Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Door

“Ask her about the baby.””

The words seemed to drain every bit of warmth from the hallway.

Vanessa still had her fingers wrapped around my wrist. Her nails pressed into my skin, but I barely felt them.

“What baby?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“Marcus, don't.””

The woman behind the door began crying.

“Please,” she whispered.

“I can't keep doing this.””

I pulled my arm free.

Vanessa stepped in front of the lock.

“You don't understand what you're about to do.””

“Then explain it.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what? A woman locked in a storage room?””

“It's not what you think.””

I stared at her.

“You keep saying that. Every time I ask you a question, you tell me I don't understand. I'm done being the only person in this house who doesn't understand anything.””

Behind me, Maya had pressed herself against the wall. Her little hands were clasped together, and her eyes kept moving between Vanessa and the door.

I turned toward her.

“Sweetheart, go to your bedroom for a moment.””

Her expression changed immediately.

“No, Dad. Please don't make me go.””

I crouched beside her.

“I'm not sending you away. I just want you somewhere quiet while I figure this out.””

She grabbed my sleeve.

“That's what Vanessa said before.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she say?””

Maya looked at Vanessa, then back at me.

“She said people who ask too many questions sometimes have to leave.””

Vanessa snapped, “That is not what I said!””

Maya flinched.

I stood.

“Another word directed at her, and this conversation is over. You will speak to me.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Fine. You want the truth? Claire has been having a breakdown.

She came here because she had nowhere else to go. I was helping her.””

“Then why lock her in?””

“She isn't locked in.””

I pointed at the door.

“Open it.””

Vanessa didn't move.

I held out my hand.

“The key.””

For a moment, she looked as though she might refuse. Then her fingers slowly opened.

The brass key lay in her palm.

I took it.

The lock turned with a sharp click.

When I pulled the door open, the first thing I noticed was the smell. Stale air, cold coffee, and something faintly medicinal.

It wasn't a storage room.

A narrow bed stood against the far wall. Beside it sat a small table covered with prescription bottles, bottled water, and unopened food containers. A lamp illuminated a woman sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Claire.

Vanessa's younger sister looked thinner than I remembered. Her dark hair hung loosely around her face, and shadows had formed beneath her eyes.

But it was the way she stared at me that made my stomach tighten.

She looked like someone who had been waiting for rescue.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

I stepped inside.

“Claire, what happened?””

She glanced at Vanessa.

“Can I come out?””

I looked at my wife.

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“She needs to calm down first.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“That's what you've been telling me for weeks.””

I moved aside.

“Come out.””

Claire stood slowly. Her legs seemed unsteady, and she caught the edge of the table before taking another step.

When she reached the hallway, Maya stared at her.

“Hi, Maya,” Claire said softly.

Maya didn't answer.

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

Vanessa grabbed her sister's arm.

“Don't start.””

I caught Vanessa's wrist.

“Let her go.””

My wife released Claire, but she immediately turned on me.

“You have no idea what she has done to this family.””

“Then tell me.””

“She lied. She manipulated everyone. She made choices, and now she wants me to clean up the consequences.””

Claire's face crumpled.

“I made one mistake,” she whispered.

“One mistake, and you used it to control every part of my life.””

Vanessa pointed toward the bedroom.

“Go back inside.””

“No.””

The single word seemed to surprise them both.

Claire straightened her shoulders.

“No, Vanessa. I'm not going back in there.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“You have nowhere else to go.””

“I had a home before you convinced everyone I couldn't be trusted.””

“You lost that home because of your own decisions.””

“And you promised you would help me.””

The sisters stared at each other.

I looked from one to the other.

“What does this have to do with a baby?””

Claire covered her mouth.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound was the hum of the air conditioner.

Then Claire looked at me.

“Vanessa told you we were at the hospital the week before your wedding, didn't she?””

I remembered the story.

Vanessa had said Claire was suffering from anxiety and needed someone to accompany her to a routine appointment. I had offered to drive them, but Vanessa told me it was a private matter between sisters.

I had accepted that explanation.

“Yes,” I said.

Claire nodded slowly.

“That wasn't a routine appointment.””

Vanessa stepped toward her.

“Claire, don't.””

“I was pregnant.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

I looked at Vanessa, waiting for her to deny it, to explain it away, to tell me there was some reasonable explanation.

Instead, she stared at the floor.

Claire wiped her cheeks.

“I found out two months before your wedding. The father left. I was scared, and Vanessa promised she'd help me.””

“What happened to the baby?”” I asked.

Claire's voice broke.

“I lost him.””

For one terrible second, I felt ashamed of my own suspicion. I had imagined a secret affair, some betrayal connected to my marriage. I hadn't considered the grief behind the locked door.

But Claire wasn't finished.

“I was in the hospital when Vanessa came to see me,” she continued.

“She told me she had something important to discuss. She said she needed my help with something that would change her life.””

Vanessa's face turned rigid.

“That's enough.””

Claire looked directly at me.

“She told me she was afraid you would never marry her if you knew the truth about why she wanted to become Maya's mother.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would she think that?””

Claire shook her head.

“Because she knew you were still grieving Emily. And she knew Maya was the one person you would always put first.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the doorframe.

“Claire, I swear to God—”

But Claire took another step toward me.

“Marcus, your wife didn't just want to become part of your family.””

She looked at Maya.

May you like

Then she looked back at me.

“She wanted something your daughter had.””
