Chapter 1: What Was on Her Phone
“Please stop!””
My four-year-old daughter’s scream cut through the bright afternoon sunlight as my wife ran electric clippers through her little girl’s hair. A thick lock fell onto the bedroom floor, landing beside the white dress my daughter had worn that morning.
I was standing in the hallway when I heard her.
By the time I reached the bedroom doorway, Monica had already made a second pass.
Maya sat stiffly on a small stool in front of the mirror, tears streaking her cheeks. Her tiny hair bows lay on the dresser. One side of her hair was shorter than the other, and loose strands clung to her damp face.
Monica held her shoulder with one hand and the clippers with the other.
“You need to learn respect,” she said.
Maya twisted away.
“Daddy!””
My work boots stopped against the bedroom threshold.
For a second, I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing.
Monica wore the patterned blouse I'd bought her for our anniversary. Her braided updo was neat. Her fingernails were freshly polished. She looked like the woman who smiled politely at neighbors and brought homemade cookies to church gatherings.
But her hand was digging into my daughter's shoulder.
And my little girl was terrified of her.
“What are you doing?!”” I shouted.
Monica jerked her head toward me. Her thumb snapped the clippers off.
The sudden silence made Maya's sobs sound even louder.
“Daddy!”” Maya cried again, stretching both arms toward me.
I crossed the room in three strides.
Monica released her shoulder, but she didn't move out of my way.
“Darius, calm down,” she said.
“You're making this worse.””
I lifted Maya off the stool and pulled her against my chest. Her small fingers twisted into the fabric of my dark work uniform.
“It's okay, baby. Daddy's here.””
She buried her face against my neck.
I could feel her trembling.
“What happened to her hair?”” I demanded.
Monica placed the clippers on the dresser as if she'd merely finished an ordinary household chore.
“She was being disrespectful.””
“She is four years old!””
“And she needs boundaries.””
I looked at the floor. Hair covered the area beneath the mirror. Some pieces were long enough to reach Maya's shoulders. Others were short, jagged clumps that couldn't possibly have come from a simple trim.
My jaw tightened.
“You took clippers to her head without asking me?””
Monica folded her arms.
“I'm her stepmother, Darius. I live here. I help raise her. I shouldn't need your permission for every little thing.””
“Every little thing?”” I repeated.
Maya's arms tightened around my neck.
Monica pointed toward the stool.
“She threw a tantrum this morning. She refused to listen, and I told her there would be consequences.””
“What did she do?””
“She was rude.””
“What did she actually do?””
Monica's eyes narrowed.
“Don't interrogate me in front of her.””
I stared at her.
“You want privacy? You can explain yourself after I make sure my daughter is okay.””
I carried Maya toward the bed and sat down with her in my lap. The large bedroom windows let in bright daylight, illuminating the uneven patches around her ears.
She looked up at me with red, frightened eyes.
“Daddy, am I in trouble?””
Something inside me seemed to crack.
“No, baby. You haven't done anything wrong.””
Monica let out a sharp breath.
“See? This is exactly the problem. You always rescue her. She knows she can cry and get whatever she wants.””
I turned toward my wife.
“Stop talking about her like she's manipulating you. She's a child.””
“She needs discipline.””
“Then explain why you're cutting her hair with electric clippers!””
Monica glanced at the dresser.
For the first time, I noticed her smartphone propped against the mirror. The camera faced the stool where Maya had been sitting.
I looked from the phone to my wife.
“Why is your camera pointed at her?””
Monica reached for it.
“I was checking something.””
I shifted Maya higher in my arms.
“Checking what?””
“Darius, give me a minute.””
She picked up the phone, tapped the screen, and turned it facedown.
That small movement made the room feel different.
I had seen Monica lose her temper before. I had seen her become cold when she didn't get her way. But this wasn't the ordinary irritation of a frustrated adult.
She had arranged the phone.
She had positioned Maya in front of the mirror.
And she had continued cutting while my daughter begged her to stop.
I looked at the scattered hair again.
“Did you take pictures of her?””
Monica's expression hardened.
“Why would I do that?””
“I'm asking you a question.””
“And I'm telling you that you're overreacting.””
Maya suddenly lifted her head.
Her gaze darted toward Monica's phone.
Then she leaned close to my ear.
“Daddy,” she whispered, her voice shaking.
“She took pictures first.””
I stopped breathing for a moment.
Monica went completely still.
I looked directly at her.
“What pictures?””
She stepped toward us.
“Darius, don't let a four-year-old turn this into something it isn't.””
I rose from the bed with Maya in my arms.
“I'm not letting anybody do anything. I'm asking you what you photographed.””
Monica's lips parted, but no answer came.
I reached for the phone on the dresser.
She moved toward it at the same time.
“Don't touch my phone!””
Her voice cracked across the room.
That was when I knew the photographs mattered more to her than the explanation she'd been giving me.
I picked up the smartphone.
The screen was already unlocked.
A message thread sat open beneath a series of image thumbnails.
At the top of the conversation, two words glowed against the white screen.

*PHOTOS SENT.*
And beneath them was a message that made the blood drain from my face.
