Chapter 1: The Secret
“Daddy, she told me not to tell you.””
Nia’s tiny voice cut through the laughter like a knife.
Darius turned so fast that the champagne glass in his hand nearly slipped.
Across the long dining table, Simone stood frozen beneath the warm chandelier light, one hand resting protectively over the round curve of her pregnant belly.
For one strange second, nobody moved.
The mansion had been full of music only moments before. Family members had been laughing near the enormous windows, children had been chasing each other between the dining chairs, and someone had just raised a toast to the baby.
Now every Black face in the room had turned toward the six-year-old girl in the pastel party dress.
Nia stood beside her father, curly hair gathered beneath a little bow.
Darius lowered his glass.
“Tell me what?”” he asked.
Nia looked at Simone.
Simone’s lips parted.
“Nia,” she said carefully, “come here, sweetheart.””
She stepped forward.
Darius noticed the fear in her eyes.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
He moved between them before Simone could reach the child.
“Hold on.””
Simone stopped.
“Darius,” she whispered.
He looked down at Nia.
“Tell Daddy exactly what you were going to tell me.””
Nia squeezed the strap of her little party bag.
Simone swallowed.
“She’s confused,” Simone said quickly.
“It’s been a long day.””
Darius didn't look at her.
“Nia.””
The girl took a breath.
“She said the baby is a secret.””
A woman at the far end of the table slowly set down her fork.
Someone near the windows whispered, “What?””
Darius stared at Simone.
The confidence that had been on her face all evening was gone.
Her fingers tightened around her belly.
“Nia,” Simone said, her voice trembling now, “I never said that.””
“Yes, you did.””
“No, baby, I—”
“You said Daddy couldn't know.””
Darius’s jaw tightened.
“Couldn't know what?””
Simone looked at him.
For the first time since he had known her, she seemed unable to find an answer.
Darius took one slow step toward her.
“Simone.””
She backed up.
“Please don't do this here.””
“Do what?””
“Make this bigger than it is.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“You just heard what she said.””
“She’s six.””
“And she knows what she heard.””
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Nia looked from one adult to another, confused by the sudden tension.
Then she seemed to remember something.
“Oh!””
She crouched beside her chair.
Simone’s eyes widened.
“Nia, wait.””
The little girl opened her party bag.
Darius watched her small hands disappear inside.
“What are you looking for?”” he asked.
“My phone.””
Simone’s face went pale.
“No.””
Nia pulled something out.
Not a toy.
Not candy.
A smartphone.
A second smartphone.
The room seemed to shrink around them.
Darius stared at it.
Simone moved forward immediately.
“Nia, give me that.””
But Darius gently caught Simone’s wrist.
“Why?””
Her breathing changed.
“Darius, please.””
He released her and reached for the phone.
Nia handed it to him without hesitation.
“She made me hide this.””
Darius looked at Simone.
“Who made you hide it?””
Nia pointed directly at her.
“Simone.””
A few family members exchanged stunned looks.
Simone’s eyes filled with tears.
“That isn't what happened.””
Darius looked down at the phone.
The screen was dark.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then—
*BZZZT.*
The screen lit up.
A new message appeared.
*DNA RESULTS READY. DO NOT BRING DARIUS.*
Darius stopped breathing.
His thumb hovered above the screen.
Slowly, he raised his eyes toward Simone.
“Why can't I come?””
Simone said nothing.
Another notification began appearing beneath the first.
*ABOUT THE BABY'S FATHER—*
Simone lunged.
“Darius!””
May you like
He pulled the phone away.
And the entire room watched as his thumb moved toward the message.
