Images came faster.
Danielle on the floor.
Someone standing behind me.
A weapon.
A voice.
A voice saying my name.
“You didn’t do this.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Who was there?””
His expression changed.
“You really don’t remember.””
“Who was there?””
Marcus looked at Ray.
Then back at me.
“Your father.””
Everything stopped.
My father had been dead for fifteen years.
But the words still hit like a punch.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I stepped away.
“No.””
Ray spoke quietly.
“Your father wasn’t who you thought he was.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“You need to know.””
“My father built this club.””
Ray’s voice hardened.
“And he built the secrets too.””
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I expect you to remember.””
The silence broke when my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
No greeting.
No hesitation.
“Who are you?””
A woman’s voice responded.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew it.
Even after ten years.
Even after trying to erase it.
Danielle.
“Cole…”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Danielle?””
A shaky breath.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The world disappeared.
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I don’t have much time.””
My grip tightened.
“Lily is safe.””
A broken sound escaped her.
“My baby.””
The emotion in her voice almost destroyed me.
“She’s with me.””
“Good.””
“Danielle, what happened?””
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I waited.
“Do not trust Marcus.””
I looked at him.
He stared back.
Confusion.
Pain.
Fear.
“Danielle, he helped you.””
“He helped me survive.””
Her voice lowered.
“But he’s still hiding the worst part.””
My heart raced.
“What worst part?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“The night you lost your memory…”
The call crackled.
“Cole, you weren’t attacked.””
I held my breath.
“You were protecting someone.””
The line went silent.
“Danielle?””
Nothing.
“Danielle!””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Marcus looked at me.
“What did she say?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew something had changed.
For ten years, I thought I was searching for the person who hurt Danielle.
But maybe the truth was worse.
Maybe I was searching for the person I became that night.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, it wasn’t a threat.
It was a photo.
A photograph taken ten years ago.
Me.
Danielle.
And a baby.
May you like
On the back was handwritten one sentence.
*“Lily was not the first child Cole Maddox lost.””*
