Chapter 4: The Door Beneath The Hotel

I had spent fifteen years imagining the face of the person responsible for Amara’s disappearance.

I imagined someone cruel.

Someone obvious.

A monster I could recognize instantly.

But the man standing across the lobby wasn’t what I expected.

He looked ordinary.

That was the worst part.

A clean suit.

Perfect posture.

A calm expression.

The kind of person strangers trusted.

The kind of person who could destroy a life without raising his voice.

Eli hid behind me.

“Do you know him?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“But he knows you.””

I looked at the man.

He wasn’t looking at me anymore.

He was looking at the photograph inside my purse.

He knew.

Somehow, he knew.

I grabbed Eli’s hand.

“We need to move.””

We walked quickly toward the service hallway.

Behind us, I heard footsteps.

Not running.

Walking.

Following.

The hotel was still bright.

Still beautiful.

Still full of people.

But everything felt different now.

Every camera.

Every employee.

Every closed door.

Everything felt like it was watching.

We reached a storage area near the back corridor.

There was an old elevator.

The kind guests never used.

A small sign hung above it.

*Authorized Personnel Only.*

I pulled out the key Marcus gave me.

My hands shook.

Eli watched silently.

“What if my mom is down there?””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw something beyond fear in his eyes.

Hope.

That scared me more.

Because hope was fragile.

And I had already seen what happened when people believed impossible things.

I had believed Amara was coming home.

For years.

The elevator lock clicked.

The doors opened.

Inside was a small metal panel with one keyhole.

Not a button.

A keyhole.

I inserted the key.

The elevator moved downward.

Neither of us spoke.

The deeper we went, the colder it became.

Finally, the doors opened.

A dark hallway stretched ahead.

At the end was one door.

Old.

Heavy.

Waiting.

Eli whispered:

“My mom said never to come here.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“She said this place keeps secrets.””

I walked toward the door.

The key fit perfectly.

That terrified me.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had known I would come.

I turned the key.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was a small hidden room.

Not abandoned.

Not empty.

A desk.

Files.

Photographs.

Records.

My heart started racing.

On the wall were dozens of pictures.

All connected to one person.

Amara.

I stepped closer.

There were pictures of her leaving the hotel.

Pictures of her entering rooms.

Pictures of her meeting people.

Pictures taken without her knowledge.

My stomach twisted.

Someone had been watching her.

For years.

Eli stood beside me.

“Nia…”

I looked at what he was pointing toward.

A folder on the desk.

My name was written on it.

*NIA CARTER*

I couldn’t breathe.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Reports.

Notes.

And one photograph.

A photograph of me.

Taken fifteen years ago.

The night Amara disappeared.

I turned the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

A message.

My hands went numb as I read it.

*She wasn’t taken because of what she knew.*

I swallowed.

Then I read the next line.

*She was taken because of what Nia knew.*

I dropped the photograph.

“What?””

Eli looked at me.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because suddenly every memory I had spent fifteen years trusting felt uncertain.

The arguments with Amara.

The night she vanished.

The last conversation we had.

Everything.

A sound echoed from the hallway.

The door closing.

Someone was inside with us.

I turned slowly.

The man in the dark suit stood in the doorway.

Calm.

Silent.

Watching.

Then he said the one thing I never expected to hear.

“Nia…”

His eyes moved to the photograph on the floor.

“You finally found out why your sister disappeared.””

I stepped in front of Eli.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled slightly.

And when he answered, my entire understanding of the last fifteen years shattered.

“I’m the person who spent fifteen years protecting Amara from you.””

I stared at him.

The room went silent.

And then, from somewhere deeper inside the hidden room, a phone began ringing.

A phone that had been waiting for me.

May you like

A phone that only one person could have left behind.

A phone with Amara Carter’s name glowing on the screen.
