Chapter 4: The Call He Couldn't Control

The phone kept ringing.

Its vibration rattled against the officer's palm, loud enough to cut through the silence in Claire's bedroom. On the bright screen, one name appeared again and again.

*DAD.*

Eric stared at it as if the phone had become a weapon.

“It's not what you think,” he said.

Officer Marcus Reed glanced at the screen, then at Eric's hand, which remained suspended beside his coat pocket.

“Then explain it, Mr. Morgan.””

Eric straightened his shirt.

“Claire has been having a difficult pregnancy. She's forgetful. I took the phone because she kept getting upset over calls from her father.””

“Thirty-seven missed calls?”” Reed asked.

“She exaggerates everything.””

Claire flinched at the familiar accusation.

Her father noticed. He moved closer to the bed, placing himself where she could see him without having to look at Eric.

“Claire,” Reed said, turning toward her, “is this your phone?””

“Yes.””

“Did you give it to your husband?””

“No.””

Eric released a sharp breath.

“Claire, don't do this.””

Reed raised his hand.

“Sir, don't interrupt her.””

Eric's jaw tightened. He reached for the phone, but Reed immediately stepped away.

“Keep your hands visible.””

“I wasn't trying to take it.””

“Then don't reach for it.””

The medical responder, a Black woman named Denise Carter, knelt beside the bed and introduced herself to Claire. She asked whether Claire was experiencing pain, dizziness, contractions, or any change in the baby's movement.

Claire answered quietly, rubbing her palm over the front of her maternity dress.

“I've been having cramps since last night,” she admitted.

“But they stopped for a while.””

Denise's expression became more serious.

“How long ago did they start?””

“Last night. After we argued.””

Eric shook his head.

“She gets cramps whenever she's stressed. Her doctor said that was normal.””

Denise didn't look at him.

“I'm asking Claire.””

Claire swallowed.

“They come and go. Sometimes my stomach gets tight.””

“Thank you for telling me,” Denise said.

“We're going to have you evaluated at the hospital.””

Eric stepped forward.

“I'm coming with her.””

Claire's fingers locked around her father's sleeve.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

Eric stopped.

“What do you mean, no?””

“I don't want you in the ambulance.””

He stared at her as though she'd slapped him.

“Claire, I'm your husband.””

“I know.””

“I'm the father of your baby.””

“I know that, too.””

“Then stop acting like I'm a stranger!””

Claire's breathing quickened. Robert placed a steady hand on the mattress beside her.

“Eric,” he said, “she has answered you.””

Reed moved between the couple.

“Mr. Morgan, your wife has requested space. You'll respect that while we assess the situation.””

Eric looked at the officer with open disbelief.

“So I just stand here while you let her father turn her against me?””

“No one is turning her against you,” Reed replied.

“We're responding to a report involving a pregnant woman with visible injuries.””

Eric pointed toward Robert.

“He's been waiting for an excuse to destroy my marriage!””

Robert didn't react.

Instead, he crouched beside Claire so she wouldn't have to raise her voice.

“Sweetheart, do you want me to go with you?””

She nodded quickly.

“Yes. Please.””

“Then I'll go.””

Eric laughed, but the sound came out brittle.

“Of course. Of course you will. You're going to sit beside her and tell her what to say, just like you've always done.””

Robert slowly stood.

“You've spent this entire morning answering questions that were asked of your wife. You don't get to accuse me of silencing her.””

Eric's mouth opened.

Robert continued.

“You have called her unstable, forgetful, emotional, and confused. Every time she has tried to speak, you've interrupted her. Every time she's looked frightened, you've blamed her for being frightened.””

He glanced at the bruises on Claire's arms.

“And you still haven't explained those.””

Eric's face reddened.

“I didn't do those!””

“Then let the facts speak for themselves.””

Reed nodded toward the hallway.

“Mr. Morgan, I'd like to speak with you separately. For now, stay here and follow my instructions.””

Eric looked at the officer, then at Daniel Price, the attorney he'd summoned earlier.

“You're my lawyer. Tell them they can't do this.””

Daniel adjusted his grip on his leather folder.

“Eric, I'm not here to prevent a medical assessment. You need to cooperate.””

“Cooperate?”” Eric repeated.

“Are you serious?””

“I am.””

For the first time, Eric appeared to realize that his attorney wasn't going to rescue him from the conversation.

Denise helped Claire sit upright. Robert brought her slippers from beneath the bed, then carefully helped her put them on without disturbing her balance.

Claire watched his hands.

“I can't believe you came,” she whispered.

Robert looked up.

“Why wouldn't I?””

“Because I stopped answering you. I stopped visiting. I kept telling you everything was fine.””

He paused.

“You're my daughter, Claire. You don't have to earn the right to call me.””

Her face crumpled.

She reached for him, and he wrapped his arms around her carefully, mindful of her belly.

“I thought you'd be disappointed in me,” she whispered against his coat.

Robert closed his eyes.

“Never for being hurt. Never for being afraid.””

Behind them, Eric muttered something about manipulation.

Robert didn't turn around.

For once, Eric's voice did not control what happened next.

As Denise prepared Claire for transport, Reed asked whether there were any other immediate safety concerns.

Claire hesitated.

“There is something.””

Robert loosened his hold so he could see her face.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She glanced at Eric, who had gone very still.

Then she looked at Officer Reed.

“There's a locked cabinet in the hallway closet. Eric keeps my documents in there. My passport, my bank papers, my medical records.””

Eric's expression changed.

“That's none of your business.””

Reed looked at him.

“Are those documents Claire's?””

“They're household documents.””

“Can she access them?””

Eric didn't answer.

Claire wiped her cheeks.

“He changed the lock. He said I was too careless to keep important things.””

Denise exchanged a glance with Reed.

Robert felt his stomach tighten again.

The bruises had been the first thing he'd seen. The missing phone had been the first thing he'd understood.

But the documents suggested something larger: a deliberate effort to make Claire dependent on the very person she feared.

Reed took out his notebook.

“Where exactly is this cabinet?””

“In the hall closet,” Claire said.

“Behind the coats.””

Reed looked toward the hallway.

Then he turned back to Eric.

“Mr. Morgan, I need you to stay here while I establish what belongs to whom.””

Eric's eyes narrowed.

“You can't go through my house because of something she says.””

“We'll proceed according to the circumstances and applicable law.””

“That cabinet is private.””

“Then you should have no trouble explaining why your wife's personal documents are inside it.””

Eric's face had gone pale.

Claire noticed.

For the first time that morning, she didn't look away from him.

“Daddy,” she said quietly, “there's something else in that cabinet.””

Robert turned toward her.

“What else?””

Claire's voice dropped to a whisper.

“The papers he made me sign.””

Eric lunged one step toward the bed.

“Claire, shut your mouth!””

Reed immediately blocked his path.

“That's enough, sir.””

Claire grabbed her father's hand.

“He said if I ever tried to leave, I'd lose the baby, the house, and everything we owned.””

Robert felt the old discipline inside him tighten around a rising fury.

He looked at Eric.

“What papers?””

Eric's eyes darted toward the hallway closet.

Then, almost too quietly to hear, he said, “You have no idea what she signed.””

Robert looked back at his daughter.

Claire was crying again.

May you like

But this time, her fear had a name.

And whatever waited inside that locked cabinet, Eric was terrified of someone opening it.
