Chapter 12: The Company That Didn't Exist

I didn't sleep that night.

At 2:13 a.m., I sat at Rachel's kitchen table with my laptop open, examining the documents Vanessa had sent through her attorney.

Carter Family Holdings.

The name appeared on a registration document, a bank authorization, and a draft agreement connected to the guardianship arrangement.

My name appeared on all three.

So did Vanessa's.

Neither of us had signed them.

The company had been registered several months earlier using an address that belonged to a commercial mailbox service in Connecticut.

The listed manager was Marcus Bell.

I stared at the screen.

Bell.

His middle name was Bell, the same surname as the salon owner who had employed Maya.

I couldn't assume the two were connected merely because they shared a name. But I wrote it down for Helen to investigate.

At eight in the morning, I met Helen at her office.

She had already received copies of the documents.

"Have you ever authorized Marcus to act on your behalf in a business matter?"" she asked.

"No.""

"Have you ever been a member of an entity called Carter Family Holdings?""

"No.""

"Have you signed any bank forms for it?""

"No.""

She nodded.

"Then we'll need to document those answers and determine whether the registrations contain false information. I also recommend contacting the relevant financial institutions through their official channels to protect your identity.""

I handed her my employment records showing where I had been on the day the supposed consent was signed.

She examined the dates.

"This is useful. We'll preserve it alongside the other evidence.""

I leaned forward.

"Helen, what happens if Marcus used this company to receive the money from the Whitmores?""

"That depends on what the records establish. If funds were transferred into an account associated with the company, investigators will need to trace them. We shouldn't assume the final destination until we have the transaction history.""

"But he used our names.""

"That appears to be the case.""

I looked at the documents.

"He was trying to make it look as though we were working together.""

"Possibly. The false signatures and the company registration raise serious questions about that.""

I took a breath.

"What about Maya?""

"The immediate goal remains protecting her from an unauthorized transfer and ensuring that the proposed guardianship cannot proceed on the basis of false information. We'll continue working with the appropriate authorities.""

I nodded.

For the first time, I felt as though the chaos was becoming something we could examine piece by piece.

Not a mystery I had to solve alone.

A record of decisions, signatures, transfers, and messages that could be checked against reality.

That afternoon, Helen received a call from the intermediary's compliance officer.

The organization had suspended the proposed arrangement pending review and preserved its records. It had also confirmed that the five-thousand-dollar deposit came from the Whitmores.

No money had been transferred to the company yet.

That was a relief.

But there was another problem.

The intermediary had received a letter claiming that Maya's biological father had consented to the guardianship.

Ethan's signature appeared at the bottom.

His attorney had already confirmed that he had never signed it.

I leaned back in my chair.

"Marcus forged Ethan's signature too?""

"That's what the available information suggests," Helen replied.

"The document needs to be examined, and the appropriate authorities will determine what happened.""

I looked at the growing stack of papers.

My signature.

Ethan's signature.

Vanessa's genuine signature on documents she hadn't fully understood.

Maya's birth records.

A company that appeared to have been created using our names.

Marcus had built a structure out of other people's identities, then used it to make a child appear to be a financial obligation.

I was furious.

But beneath the anger was a new feeling.

Resolve.

I wanted every record examined. Every false statement exposed. Every person who had helped Marcus understand exactly what had happened.

And I wanted Maya to have a childhood again.

That evening, I drove to Rachel's house with dinner.

Maya ran to the door when she saw me.

"Dad! Aunt Rachel says we're having a movie night.""

"Sounds good.""

"Can we get pizza?""

"I brought pizza.""

She cheered.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

We ate at the kitchen table, argued playfully about which movie to watch, and settled on an animated adventure Maya had loved when she was younger.

Halfway through the movie, she fell asleep against my shoulder.

I carried her to the spare bedroom and tucked her in.

As I pulled the blanket over her, she opened her eyes.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Can I go back to school tomorrow?""

I smiled.

"That's the plan, unless the school needs us to arrange something different.""

"I miss my friends.""

"I know.""

She rubbed her eyes.

"Can you make pancakes on Sunday?""

"I can make pancakes any day you want.""

She smiled sleepily.

"Even if I don't earn eighty dollars?""

My throat tightened.

"Especially then.""

She closed her eyes.

I sat beside her until she was asleep.

Then I went downstairs and checked my phone.

A message had arrived from Vanessa's attorney.

It contained a scan of a handwritten note Marcus had left inside an old folder.

The note was addressed to Vanessa.

*Once the transfer is completed, delete the messages and tell Daniel the money was lost in the investment. If Ethan appears, let the lawyers handle him. Don't contact the Whitmores directly.*

Below that was a second paragraph.

*The company will protect us if anything goes wrong.*

I read the note several times.

Then I noticed the date.

It had been written two weeks before Vanessa purchased the iPhone.

Marcus had planned for the possibility that the arrangement would fail.

He had prepared a story for Vanessa to tell me.

He had anticipated Ethan's return.

And he had created a company that could make it look as though we were involved in the entire operation.

I sent the note to Helen.

She replied within minutes.

*Preserve the original if possible. Do not confront Marcus. We need to establish who wrote it and whether the other documents are connected.*

I looked toward the stairs.

Maya was sleeping peacefully.

I wanted to believe the worst was behind us.

But the next morning, Helen called with an update.

The company registration had been traced to an email address used by Marcus.

And a bank statement showed that someone had recently attempted to open a second account under my name.

This time, the application had been rejected.

The reason was listed in the bank's notes.

*Identity verification failed. Applicant unable to answer questions concerning employment history.*

I felt a chill run through me.

Marcus had been preparing another account.

Another place for money to disappear.

Another opportunity to use my identity.

Then Helen told me the final detail.

"The rejected application was submitted yesterday afternoon," she said.

"After you and I began challenging the guardianship.""

I stared at the phone.

Marcus knew the arrangement was collapsing.

He knew the documents were being examined.

And he was still trying to move money.

"Can the bank identify who submitted it?"" I asked.

"They're reviewing the records. The application included an appointment confirmation and a copy of an identification document.""

"Whose identification?""

Helen paused.

"Yours.""

I felt my hands go cold.

"Was I listed as the applicant?""

"Yes.""

"But I never went to the bank.""

"I know.""

I looked out the kitchen window.

A car had just pulled into Rachel's driveway.

It was a dark blue sedan I didn't recognize.

A man stepped out and looked toward the house.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A message from Marcus appeared.

*You should have left the past alone, Daniel. Now you've made this much bigger than it needed to be.*

I took a screenshot and sent it to Helen.

Then I went to the front window.

The man outside was holding a large envelope.

May you like

He walked toward the door.

And when Rachel opened it, he asked for Maya by name.
