Chapter 10: The Truth They Buried
Darius stared at his brother.
For several seconds, neither man moved.
Then Darius slowly placed the photograph on the table.
“You knew.””
His brother, Andre, swallowed.
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
Darius's voice echoed through the mansion.
“You knew about Nia?””
Andre looked toward their father.
Their father said quietly, “Tell him.””
Andre shook his head.
“You tell him.””
“No,” their father said.
“This is your truth too.””
Darius stepped toward the stairs.
“Start talking.””
Andre descended slowly.
“When Nia was born, Simone was told she might never carry another pregnancy.””
Darius frowned.
“What does that have to do with Nia?””
“Everything.””
Andre stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
“She had complications during delivery. The doctors discovered that the baby wasn't genetically related to Simone in the way they expected.””
Darius stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Andre's eyes filled with tears.
“It means Nia wasn't conceived naturally.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Darius.
Darius's voice barely came out.
“Then how?””
Andre glanced at their father.
“Your father had been working with a fertility clinic.””
Darius turned sharply.
“My father?””
“He had been trying to help families who couldn't conceive.””
Their father nodded.
“Simone came to us because she wanted a child.””
Darius looked toward him.
“You?””
“I helped finance the clinic.””
“And you knew Simone?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Their father sighed.
“She was a family friend long before she became your wife.””
Darius shook his head.
“This doesn't explain Nia.””
Andre spoke.
“The clinic used genetic material from donors.””
Darius's eyes narrowed.
“And whose?””
Nobody answered.
Darius looked at his father.
“Whose?””
His father stepped closer.
“Mine.””
Darius froze.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Andre looked down.
Darius stared at his father as though seeing a stranger.
“You're saying Nia is…”
“Your biological sister.””
The words destroyed the room.
Darius stumbled backward.
“No.””
His father nodded sadly.
“Simone didn't know the donor was me.””
Darius shook his head violently.
“No.””
“She believed she was receiving anonymous donor material.””
“Why would you do that?””
“I was told the sample would remain anonymous.””
Darius's voice rose.
“And Nia?””
“She was implanted using that sample.””
Darius covered his mouth.
His father continued.
“When Nia was born, the clinic discovered the mistake.””
Darius looked at Andre.
“And you knew.””
“I found out later.””
“How?””
Andre's eyes filled.
“Because I was the one who discovered the records.””
Darius stared.
“Why did you hide them?””
“Mom begged me.””
Darius laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.””
Andre stepped closer.
“She was terrified. She thought the truth would destroy you.””
“It already did.””
“I know.””
Darius looked at his father.
“You let me raise my own sister.””
His father's face crumpled.
“I didn't know until after she was born.””
“You could've told me.””
“Yes.””
“But you didn't.””
“No.””
Darius looked away.
For years, he had believed his father's death had been the worst thing his family had ever survived.
Now he realized his father's silence had outlived him.
Then Darius remembered something.
“The baby.””
Everyone went still.
He looked at Marcus.
“The DNA test.””
Marcus nodded.
“That's why Simone ordered it.””
Darius turned toward the hallway.
“Where is she?””
A voice answered behind him.
“I'm here.””
Darius spun around.
Simone stood in the doorway.
Her beige maternity dress was stained with tears. Her dark hair had fallen loose around her shoulders.
She looked exhausted.
Darius stared at her.
“You knew?””
Simone nodded.
“Not everything.””
“When did you find out?””
“After Nia was born.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
She looked at Nia's photograph.
“Because I was afraid you'd hate her.””
Darius's eyes filled.
“She was six years old.””
“I know.””
“She called me Daddy.””
“I know.””
“And you thought I'd stop loving her?””
Simone began crying.
“I didn't know what you'd do.””
Darius looked toward the stairs.
Nia was watching them.
Her small face was frightened.
Darius immediately walked toward her.
He knelt.
She hesitated.
“Daddy?””
He opened his arms.
She ran into them.
He held her tightly.
Nothing else mattered for that moment.
Not blood.
Not laboratories.
Not secrets.
Just the little girl whose arms were wrapped around his neck.
“I love you,” he whispered.
Nia cried against his shoulder.
“I love you too.””
Darius closed his eyes.
Then he stood and faced Simone.
“You said the baby wasn't the only secret.””
Simone wiped her cheeks.
“No.””
She placed one hand over her pregnant belly.
“The DNA test wasn't about whether Marcus was the father.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then what was it?””
Simone looked at him.
“It was about whether the baby was related to Darius.””
Darius's heart tightened.
“And?””
Simone reached into her purse.
She pulled out a sealed laboratory envelope.
She held it toward him.
“I finally got the result.””
Darius didn't move.
“What does it say?””
Simone's voice trembled.
“It says the baby is genetically related to you.””
Darius stared.
Marcus exhaled.
“But that's impossible,” Andre whispered.
Simone looked at him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It's the first thing tonight that isn't.””
Darius took the envelope.
“Then why did the message say, ‘Do not bring Darius’?””
Simone looked toward the second phone.
“Because I wasn't afraid of the DNA result.””
“Then what were you afraid of?””
She looked at his father.
Everyone became silent.
Simone whispered:
“I was afraid someone had changed the records again.””
Darius's eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Andre suddenly looked at his father.
Their father shook his head.
“Don't.””
Andre's voice broke.
“Dad, it's over.””
Darius turned.
“What?””
Andre reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“I found the original clinic records.””
His father closed his eyes.
Darius took it.
“What do they prove?””
Andre looked at him.
“That the mistake wasn't an accident.””
Darius went still.
“What?””
Andre pointed toward the old photograph.
“Someone deliberately switched the donor files.””
Darius looked around the room.
“Who?””
Andre's eyes moved toward Yvonne.
Everyone turned.
Yvonne stood near the doorway.
She was crying.
Darius stared at his mother.
“No.””
Yvonne whispered, “I was trying to protect our family.””
“You switched the files?””
“I didn't know what would happen.””
“You made Nia my daughter on paper.””
Yvonne shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I made sure she stayed with the family that loved her.””
Darius stared at her.
Then at Nia.
Then at Simone.
And finally at the unborn child.
The entire mystery that had begun with a little girl saying, She told me not to tell you, suddenly made sense.
Nia hadn't been exposing a betrayal.
She had been protecting a secret she was too young to understand.
Simone hadn't hidden the second phone because she was cheating.
She had hidden it because the truth inside it could tear apart generations of her family.
Darius opened the laboratory envelope.
He looked at the result.
His eyes filled with tears.
*PATERNITY: 99.99% — DARIUS CARTER.*
He let out a shaky breath.
Simone watched him.
“I'm sorry.””
Darius looked at her for a long moment.
“I don't know how we're going to forgive all of this.””
Simone nodded through her tears.
“I understand.””
“But Nia doesn't have to pay for it.””
He walked to his daughter and took her hand.
Then he looked at the baby.
“Neither does this child.””
His father stepped forward.
“Darius…”
Darius raised a hand.
“Not tonight.””
His father stopped.
Darius looked around the mansion.
The flowers were scattered.
The champagne had gone warm.
The celebration was ruined.
But for the first time that night, nobody was hiding.
Darius squeezed Nia's hand.
Then Simone's.
Outside, the first light of morning began slipping through the enormous windows.
And on the dining table, beside the ruined celebration, the second phone lit up one final time.
A new message appeared.
*THE RECORDS HAVE BEEN RELEASED.*
Darius looked at the screen.
Then at his family.
This time, he didn't reach for the phone.
May you like
He didn't need another secret.
He had the truth.
