Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Richard Hale was standing beside my wife in the photograph.
Not at a charity event. Not at a business meeting. Not in some crowded public place where two people might accidentally appear together.
They were standing outside our lake house.
Claire was wearing the red scarf she had worn on the night of the accident. Richard stood close behind her, one hand resting on her shoulder.
And Claire was smiling.
But it wasn't the smile I remembered.
It was forced. Her eyes were swollen, and her fingers were gripping the strap of her handbag as if she were afraid someone might take it away.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
Three days before the accident.
“James,” I said quietly, “look at this.””
My attorney examined it.
“Where did you get it?””
“Someone left it in Sophia's bedroom.””
Hannah stepped closer.
“That's the lake house.””
I looked at her.
“You recognize it?””
She nodded.
“I went there once.””
“When?””
“The week before Claire died.””
My stomach tightened.
“What were you doing there?””
Hannah looked toward the hallway, checking that nobody was listening.
“Claire called me. She said she needed help moving something.””
“What?””
“A box.””
“What was inside?””
“I never saw it. She wouldn't let me open it.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Why didn't you tell me any of this before?””
“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””
I almost shouted at her.
“You could have trusted me!””
Hannah's eyes filled.
“I tried, Daniel. I tried three years ago.””
She reached into her pocket and removed an old phone.
The screen was cracked. The battery was dead.
“Claire gave me this the night before the accident. She told me to keep it somewhere safe.””
“What's on it?””
“I don't know. I never managed to unlock it.””
James took the device.
“Do you have the charger?””
Hannah nodded.
“It's at my apartment.””
Before we could discuss it further, Sophia appeared at the top of the staircase.
“Daddy?””
I immediately put the photograph inside my jacket.
“Sweetheart, you should be resting.””
She slowly descended, holding the railing.
Hannah moved toward her.
“Careful, sweetheart.””
Sophia smiled.
“I can do it.””
I watched her take one step.
Then another.
Her movements were awkward, but she didn't stop.
When she reached the bottom, she looked at me proudly.
“Did you see?””
I knelt and hugged her.
“I saw, sweetheart.””
She glanced at Hannah.
“Can I tell him now?””
Hannah nodded.
Sophia sat beside me on the sofa.
“Daddy, I remember the lake house.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What do you remember?””
“The night Mommy disappeared.””
I held her hand.
“Your mother died in the accident, sweetheart.””
Sophia shook her head.
“No. I remember Mommy getting out of the car.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
“She told me to stay inside. She said she'd be right back.””
I swallowed.
“Where was the car?””
“Near the lake house road.””
Hannah knelt beside her.
“Sophia, do you remember who was there?””
Sophia nodded slowly.
“Uncle Richard.””
I closed my eyes.
“Are you sure?””
“He was shouting at Mommy.””
“What was he saying?””
Sophia's fingers tightened around mine.
“He said she had to give him the little girl.””
James looked up sharply.
“What little girl?””
Sophia looked confused.
“The baby.””
My heart seemed to stop.
“What baby, sweetheart?””
“Mommy said no. She said the baby was ours.””
I couldn't breathe.
Sophia continued.
“Then Uncle Richard opened Mommy's door. He told her she had made a terrible mistake.””
Hannah covered her mouth.
I pulled my daughter closer.
“What happened next?””
Sophia's eyes filled.
“There was a loud noise.””
“What kind of noise?””
“Like something breaking.””
She began trembling.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy told me to hide under the seat.””
I held her tightly.
“You're safe now.””
But Sophia wasn't finished.
She looked directly at Hannah.
“That's when you came.””
Hannah's face crumpled.
I turned toward her.
“You were at the lake house that night?””
She nodded.
“I arrived after Claire called me.””
“Why?””
“She told me Richard had taken the baby. She was going to confront him.””
“Did you see what happened?””
Hannah shook her head.
“I arrived just after the crash. The car was against a tree. Claire was unconscious. Sophia was crying.””
I stared at her.
“And you took Sophia to the hospital?””
“Yes. I called emergency services. But before the ambulance arrived, Richard appeared.””
My jaw tightened.
“What did he do?””
“He told me to leave. He said he would handle everything.””
“Why did you obey him?””
“Because he showed me a gun.””
James stood up.
“Did you report that?””
“I tried. But the police said there was no weapon recovered from the scene.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Richard had been with Claire three days before she died.
He had been at the crash scene.
He had controlled Sophia's medical records.
And he had somehow made sure I never learned about my second daughter.
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Richard Hale.
I answered and put it on speaker.
“Daniel,” he said warmly.
“I've been trying to reach you.””
I said nothing.
“I'm concerned about last night's incident. Sophia seemed confused, and I think that waitress may have upset her.””
I looked at Hannah.
Then at the photograph.
“What happened at the lake house, Richard?””
Silence.
A long, uncomfortable silence.
Then he laughed softly.
“I have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Claire's photograph says otherwise.””
His voice changed.
“Listen to me carefully. Don't make decisions based on something a frightened child says.””
“Did you know Claire was pregnant?””
Another silence.
Then Richard said something I would never forget.
“Daniel, there are things your wife did that you were never supposed to discover.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.

A second later, a message appeared.
*Bring Sophia to the lake house tonight. Come alone. If you want to know where your other daughter is, you'll do exactly as I say.*
