Chapter 8: The Secret Rebecca Carried

Daniel refused to discuss the case over the phone.

He arrived at my house shortly after eight the following morning, carrying a leather briefcase and wearing the exhausted expression of a man who had spent the night preparing for a conversation he had hoped never to have.

Maya was eating breakfast at the kitchen island when he walked in.

She looked up from her bowl of cereal.

“Are you here to make Vanessa leave?””

Daniel set down his briefcase and crouched beside her.

“I'm here to help your dad make sure you're safe.””

“Can Vanessa take my food again?””

The question silenced him.

He glanced at me.

I looked away, ashamed.

“No,” I said before Daniel could answer.

“Not anymore.””

Maya nodded and returned to her cereal.

Daniel waited until she had gone upstairs before opening his briefcase.

He laid three documents on the kitchen table.

The first was Emily's letter to him.

The second was a copy of her will.

The third was a hospital report bearing Rebecca's name.

“Before we go any further,” Daniel said, “I need you to understand that some of what Emily suspected was never proven. She wanted answers, but she didn't live long enough to get them.””

I leaned forward.

“Start with Rebecca.””

Daniel folded his hands.

“Rebecca became pregnant shortly before Emily's illness worsened. She was unmarried, frightened, and struggling financially. Emily helped her find medical care and offered to support her after the baby was born.””

“What happened to the child?””

“Rebecca gave birth to a boy. His name was Noah.””

I thought of the photograph.

The tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

“Why did I never hear about him?””

“You did. Emily mentioned Rebecca's pregnancy once, but you were preparing for a work trip. You probably don't remember.””

I didn't.

The realization made me feel sick.

Daniel continued.

“After Emily died, Rebecca said she needed time away from the family. Vanessa told you Rebecca was struggling emotionally and didn't want visitors. She also told Rebecca that you needed space to grieve.””

“So they were keeping us apart?””

“That's what Rebecca claims.””

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, a delivery truck pulled into the driveway. The ordinary sight of it seemed obscene against the growing darkness of my understanding.

“Why would Vanessa do that?””

Daniel opened Emily's letter.

“Emily was concerned about Maya's inheritance. She had established a trust that would provide for your daughter until she reached adulthood. You were named trustee, with Daniel—” He stopped and corrected himself.

“With me as the independent legal adviser. Emily wanted the funds protected from anyone who might pressure you to use them for purposes unrelated to Maya.””

“How much money are we talking about?””

“Enough that the trust required careful administration. The exact amount isn't the important part. What matters is that Vanessa had no legal authority over it.””

I stared at him.

“Did she try to access it?””

“Emily documented several suspicious inquiries made before her death. She believed someone had tried to obtain information about the trust through Rebecca.””

I shook my head.

“Rebecca?””

“Emily didn't believe Rebecca was responsible. She suspected Vanessa had used Rebecca's personal information without her knowledge.””

I sat down.

The forged medical authorization suddenly seemed less like an isolated act and more like part of something planned.

“Why did Vanessa want Maya's medical records?””

Daniel looked at the hospital report.

“That's where things become complicated.””

He slid the document toward me.

It described a medical consultation requested by Emily shortly before her death. She had been concerned about a possible hereditary condition that ran in her family. The doctors had recommended further testing for certain relatives, including Maya and Rebecca's newborn son.

I read the report twice.

“Was Maya sick?””

“No. The report does not establish that she was. It recommends screening and follow-up, not a diagnosis.””

“Then what was Vanessa looking for?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Rebecca believes Vanessa wanted to learn whether Noah could be connected to Maya's inheritance or medical care in some way. She also believes Vanessa wanted access to the trust through a guardianship arrangement.””

I stared at him.

“Why would Noah have any connection to Maya's inheritance?””

“That's one of the questions Rebecca wants answered. Emily's documents mention a provision that could affect how certain family assets were managed if both children needed support. But the details were never finalized.””

I felt anger rising again.

“So Vanessa was trying to get control of a trust meant for my daughter?””

“We cannot conclude that yet,” Daniel said firmly.

“We need records, statements, and a proper investigation. But the forged authorization is concerning, and the documents you found justify taking this seriously.””

I rubbed my face.

“What happened to Noah?””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Rebecca says Vanessa convinced her to let the baby stay with her temporarily while Rebecca recovered from complications after delivery. Vanessa told her she had arranged a safe place for him.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

“Rebecca claims she was later told the baby had been placed with another family. She never received the paperwork she expected. When she questioned Vanessa, she was told she was too unstable to care for him.””

I stared at him.

“Are you saying Vanessa took a newborn away from his mother?””

“I'm saying Rebecca alleges that happened. We need to establish what actually occurred.””

I looked at the hospital report again.

The date was almost three years earlier.

The same period when Vanessa had first begun spending time around my family.

I remembered her telling me she had always wanted to adopt a child. She had spoken about it as though it were a private dream, something she had given up on because life had taken a different path.

I had admired her for being willing to become a stepmother instead.

Now I wondered whether I had misunderstood every conversation we'd ever had.

My phone rang.

The caller's name was unfamiliar.

I answered cautiously.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice spoke.

“Marcus? My name is Rebecca Hale. I'm Emily's sister.””

I gripped the phone.

“Rebecca. Daniel just told me about you.””

She exhaled shakily.

“Then you know about Noah.””

“I know what Daniel told me. I need to hear it from you.””

There was a pause.

“I can come over,” she said.

“But I need you to promise me something first.””

“What?””

“Don't let Vanessa near Maya.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“I won't.””

Rebecca's voice broke.

“Because if Vanessa finds out what I have in my possession, she'll do anything to keep you from seeing it.””

“What do you have?””

“A recording,” she whispered.

“Vanessa made it the night Noah was born. She thought it would protect her.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does it say?””

Rebecca began to cry.

“It proves she knew exactly what she was doing.””

The call ended a moment later.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel closed the briefcase.

“Marcus, whatever that recording contains, don't confront Vanessa alone. We need to let the authorities handle the evidence.””

I nodded.

But my mind was already racing.

If Rebecca was telling the truth, Vanessa hadn't simply become controlling after our wedding.

She might have entered my life with a plan.

And my daughter might have been part of that plan from the beginning.

A sound came from upstairs.

Maya called my name.

I hurried to her bedroom.

She stood beside her bed, holding a small envelope.

“Dad,” she whispered, “I found this in Vanessa's drawer when I went to get my school sweater.””

My heart tightened.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””

“I was scared.””

She handed me the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

On the back, in Vanessa's handwriting, were six words.

One child can change everything.

Beneath the photograph was a hospital bracelet bearing the name Noah Reed.

I looked at Maya.

“Sweetheart, where exactly did you find this?””

She pointed toward the hallway.

“In the drawer beside Vanessa's bed.””

Then she whispered, “Dad, I think Vanessa wanted me to have a brother.””

I stared at the bracelet.

May you like

Because if Noah was Rebecca's son, and Vanessa had taken him away, the question was no longer just why my wife wanted control of Maya.

It was what she had planned to do with both children.
