Chapter 9: The Man Who Paid for Silence

Emma waited until Detective Morgan had escorted Damien outside before she approached the empty hallway.

The address on the paper had been visible for only a second, but she had memorized it.

A narrow street in Boston.

A building number.

And a date written beside it.

Three months earlier.

The same month Isabelle had died.

Emma stood beneath the hospital's fluorescent lights, trying to understand what she'd seen.

Damien had insisted he didn't know where Charlotte was.

Yet someone had written her name and the word alive on a note he was carrying.

Had he been searching for her?

Or had he been paying someone to keep her hidden?

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Detective Morgan.

Please remain at the hospital. We need your statement.

Emma typed a response.

I will. I need to make one phone call first.

She didn't wait for an answer.

Instead, she called the number Charlotte had used the previous night.

It went straight to voicemail.

Emma tried again.

Nothing.

She stared at the screen.

Then a message appeared from the same unknown number.

You saw the note, didn't you?

Emma's fingers tightened around the phone.

Who are you?

The reply came immediately.

Someone who has been waiting for you to stop believing the Carter family.

Are you Charlotte?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally, the answer came.

No. But I know where she is.

Emma closed her eyes.

Tell me.

Boston. Tonight. Come alone.

A location pin followed.

It matched the address on Damien's note.

Emma looked toward the hospital entrance.

The police were questioning Damien in a nearby office. If she told Detective Morgan about the message, officers would probably accompany her.

But the sender had explicitly asked her to come alone.

And if this was her only chance to find Charlotte, Emma couldn't risk frightening whoever had contacted her.

She sent the location to Lily with a short message.

If you don't hear from me by midnight, give this to Detective Morgan.

Then she ordered a rideshare.

The journey to Boston took nearly two hours.

As the city lights appeared through the rain, Emma felt the familiar sensation of her life splitting into two versions.

In one, she was the woman who had grown up believing she was unwanted.

In the other, she was the daughter of Isabelle Carter, the sister of a missing woman, and the living evidence of a crime that had been concealed for twenty-eight years.

She didn't know which version frightened her more.

The address led to a narrow brick building near the river.

There was no sign above the entrance. The windows were dark, and a security camera turned toward her as she approached.

A buzzer sounded.

“Emma Ellis?”” a man's voice asked through the speaker.

“Yes.””

“Come upstairs.””

The door clicked open.

Emma climbed two flights of stairs and entered a small office furnished with a desk, a filing cabinet, and two mismatched chairs.

A man in his sixties stood beside the window.

He wore a brown coat and held a paper cup of coffee.

“I'm Peter Walsh,” he said.

“I worked for Richard Carter.””

Emma stopped.

“Worked how?””

“I was his personal accountant for fifteen years.””

She looked at the desk.

“Are you the person who sent me the messages?””

“No. I was asked to contact you.””

“By whom?””

Peter hesitated.

“Charlotte.””

Emma's heart slammed against her ribs.

“Where is she?””

“Safe, for now.””

“Then take me to her.””

“I can't.””

Emma's hope collapsed.

“Why not?””

“Because she doesn't know whether she can trust you.””

Emma stared at him.

“I'm her sister.””

“That's what you've been told.””

The words stung.

Peter set down his coffee.

“I'm not questioning your identity. I'm telling you that Charlotte has spent twenty-eight years being lied to by people she loved. She won't risk exposing herself until she's certain you're not being used.””

“Used by whom?””

He looked at her carefully.

“Damien Carter.””

Emma's stomach tightened.

“You know about the transfer.””

Peter nodded.

“I discovered the payment when I reviewed the Carter accounts after Isabelle's death. Two million dollars was transferred to a company registered under a false name. The company was controlled by Dr. Harris.””

“Damien said he didn't authorize it.””

“Perhaps he didn't.””

Emma frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Peter opened a drawer and removed a thick folder.

“Richard Carter established a private trust before his death. It was intended to protect his children if anything happened to him. The trust included a clause that transferred control of a substantial portion of the estate to the surviving biological heirs.””

Emma stared at him.

“The twins?””

“Yes. If both girls survived, the inheritance would be divided equally between them. If one was declared dead, the surviving child would inherit the entire amount.””

Emma felt cold.

“How much money are we talking about?””

“Approximately eighty million dollars at the time the trust was created. Far more today.””

She sank into the nearest chair.

“So someone separated us because of the inheritance.””

“That was part of it.””

“What was the other part?””

Peter's face darkened.

“Your mother had discovered financial irregularities in the family business. She intended to expose them. Richard wanted to support her, but he died before he could make things right.””

Emma thought of the letter in the storage unit.

I have tried to stop what is happening, but my mother has made arrangements I cannot undo.

“Was Richard murdered?””

Peter looked away.

“I can't prove that.””

“But you suspect it.””

“Yes.””

Emma felt sick.

“And you think Damien paid Dr. Harris to keep Charlotte hidden?””

“I think someone used Damien's account to make that payment. Whether Damien knew about it is another question.””

Peter opened the folder.

Inside were copies of bank transfers, handwritten notes, and a photograph of a woman standing outside a hospital.

Emma recognized her immediately.

Charlotte.

She looked older than in the photographs, with shorter hair and a tired expression. But the scar above her eyebrow remained.

“When was this taken?””

“Six months ago.””

Emma touched the image.

“Where?””

“Outside a clinic in Boston. Charlotte had been receiving treatment under an assumed name.””

“Why didn't she contact me?””

“Because she was afraid you would be used against her.””

Emma looked up.

“By Damien?””

“By anyone connected to the Carter family.””

Peter pulled another document from the folder.

“This is the reason Richard's trust matters. The inheritance was scheduled to transfer to the surviving child when she turned thirty. But there's a complication.””

Emma read the clause.

The surviving heir had to appear before an independent trustee and provide biological proof of identity.

If both twins were alive, the estate would be divided equally.

If the second twin was found before the transfer, the entire arrangement would be reconsidered.

Emma frowned.

“When do I turn thirty?””

“In less than two years.””

“And Charlotte?””

“She turned thirty on the same date you did.””

Emma stared at him.

“Then why is the trust still unresolved?””

“Because someone has kept the official records showing one twin's death. If those records are overturned, the entire inheritance could be frozen while the fraud is investigated.””

Emma understood.

Someone had spent twenty-eight years protecting eighty million dollars by ensuring one twin remained dead on paper.

“Who benefits if the truth stays hidden?””

Peter gave a humorless smile.

“That's the question I have been trying to answer.””

He placed a final document on the desk.

It was a copy of the original trust agreement.

Emma scanned the page.

The primary beneficiary was listed as Isabelle Carter.

The secondary beneficiaries were her children.

But at the bottom, a handwritten amendment had been added shortly before Richard's death.

If both children are presumed deceased, the estate shall pass to the appointed guardian.

Emma's blood ran cold.

“Who was the guardian?””

Peter didn't answer immediately.

Then he turned the page.

The signature was unmistakable.

*Damien Carter.*

Emma stared at it.

“But Damien was six years old when his father died.””

“Exactly.””

“Then how could he be appointed guardian?””

“He couldn't. Not legally. The amendment was altered after Richard's death.””

Emma felt the room spin.

“Who changed it?””

Peter leaned forward.

“That's what Charlotte has been trying to prove.””

He opened another folder and slid a photograph across the desk.

It showed Evelyn Carter standing beside a man outside a courthouse.

Emma recognized the man.

Dr. Samuel Harris.

But the date printed beneath the photograph was impossible.

It was dated two years before the twins were born.

Peter watched her reaction.

“Evelyn and Harris were working together long before your mother became pregnant.””

Emma's mouth went dry.

“Why?””

“Because Isabelle wasn't the first woman in the family to discover that the Carter fortune was built on stolen money.””

He lowered his voice.

“Charlotte found records suggesting that Evelyn had been using false identities and fraudulent guardianship arrangements for decades. The twins were not the first children she tried to control.””

Emma thought of the hospital wristband.

The missing records.

Margaret's confession.

And the message warning her not to trust Damien.

“Then where does Damien fit into all of this?””

Peter looked at the door.

“That's what I can't tell you.””

A knock sounded.

Peter froze.

Someone knocked again, harder this time.

He moved toward the desk and opened a concealed drawer.

Inside lay a small handgun.

Emma stared at him.

“Who is it?””

Peter didn't answer.

The door opened.

Damien Carter stood in the doorway, his face pale and his tie loosened.

Behind him stood Detective Morgan.

“Emma,” Damien said.

She rose slowly.

“What are you doing here?””

“I followed the location from the message you sent Lily.””

Emma's stomach dropped.

“How did you know about that?””

“Because Lily gave the police your message, and Detective Morgan showed me the address.””

Emma looked at the detective.

“You let him follow me?””

“I didn't,” Morgan replied.

“He was already on his way when I received the location.””

Peter stepped between them.

“You shouldn't have come here, Damien.””

Damien's eyes narrowed.

“Peter Walsh.””

“You remember me.””

“I remember the man who helped my father hide his accounts.””

Peter's face hardened.

“And I remember the boy whose mother taught him to look away.””

Damien took a step forward.

“Tell Emma what happened the night Charlotte disappeared.””

Peter gripped the desk.

“You know what happened.””

“I know what you told the police. I want to hear what you told Richard.””

Emma looked between them.

“Enough. Somebody tell me the truth.””

Damien turned toward her.

“The two-million-dollar transfer wasn't made by me. It was authorized using a duplicate security key that my mother kept in her office.””

Peter shook his head.

“Convenient.””

“I have the access logs.””

“Then why didn't you give them to the police?””

“Because the logs show that the transaction was approved from a terminal inside my father's old study.””

Emma's throat tightened.

“Which means?””

Damien's eyes met hers.

“Someone has been using the study's credentials to make payments in my name.””

Peter's face suddenly changed.

He looked toward the open doorway.

“No,” he whispered.

A sharp crack split the air.

The window shattered.

Peter collapsed behind the desk.

Emma screamed as Damien pulled her to the floor. Detective Morgan drew her weapon and shouted for everyone to stay down.

Glass scattered across the office.

Outside, an engine roared to life.

Emma crawled toward Peter.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Peter! Stay with me!””

He struggled to breathe.

With trembling fingers, he caught her wrist.

“Charlotte,” he whispered.

“Where is she?””

He pressed something into her palm.

A small brass key.

“Under the bridge,” he gasped.

“The place where Richard kept the original records.””

Emma leaned closer.

“Which bridge?””

Peter's eyes rolled toward the window.

He managed one final sentence.

“Ask Damien what happened to the first body.””

Then his hand fell away.

Detective Morgan shouted for an ambulance.

Emma stared at the key, her fingers slick with blood.

Damien knelt beside her.

“Emma, we need to go.””

She looked at him.

“The first body?””

His expression changed.

For the first time since she had met him, Damien Carter looked genuinely terrified.

Because whatever Peter Walsh had been about to reveal, Damien already knew what it meant.

And he knew Emma was finally close enough to uncover it.
