Chapter 9: The Friend Who Stole the Truth
The call ended.
But Lily’s voice stayed.
“Daddy?””
One word.
Seven letters.
Enough to destroy me.
I stood in the cemetery holding my phone, unable to move.
Marcus.
The man who had saved me.
The man who had betrayed me.
The man who had been beside me through every loss.
He had Lily.
Danielle reached for my arm.
“Cole.””
I pulled away.
Not because I was angry at her.
Because I didn’t know who I was allowed to trust anymore.
My father stepped closer.
“Where did he take her?””
I looked at him.
“You know?””
His expression hardened.
“I know Marcus.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
A long silence.
Then my father said:
“He has a safe house.””
Danielle looked at him.
“You knew?””
My father didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I laughed quietly.
Everyone had information.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had a reason.
And somehow, I was always the last person to know my own life.
“Take me there.””
My father nodded.
“No.””
The word surprised me.
“No?””
“You’re too emotional.””
I stared at him.
“My daughter is with a man who lied to me for ten years, and you’re telling me I’m too emotional?””
“I’m telling you Marcus wants you angry.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to lecture me about control.””
The words hit him.
Because he knew they were true.
For years, he had controlled everything.
My life.
My club.
My choices.
But this time, I wasn’t asking.
I was going.
Danielle stepped between us.
“Cole is right.””
My father looked at her.
“Danielle.””
“No.””
Her voice was stronger than I had ever heard it.
“You don’t get to hide the truth anymore.””
The two of them stared at each other.
A history existed between them.
One I never understood.
One built from secrets and survival.
Danielle looked at me.
“Marcus took Lily because he knows where Maya is.””
My heart stopped.
“Maya?””
She nodded.
“He always knew.””
The name alone hurt.
Another child.
Another piece of my life stolen away.
“What does Marcus want?””
Danielle answered quietly.
“Control.””
My father looked toward the road.
“He always did.””
I climbed into the truck.
This time nobody stopped me.
The drive was silent.
My father sat in the passenger seat.
Danielle sat behind me.
Nobody spoke.
Because there were no more excuses left.
Only consequences.
After thirty minutes, we reached an abandoned factory on the edge of town.
My father looked at the building.
“This isn’t his safe house.””
I turned.
“What?””
“He changed locations.””
Danielle’s face changed.
“How do you know?””
My father looked uncomfortable.
“Because I was the one who taught him how to disappear.””
That sentence told me everything.
Marcus wasn’t just a loyal friend.
He was trained by my father.
Built by my father.
Another weapon I never knew I was holding.
We entered the factory.
The doors were unlocked.
Too easy.
I raised my hand.
Everyone stopped.
The silence was wrong.
A trap.
I moved forward slowly.
Inside, old machines covered the floor.
Dust.
Rust.
Dark corners.
Then a voice echoed.
“Still walking into places without checking exits.””
I froze.
Marcus stepped out.
Lily stood beside him.
Alive.
Safe.
But terrified.
My entire body relaxed for one second.
Then anger replaced it.
“Let her go.””
Marcus looked at me.
The sadness in his eyes almost made it worse.
“I knew you’d come.””
“You took my daughter.””
“I protected your daughter.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“You kidnapped her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.””
“I’m done hearing that.””
His face tightened.
“You think I wanted any of this?””
I laughed.
“You had ten years to tell me the truth.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
The honesty stopped me.
Marcus looked at Lily.
“She’s alive because I lied.””
I stared.
“What are you talking about?””
He took a breath.
“The people hunting your family wanted all of your children dead.””
My chest tightened.
“Maya.””
His expression changed.
“She was the first target.””
Danielle stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know.””
Her face went pale.
“What?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Maya was never taken.””
Silence.
“What?””
“She was hidden.””
“By who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Me.””
The word came from behind me.
Everyone turned.
A young woman stood in the doorway.
Older than the child in the photograph.
But I recognized her immediately.
The eyes.
The expression.
The impossible familiarity.
My breath disappeared.
“Maya.””
She looked at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“Hi, Dad.””
For a moment, the entire world stopped.
I couldn’t speak.
I couldn’t move.
My daughter.
Alive.
Standing in front of me.
A person I had spent years mourning without knowing she was breathing.
I took one step forward.
She stepped back.
That hurt more than anything.
“Maya…”
She looked away.
“I know you don’t remember me.””
The words cut.
“I should.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A tear fell.
“You were protecting me.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked exhausted.
“You told me if anyone came looking, I was supposed to disappear.””
My voice broke.
“I told you that?””
Maya nodded.
“You were scared.””
A memory surfaced.
A little girl.
A blanket.
My voice whispering:
“Be brave, baby girl.””
I grabbed my chest.
Maya watched me.
“I hated you.””
The honesty hurt.
“I hated that you weren’t there.””
I looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
She wiped her face.
“But Mom told me the truth.””
I looked at Danielle.
“She told you?””
Maya nodded.
“Not everything.””
She looked at Marcus.
“He told me the rest.””
I turned.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because someone had to.””
“Why now?””
He looked toward Lily.
“Because they found Lily.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Marcus’s expression became serious.
“The same people who killed Eli.””
Nobody moved.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Marcus took a deep breath.
Then he said the name I never expected.
“Your mother.””
The words made no sense.
“My mother?””
Marcus nodded.
“She wasn’t innocent.””
My father closed his eyes.
Danielle looked devastated.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t just about a club.
Not about money.
Not about revenge.
This was a family war.
One that started before I was even born.
Marcus continued:
“Your mother discovered what your father built.””
I looked at my father.
“She tried to destroy it.””
“Yes.””
“And Eli?””
Marcus looked away.
“She knew about Eli.””
My stomach turned.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She killed my son?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
A sound came from outside.
Engines.
Multiple vehicles.
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked toward the door.
“They’re here.””
My father grabbed his weapon.
Danielle pulled Maya closer.
I moved toward Lily.
The doors burst open.
Men flooded inside.
But they weren’t strangers.
They were wearing leather vests.
Maddox Riders patches.
My club.
My family.
The men I had trusted.
At the front stood someone I thought was dead.
My mother.
Older.
Calm.
Alive.
She looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Hello, Cole.””
I stared at her.
The woman I buried years ago.
The woman who had created this nightmare.
She lifted her eyes toward Lily.
Then Maya.
Then Danielle.
“You finally found all your daughters.””
A cold silence filled the factory.
May you like
Then she said:
“Now I can finally take them back.””
