Chapter 7: The Room Where She Hid
The door was unlocked.
That scared me more than if it had been sealed.
Someone wanted us to enter.
Someone wanted me to find this room.
I pushed it open.
Inside was not a prison.
Not a hiding place.
A home.
A small room hidden beneath the hotel.
A bed.
A desk.
Books stacked neatly.
A faded blanket.
A coffee cup sitting beside a notebook.
Everything was frozen in time.
Like Amara had left five minutes ago.
Not fifteen years ago.
Eli stepped inside slowly.
“My mom stayed here.””
I turned.
“You’ve been here?””
He nodded.
“Sometimes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked ashamed.
“She told me not to.””
I softened.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Eli looked at the room.
“She always said secrets were heavy.””
I walked toward the desk.
There were dozens of notebooks.
All labeled with dates.
Years.
Names.
Evidence.
I opened the first one.
The handwriting was Amara’s.
My hands shook.
*Day 14 after leaving Nia.*
I stopped breathing.
Leaving Nia.
Not leaving everyone.
Me.
I turned the page.
*I watched my sister today from across the street. She looked happy. That is the only thing keeping me alive.*
I covered my mouth.
She had been close.
All these years.
Close enough to see me.
Far enough to stay hidden.
I kept reading.
*Nia thinks I abandoned her. I deserve her anger. But if she knows the truth, they will use her against me.*
My eyes filled.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
The room gave no answer.
Eli sat on the edge of the bed.
“My mom cried every birthday.””
I looked at him.
“She did?””
He nodded.
“She kept your pictures.””
My chest hurt.
“She remembered everything.””
I looked around the room.
A life hidden underground.
A woman erased from the world.
A sister who sacrificed everything.
I turned another page.
Then I saw it.
A name.
Written over and over.
*Thomas Carter.*
My father.
I stopped.
My father had died eight years ago.
Everyone said his heart gave out.
Everyone said he was devastated by Amara’s disappearance.
But the notebook told another story.
*Thomas knows.*
*Thomas is afraid.*
*Thomas will choose the foundation over family.*
I closed the notebook.
“No.””
Eli looked at me.
“What?””
“My father.””
A voice came from behind us.
“You finally understand.””
I spun around.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
But instantly recognizable.
My mother.
Evelyn Carter.
I couldn’t move.
She looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Nia.””
The sound of my name from her mouth felt impossible.
“You’re alive.””
She nodded.
Barely.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed.
A painful, broken laugh.
“That’s all anyone says.””
She stepped forward.
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
She didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t deny it.
“I lied.””
“Why?””
Her face collapsed.
“Because your father was going to kill Amara.””
The room went silent.
Eli stared at her.
I couldn’t breathe.
“My father?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He found out Amara had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She looked at the notebooks.
“Proof that he had been using the foundation for years.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I know what you want to believe.””
Her voice cracked.
“You want to believe your father was a good man.””
Because she was right.
I did.
“He loved us.””
Evelyn looked away.
“Sometimes people can love their family and still destroy them.””
The words hurt because they sounded true.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I knew what would happen.””
“What?””
“They would take you too.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the lights in the room flickered.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“No.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Certain.
Evelyn whispered:
“They found us.””
I looked toward the door.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of my old life.
“The person who replaced your father after he died.””
I frowned.
“Replaced?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The person who has controlled everything since.””
The door opened.
And standing there was someone I had seen many times.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had comforted me after Amara disappeared.
Someone who had attended my father’s funeral.
Someone who knew every secret in our family.
My father’s closest friend.
The man who became the head of the Carter Foundation.
The man who had spent fifteen years helping me search.
He smiled sadly.
“Nia.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
He looked at Evelyn.
Then at me.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
My voice barely worked.
“Why?””
His smile disappeared.
“Because Amara was never the biggest threat.””
May you like
He looked at Eli.
“She was protecting you from what came after.””
