Chapter 6: The Box Under the Floor

Daniel did not answer the phone.

That scared me more than if he had.

Because whatever was happening, whatever had followed us into this birthday party, even he was afraid of it.

The ringing stopped.

The room remained silent.

Then Daniel placed the phone face down.

“Marcus: Who was calling?””

He looked toward the floor.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed him.

Not even Daniel.

Vanessa moved toward the table.

“Vanessa: This needs to end.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re opening.””

“Then help me understand.””

Her lips trembled.

For once, she had no perfect response.

No sharp comment.

No confident excuse.

Only fear.

Maya walked closer to me.

“Dad, can we just go home?””

I looked at my daughter.

That was what I wanted.

I wanted to take her away.

Drive somewhere quiet.

Forget this entire day.

But I couldn’t.

Because Elena had hidden something for a reason.

And now my daughter was standing in the middle of it.

I picked up the brass key.

“Where does this go?””

Daniel answered.

“To something Elena left behind.””

“Where?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She looked back.

Neither wanted to say it.

Finally Vanessa whispered:

“The house.””

I frowned.

“What house?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Your old house.””

The air left my lungs.

Our old house.

The place where Elena and I brought Maya home.

The place where we spent the happiest years of our lives.

The place we sold after Elena died because every room hurt too much.

I stared at Vanessa.

“How would you know about something hidden there?””

She looked down.

“Because I helped her hide it.””

Everyone reacted.

Even Daniel.

“You never told him?””

Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.

“No.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

But Maya was standing right beside me.

So I controlled my voice.

“Marcus: Start talking.””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time in my life, my sister looked old.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like years of carrying a secret had finally become too heavy.

“Elena and I knew each other before you met her.””

I waited.

“She wasn’t just someone I met once.””

My stomach tightened.

“How close were you?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“Closer than I wanted anyone to know.””

Daniel looked away.

I noticed.

But I didn’t ask yet.

Vanessa continued.

“When Elena came into your life, I disappeared.””

“Why?””

“Because she asked me to.””

That shocked me.

“Why would she ask that?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because she knew what I had done.””

The words hung there.

“What did you do?””

She looked at Maya.

Then away.

“I hurt her.””

Maya whispered:

“My mom?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa, tell him the whole truth.””

She shook her head.

“Not here.””

I looked at the guests.

Everyone understood.

This was no longer a party.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at the key.

“The old house.””

An hour later, I stood in front of the place I thought I had left behind forever.

The house looked smaller.

Older.

But the memories were still there.

Maya held my hand as we walked inside.

Daniel followed.

Vanessa stayed behind us.

Like someone entering a place where she expected judgment.

The rooms were empty now.

But I could still see Elena cooking in the kitchen.

Still hear her laughing.

Still see Maya taking her first steps across the living room.

I hated that this place, once filled with love, now felt like a crime scene.

Daniel walked toward the hallway.

“She hid it beneath the floor.””

I looked down.

“Where?””

He pointed.

The old wooden floorboard near the closet.

I knelt.

My hands shook as I lifted it.

Underneath was a small metal box.

Covered in dust.

Maya gasped.

“Dad…”

I pulled it out.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Click.

The lock opened.

Inside were three things.

A letter.

A second photograph.

And a small recording device.

Vanessa saw them.

And collapsed into the nearest chair.

“No.””

I picked up the letter.

The handwriting was Elena’s.

My heart broke just seeing it.

The first line was enough to make my hands go cold.

“Marcus…”

I whispered her name.

Then I read the next words.

And realized the letter was not written to me.

It was written to Maya.

I looked at my daughter.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“What does it say?””

Before I could answer, the recording device suddenly turned on.

A voice filled the empty room.

A voice I hadn’t heard in six years.

Elena.

“Marcus… if you’re hearing this, then Vanessa finally told you the truth.””

Vanessa covered her face.

And Elena’s voice continued.

“But there is something you need to know before you judge her.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

May you like

Then Elena said the words that changed everything.

“Because Vanessa is not the person who betrayed me.””
