Chapter 13: The Mother Who Raised Me

Emma read Charlotte's message three times.

Margaret wasn't your foster mother.

She was your biological mother.

The words blurred together until they became meaningless shapes on the screen.

“No,” Emma whispered.

Damien tried to sit up, wincing as pain pulled across his shoulder.

“Emma?””

She handed him the phone.

He read the messages, his expression shifting from confusion to disbelief.

“That's impossible.””

“Is it?”” Emma asked bitterly.

“Apparently, nothing in our family is impossible.””

“Margaret told you she found you at the hospital.””

“She said she was a nurse. She said she took me home because she couldn't bear to leave me alone.””

“Maybe she was protecting you.””

“From what? My own mother?””

Damien had no answer.

Emma stepped away from the bed and called Charlotte.

The call rang once before going to voicemail.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Then she sent a message.

Tell me the truth. Right now.

Charlotte replied with a photograph.

It showed a faded letter, written in blue ink. The paper was creased and stained, but the signature at the bottom was unmistakable.

Isabelle.

Emma read the letter.

Margaret, if anything happens to me, please take care of my daughter. Evelyn has threatened to separate the girls. Richard says he can protect them, but I no longer know whom to trust. You are the only person who has never asked me to choose between my children.

Emma's hands trembled.

Beneath the letter was another page.

The child I carry is not the child Evelyn believes she is taking. I have arranged everything with Margaret. If the plan fails, she must raise the baby as her own.

Emma looked at the date.

It had been written two weeks before the twins were born.

She read it again.

The child Isabelle carried was not the child Evelyn believed she was taking.

“What does that mean?”” Emma whispered.

Damien studied the photograph.

“Maybe Isabelle knew Evelyn planned to switch the wristbands.””

“Then why didn't she stop her?””

“Maybe she thought this was the only way to save one of you.””

Emma shook her head.

“Charlotte says Margaret was my biological mother.””

“But this letter says Isabelle was planning something with her.””

“Unless Charlotte is lying.””

The moment the words left her mouth, Emma regretted them.

Charlotte had spent twenty-eight years hiding from the same people who had stolen their identities. She had risked her life to find Emma.

Still, the truth seemed to change every time Emma touched it.

She called Margaret's old number, knowing it had been disconnected for years.

Then she opened the voice recordings saved from the night she discovered Margaret's hidden cassette.

There was another file she hadn't listened to.

The title read: For Emma — if she learns about Isabelle.

She pressed play.

Margaret's voice filled the room.

“My darling girl, if you're listening to this, then someone has finally told you about Isabelle. I wish I could have explained everything while I was alive. I tried so many times, but every time I looked at you, I saw the little girl who deserved a childhood without fear.””

Emma covered her mouth.

Margaret continued.

“I was not your birth mother. I need you to understand that. I was your mother in every way that mattered, but Isabelle gave birth to you. She was your biological mother, and she loved you more than you will ever know.””

Emma's knees weakened.

Damien reached for her, but she shook her head and held on to the bedside table.

“Isabelle asked me to raise you because Evelyn intended to make you disappear. I was supposed to take one baby from the hospital and deliver her to a safe home. But when I arrived, I discovered that the records had been switched. I realized the child I was meant to take wasn't the child Evelyn wanted hidden.””

Margaret's voice faltered.

“I couldn't leave you there. I took you home. I told myself I would find your sister and bring you together.

But Evelyn found out what I had done. She threatened to have you taken away from me unless I disappeared.””

Emma began to cry.

“I changed my name, moved across the country, and raised you as my daughter. I let you believe I was your foster mother because I thought the truth would put you in danger.””

The recording crackled.

Then Margaret said something that made Emma stop breathing.

“Isabelle survived the night you were born. She was not the woman who died in the river. The woman found beneath the bridge was Charlotte's guardian, a nurse named Eleanor Price. She had helped Isabelle hide the third child.””

Emma stared at the phone.

The body identified as Margaret Ellis had actually been Eleanor Price.

The name had been changed to conceal the crime.

Margaret's voice continued.

“Eleanor was killed because she knew where the original records were hidden. Isabelle was forced to leave the country. She stayed away because Evelyn threatened to kill you if she ever came back.””

Emma's tears fell freely.

“I'm sorry, my darling. I should have told you everything. But I wanted you to have a life that belonged to you, not to the Carter family.””

The recording ended.

For a long time, Emma couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, “Isabelle was alive when I was growing up.””

Damien nodded slowly.

“And she died eighteen months ago.””

“Why didn't she come back?””

“Maybe she thought Evelyn would hurt you.””

Emma looked at him.

“Then we need to find out where she went before she died.””

Damien reached for the hospital report on the bedside table.

“There may be an answer in the original records.””

Emma turned toward him.

“Then we're going back to the bridge.””

“No. You're not going anywhere alone.””

She almost argued, but something in his expression stopped her.

He wasn't trying to control her.

He was afraid.

For the first time, Emma saw the boy beneath the Carter fortune: a child who had grown up surrounded by people who called their cruelty protection.

“Fine,” she said.

“But you tell me everything you know. No more secrets.””

Damien nodded.

“I promise.””

They contacted Detective Morgan, who arranged for an officer to escort them back to the maintenance chamber.

The records were still there, but the filing cabinet had been disturbed. Someone had searched through the papers while they were at the hospital.

Emma's heart sank.

“Charlotte's letter,” she said.

“The original records may have contained the same information.””

Detective Morgan examined the empty folders.

“Whoever came here knew what they were looking for.””

Emma opened the metal box again and found a small envelope tucked beneath the false bottom.

Inside was a photograph of Isabelle standing outside a seaside cottage.

On the back, in her mother's handwriting, were four words:

If I cannot return.

Beneath them was an address in Maine.

Emma held the photograph against her chest.

“She's gone,” she whispered.

Damien placed a hand on her shoulder.

“I know.””

“No. You don't. You don't know what it feels like to spend your whole life believing your mother abandoned you, only to discover she was alive and afraid. You don't know what it feels like to realize every person you loved was forced to lie to you.””

Damien lowered his head.

“You're right.””

Detective Morgan approached them with a sealed envelope.

“This was delivered to the station an hour ago. No return address.””

Emma opened it.

Inside was a recent photograph of Charlotte, standing beside a woman with silver hair.

The woman was older, thinner, but her eyes were unmistakable.

Isabelle.

Emma stared at the photograph, unable to breathe.

On the back, someone had written:

Your mother did not die eighteen months ago.

Emma looked up at Detective Morgan.

“Where was this taken?””

The detective turned the photograph over again.

“According to the timestamp, three days ago.””

Emma's phone rang.

A woman's voice whispered, “Emma, darling.””

Emma froze.

It was the voice from the recording.

The voice she had heard in her dreams without ever knowing why.

“Mom?””

A soft sob came through the line.

“Yes, sweetheart. It's me.””

Emma clutched the phone.

“Where are you?””

“Listen carefully. You mustn't trust Damien.””

Emma turned toward him.

He was staring at her, his face drained of color.

Her mother continued.

“Because the man you think is protecting you is the one who helped me disappear.””

May you like

The call ended.

And Damien Carter said nothing.
