Chapter 3: The Name Nobody Expected

I turned around.

Standing near the doorway was a man I had never seen before.

He was older, maybe in his sixties, wearing a dark jacket despite the warm weather. He looked past everyone in the room and focused only on the photograph in my hand.

Vanessa went completely still.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Recognizing.

“Vanessa: You shouldn’t be here.””

The man’s eyes moved to her.

“Unknown man: Neither should you.””

The guests started whispering.

Maya grabbed my hand.

“Dad, who is that?””

“I don’t know.””

But Vanessa did.

That much was obvious.

The man stepped farther into the room.

“Unknown man: I heard there was a photograph.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“Vanessa: Leave.””

“Unknown man: After all these years, you’re still trying to control the story.””

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

Story.

That word bothered me.

Because it meant there was more.

More than a forgotten friendship.

More than an old photograph.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Marcus: Who is he?””

She didn’t answer.

The man looked at Maya.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Sadness.

“Unknown man: You must be Elena’s daughter.””

Maya moved closer to me.

“How do you know my mom?””

The man opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Vanessa interrupted.

“Vanessa: Don’t involve her.””

I stared at my sister.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

The man looked at me.

“Unknown man: Marcus, right?””

I nodded slowly.

“How do you know my name?””

He looked at the photograph.

“Unknown man: Because Elena talked about you.””

My heart stopped.

For six years, I had lived with questions I never asked because I believed I already knew the answers.

Now every answer was changing.

The man reached into his jacket pocket.

Everyone tensed.

But he only pulled out an old envelope.

“Unknown man: I was supposed to give this to Elena’s family.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

“Marcus: What is that?””

The man didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“Unknown man: You told him she never knew you.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Vanessa: Stop.””

“You told him there was no reason to look back.””

“Stop.””

“You told him the past was finished.””

Her voice cracked.

“Stop!””

The entire room fell silent.

I had never heard Vanessa sound afraid.

Not once.

Maya whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked down at the photograph.

Then at the envelope.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Marcus: What happened between you and my wife?””

She didn’t answer.

The man did.

“Unknown man: The truth is, Elena didn’t leave you a secret.””

He paused.

“She left you a warning.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Maya squeezed my fingers.

My mind raced.

A warning?

About what?

About Vanessa?

About someone else?

I looked at the back of the photograph again.

The hidden message suddenly felt heavier in my hand.

Before I could read it, Vanessa stepped between us.

“Vanessa: Marcus, don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And for the first time, I saw something I never thought I would see from my sister.

Regret.

“Vanessa: Because Elena didn’t want you to know what I did.””

The room went silent.

Then the old man’s phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Unknown man: It’s happening again.””

I frowned.

“What is?””

He looked directly at Maya.

May you like

And whispered a name.

A name that made Vanessa lose all color from her face.
