Chapter 6: The Family Waiting for My Daughter
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Maya's words echoed in my head.
Another family.
Waiting for her.
I held her tightly, careful not to squeeze too hard, while she trembled against me.
"What did he mean by another family, sweetheart?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Did he say their names?""
"No. He said they had a big house and a pool. He said I wouldn't have to worry about money anymore.""
I looked over her head at Vanessa.
My wife had gone completely still.
"Do you know what he's talking about?"" I asked.
She pressed both hands against her mouth.
"Vanessa.""
"I thought it was a school placement.""
"Then why did Marcus tell Maya she'd be staying with another family?""
"I don't know!""
I could hear the panic in her voice, but I no longer knew whether it came from fear for Maya or fear of what the truth might expose.
I guided my daughter toward the couch.
"Sweetheart, I need you to stay with me while I make a few calls. You haven't done anything wrong. You don't have to protect anyone from the truth.""
Maya nodded.
I brought her a blanket and sat beside her.
Then I called Helen again.
When she answered, I told her what Maya had said.
Her tone changed immediately.
"Daniel, keep your daughter with you. Don't let anyone take her from the house. I'll contact my colleague now, and you should make a report to the appropriate authorities today. Explain the unauthorized financial activity, the signed travel authorization, and the messages about another family.""
"Could Marcus legally take her?""
"Don't rely on assumptions about what that document allows. Its validity and effect depend on the circumstances and the applicable law. The immediate issue is that you believe your child may be at risk. Preserve the evidence and get help.""
"I will.""
"And Daniel?""
"Yes?""
"Don't confront Marcus alone again.""
I looked at Maya.
"I won't.""
After the call, I contacted the local police non-emergency line and explained what had happened. I gave them the information I had and asked how to make a formal report. They instructed me to preserve the documents and arrange to speak with an officer.
While I waited for further instructions, Vanessa sat at the opposite end of the couch.
She had stopped crying.
Instead, she stared at the iPhone as if it contained the answer to every question she had been too afraid to ask.
"Give me the phone," I said.
She looked up.
"What?""
"The phone you bought today. Give it to me.""
"No.""
I held out my hand.
"Vanessa, I want to see the messages between you and Marcus.""
"You can't go through my private messages.""
I looked at Maya, who was pretending not to listen.
Then I lowered my voice.
"This isn't about your privacy anymore. You used money from our child to buy that phone, and the messages may explain what you arranged for her. If you want to cooperate, now is the time.""
Vanessa held the device against her chest.
For several seconds, I thought she would refuse.
Then she unlocked it and handed it over.
I didn't touch her accounts beyond what she voluntarily showed me. Instead, I asked her to open the conversation with Marcus and let me photograph the relevant messages.
At first, the exchange looked ordinary.
Questions about money.
Complaints about delays.
A few messages about the phone.
Then I found the conversation from the previous Friday.
*Vanessa:* Daniel is asking questions. I can't keep this going much longer.
*Marcus:* You need to stay calm. The transfer will be completed before Friday.
*Vanessa:* What happens to Maya?
*Marcus:* She goes where we agreed.
*Vanessa:* You promised me it was only temporary.
*Marcus:* And it will be, if you follow the plan.
I photographed the exchange.
Then I scrolled farther.
A message from Marcus appeared, dated Saturday.
*The people have already paid the reservation fee. If you back out now, you'll be responsible for the loss.*
My skin prickled.
I showed Vanessa.
"Who are these people?""
She shook her head.
"He never gave me their names.""
"How much did they pay?""
"I don't know.""
I looked at her.
"You agreed to send Maya somewhere in exchange for money, and you didn't even know who was receiving her?""
"That's not what I agreed to!""
"Then what did you agree to?""
She began to cry again.
"He told me a family wanted to help. He said they had resources, that they could give Maya a better education, and that I could use the money to pay off the debt. He said it would be like a temporary guardianship.""
I stared at her.
"Did you read the paperwork before signing it?""
"No.""
The answer came so quickly that I almost couldn't believe it.
"You signed documents giving someone else authority over our daughter without reading them?""
"Marcus said he had a lawyer prepare everything.""
"And you trusted him?""
"He's my brother!""
I stood up.
"That doesn't make him trustworthy.""
Vanessa looked toward Maya.
"Please don't say things like that in front of her.""
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
"You were willing to send her away, and now you're worried about what she hears?""
Maya pulled the blanket over her knees.
I immediately regretted raising my voice.
I sat beside her.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
She shook her head.
"It's okay.""
"No, it isn't. None of this is your fault.""
She looked at Vanessa.
"Mom, did you really want me to leave?""
My wife opened her mouth.
For a moment, I thought she might tell the truth.
Instead, she said, "I wanted you to have a better life.""
Maya's eyes filled.
"But I liked my life.""
Vanessa began sobbing.
My daughter looked down at her hands.
"I liked making pancakes with Dad. I liked going to the library. I liked sleeping in my own room.""
She paused.
"I didn't know I had to pay to stay here.""
Vanessa covered her face.
I wrapped an arm around Maya's shoulders.
"You never had to pay, sweetheart. You never will.""
A knock sounded at the door.
We all froze.
I stood and looked through the peephole.
A uniformed officer stood on the porch.
I opened the door and explained that I had called for guidance about my daughter's safety and the suspicious documents.
The officer introduced herself as Officer Reynolds. She asked to speak with Maya in a quiet room, and I accompanied my daughter while Vanessa remained in the living room.
Maya answered the questions slowly.
She described the salon, the daily payments, the threats about dinner money, and the phone call from Marcus.
Officer Reynolds listened without interrupting.
When Maya finished, the officer thanked her and told her she had done the right thing by speaking up.
Then she asked me to show her the messages and documents.
I handed over the photographs, the bank notice, the signed authorization, and the schedule from the salon.
She studied the paperwork carefully.
"Mr. Carter, I can't tell you what the investigation will establish, but these are serious concerns. Please don't delete anything, and don't allow anyone to pressure your daughter into changing her account of what happened.""
"I won't.""
She turned toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, I'd like to ask you some questions about the authorization and the financial transactions.""
Vanessa nodded weakly.
The officer spent nearly an hour speaking with her. I stayed with Maya in the kitchen, making hot chocolate while she sat at the table and wrapped both hands around the mug.
At one point, she looked up at me.
"Are you mad at Mom?""
I took a breath.
"I'm upset about what happened. But you don't have to decide how you feel about anyone right now.""
"Do you still love her?""
The question caught me off guard.
I looked toward the living room, where my wife was speaking quietly with the officer.
"I don't know what happens between your mom and me," I said honestly.
"But I love you. That isn't changing.""
Maya nodded.
She took a small sip of chocolate.
Then her phone buzzed on the table.
She flinched so violently that hot chocolate spilled onto her sleeve.
I picked up the phone.
The message was from an unknown number.
*Your father doesn't know the whole truth. Ask him why your birth certificate was replaced when you were three.*
I stared at the screen.
Maya read it over my shoulder.
"What does that mean, Dad?""
I couldn't answer.
Because I remembered something I had almost forgotten.
When Maya was three, Vanessa had told me that her original birth certificate contained an error in her middle name. She had handled the paperwork herself while I was working out of state.
I'd never questioned it.
I'd never asked to see the original.
Now, someone was claiming that the document had been replaced.
I showed Officer Reynolds the message.
She photographed the screen and advised us not to respond.
Then she asked Vanessa about the birth certificate.
My wife went pale.
"That was a clerical correction," she said.
"Who requested it?"" the officer asked.
"I did.""
"Why?""
"Because there was a mistake.""
"What mistake?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Officer Reynolds waited.
Finally, my wife whispered, "The original certificate listed someone else as the father.""
The room went silent.
Maya looked at me.
I felt as if every breath had become difficult.
"Who?"" I asked.
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"I don't know what his name was.""
"Vanessa.""
"I never saw the original long enough to read it properly. Marcus handled everything. He said it would be easier if we corrected the record before Maya started school.""
I stared at her.
"Marcus handled Maya's birth certificate?""
She nodded.
Officer Reynolds wrote something in her notebook.
Then my phone rang.
Helen's name appeared on the screen.
I answered immediately.
"Daniel," she said, "I've just reviewed the documents you sent me. There's a serious problem with the authorization Vanessa signed.""
"What kind of problem?""
A pause.
Then Helen said, "The document doesn't just authorize Maya to stay with Marcus. It appears to give him permission to arrange a permanent change of guardianship if certain financial conditions are met.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She had heard every word.
Her face crumpled.
May you like
And for the first time, she whispered the one thing I had been afraid to hear.
"Marcus told me the family would adopt her.""
