Chapter 6: A Plan Written in Ink
Nobody spoke after Officer Reed read the note.
Claire stared at him, her mouth slightly open, as if she had been waiting for the words to change into something less terrible.
Robert rose from his chair.
“Is that Eric's handwriting?””
“We're still establishing who wrote it,” Reed replied.
“I don't want to jump to conclusions.””
“But the note was in a folder with my name on it,” Claire said.
“Yes.””
“And it was dated before my appointment.””
“Yes.””
She looked toward her father.
“He was planning this.””
Robert knelt beside the bed.
“We don't know everything yet, sweetheart. But we know enough to take your safety seriously.””
Claire shook her head.
“I kept telling myself I was imagining things. When he took my phone, I thought he was angry. When he changed my passwords, I thought he was trying to help. When he told me not to see my friends, I thought he was worried about the baby.””
Her voice cracked.
“How many things do you have to explain away before you understand what's happening?””
Robert had no answer that could make the question hurt less.
He took her hand.
“You understand it now.””
She began to cry.
“I should have told you.””
“You told me when you could.””
“But you called so many times. I saw the notifications before he took the phone. I wanted to answer.””
Robert remembered the thirty-seven missed calls glowing on the screen. He remembered leaving messages that became increasingly worried, then trying to hide his concern so Claire wouldn't feel guilty for not responding.
He had assumed she needed space.
He had never imagined someone was standing between her and the phone.
“Why didn't you come to the house?”” she asked.
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I should have come sooner.””
Claire looked startled.
“Daddy, no.””
“I thought I was respecting your marriage. You told me you were busy. You said everything was fine, and I wanted to believe you.””
He paused.
“But I should have listened more carefully.””
Claire squeezed his hand.
“I didn't know how to tell you.””
“I know.””
A nurse entered to check the monitor, giving them a few moments to compose themselves. When she left, Robert pulled his chair closer again.
“From now on, we take this one step at a time. Medical care first. Safety first. The documents can be handled by people who know how to review them.””
Claire nodded.
“And Eric?””
“We don't have to decide everything about Eric today.””
She looked toward the door.
“What if he comes here?””
“Hospital staff can help keep the room secure. Officer Reed can explain what protections are available. You don't have to speak to Eric alone.””
Her shoulders relaxed slightly.
A few minutes later, Reed returned with another officer and asked Claire whether she felt safe returning home.
“No,” she answered.
The response came faster this time.
Reed nodded.
“Thank you for being clear. We'll document that. We'll also discuss safe arrangements for your discharge with the hospital team.””
Claire glanced at Robert.
“Can I stay with you?””
“Of course.””
“I don't want to be a burden.””
Robert looked at her as though she had said something impossible.
“You could fill every room in my house with baby furniture, cry through every meal, wake me up every hour of the night, and you'd still never be a burden.””
A small, broken laugh escaped her.
“You'd complain about the furniture.””
“Absolutely. I'd complain while assembling it incorrectly.””
For the first time since the morning began, Claire smiled.
It vanished quickly, but Robert saw it.
Then Reed's phone vibrated.
He read the screen and frowned.
“Eric has contacted us,” he said.
“He wants to know when Claire will be discharged.””
Claire's smile disappeared.
“What did you tell him?””
“That we're not sharing your medical information with him without appropriate authorization. We're also assessing the situation and documenting the concerns you've raised.””
Robert nodded.
“Good.””
Reed glanced toward Claire.
“He has also said that he wants to bring you some personal belongings.””
Claire shook her head immediately.
“I don't want anything from him.””
“That's your choice,” Reed said.
“If you need belongings from the house, we can discuss safer ways to retrieve them.””
Claire pressed a hand to her stomach.
“I want my prenatal vitamins. My clothes. The baby's blanket.””
“We can make a list,” Robert said.
“And my mother's necklace.””
He paused.
“The gold one?””
She nodded.
“It's in the little jewelry box in our bedroom. He gave it to me when we got married, but it was my mother's before that.””
Robert remembered the necklace. Claire's mother had worn it at birthdays, graduations, and the last family Christmas before cancer took her.
“I'll make sure we ask about it.””
Claire looked at him with sudden urgency.
“Don't let him keep it.””
“I won't ignore it, sweetheart. We'll handle it properly.””
When Reed left to make arrangements, Robert stepped into the corridor to call a trusted family attorney.
He explained only what was necessary: Claire's injuries, the missing phone, the documents found in the cabinet, and the handwritten note. He asked for guidance on protecting Claire's financial interests and ensuring that no one pressured her into signing anything further.
The attorney told him not to speculate about the documents before they were reviewed.
Robert agreed.
Then he made another call to arrange a safe place for Claire to stay once the medical team cleared her to leave.
When he returned to the room, Claire was looking at her phone—the one Reed had arranged to return to her after documenting its condition and contents.
It was still charging beside the bed.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“I want to hear your messages.””
Robert sat down.
“Are you sure?””
She nodded.
He opened the voicemail list, then handed her the phone so she could control it herself.
The first message was from two weeks earlier.
“Hey, sweetheart. Just checking in. Call me when you have a minute. Love you.””
The next was three days later.
“Claire, I haven't heard your voice in a while. I hope you're feeling okay. No pressure. Just let me know you're safe.””
Her eyes filled.
Another message played.
“It's Dad again. I know you're busy getting ready for the baby. I bought another ridiculous outfit, so you'll have to call me before I embarrass myself by putting the wrong size on the gift receipt.””
She gave a wet, startled laugh.
“That sounds like you.””
“It's because I'm consistent.””
She listened to another message.
Then another.
Some were ordinary. Some were worried. In one, Robert had asked whether she wanted him to attend her next prenatal appointment. In another, he'd told her about a restaurant he wanted to take her to after the baby arrived.
Each message carried a little piece of a life Eric had tried to shut out.
When the last one ended, Claire pressed the phone to her chest.
“I thought you had stopped calling.””
Robert frowned.
“What?””
“He told me you were tired of trying. He said you knew I didn't want to talk to you anymore.””
Robert felt the words land like a physical blow.
“Claire, I never stopped wanting to hear from you.””
She began to sob.
He wrapped his arms around her carefully while she cried against his shoulder.
“I believed him,” she whispered.
“I know.””
“I believed him when he said everyone would leave.””
Robert held her until her breathing steadied.
“You are not alone. Not now.””
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Reed stepped inside with a sealed evidence envelope and a concerned expression.
“I'm sorry to interrupt. There's been an update regarding the documents.””
Claire sat upright.
“Did you find out what they are?””
“Some appear to concern financial arrangements. Others may relate to property. They'll need professional review before anyone can establish their legal effect.””
Robert stood.
“And the note?””
“We've documented it. We are also working to establish who wrote it and why it was kept with the other papers.””
Claire's fingers curled around the edge of the blanket.
“Was there anything else?””
Reed hesitated.
“We found a second envelope inside the cabinet. It was addressed to you.””
Claire looked confused.
“To me?””
“Yes.””
“Who was it from?””
“We haven't established that yet. I don't want to open or characterize anything beyond what the investigation allows.””
Robert looked at the envelope through its transparent evidence sleeve.
Claire's name was written across the front in black ink.
Beneath it was a date.
The date of her next prenatal appointment.
Claire stared at it.
“He knew I was going to try to leave,” she whispered.
Robert moved closer to the bed.
“We don't know exactly what he knew. We do know that you deserve to be safe while the facts are established.””
Reed nodded.
“That's right.””
Claire looked at the envelope again.
“Can I see what's inside?””
“Not right now. We'll follow the appropriate process and make sure the contents are handled properly.””
She swallowed and nodded.
After Reed left, Robert sat beside her.
The afternoon sunlight had shifted across the hospital floor. The monitor continued its steady rhythm, a small sound that made the room feel less empty.
Claire rested one hand over her stomach.
“I used to imagine bringing the baby home,” she said.
“Eric would carry the car seat, and I'd stand in the doorway taking pictures. My mother would have wanted to be there.””
Robert's throat tightened.
“She would have loved that baby.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I don't know what happens now.””
“We don't need to know everything today.””
She opened her eyes and looked at him.
“What if the papers mean I can't leave?””
“Then we'll get proper advice and find out what your options are. No document should stop you from seeking help or protecting yourself.””
“What if he takes everything?””
Robert held her gaze.
“Your safety is not something he gets to bargain with.””
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Claire picked up her phone and opened her father's contact.
Her thumb hovered above the call button.
Robert smiled faintly.
“You can call me from the next room if you want.””
She let out a shaky laugh.
“I know.””
She pressed the button anyway.
His phone rang in his pocket.
He answered immediately.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
Claire's face crumpled, but this time she was smiling through the tears.
“Hi, Daddy.””
Robert sat beside her with his phone pressed to his ear, even though he could hear every word without it.
“Hi, baby.””
For a few seconds, they simply listened to each other's breathing.
Then Claire's screen lit up with a new message from an unknown number.
She glanced at it.
The smile disappeared.
Robert saw her expression change.
“What's wrong?””
Claire slowly turned the phone toward him.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*Ask your father why he never told you what happened to your mother's inheritance.*
