Chapter 9: The Third Daughter
I watched the video seventeen times.
Each time, Claire's words became more painful.
Before Sophia.
Her name is Grace.
Three daughters.
I had spent seventeen years believing Sophia was my only child.
Now I was discovering that my wife had carried secrets I had never imagined.
But the worst part was not the number of children.
It was the fact that someone had spent years making sure I never found them.
James paused the video on Claire's final frame.
“Daniel, there's something we need to establish.””
I looked at him.
“Whether Grace is alive.””
“Exactly.””
“And whether Richard knows where she is.””
James nodded.
I picked up the flash drive.
“Then we find the original records.””
We returned to St. Mary's with a formal legal request.
Dr. Brooks met us in the administration office.
When I mentioned Grace, her face changed.
“Where did you hear that name?””
“My wife.””
The doctor closed the office door.
“I was hoping this wouldn't come up.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
“Tell me what you know.””
She opened a locked cabinet and removed an old folder.
“Grace was born sixteen years ago. Your wife delivered her prematurely.””
I felt my legs weaken.
“Sixteen?””
Dr. Brooks nodded.
“The baby survived. But Claire's family situation was complicated. There was a dispute over custody.””
“What custody dispute?””
“Your wife's parents believed she was too young to raise a child at the time.””
I stared at her.
“Claire had Grace before she met me?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
I had loved Claire for twenty years.
We had shared a home, a marriage, a daughter.
And I had never known she had given birth to another child before we met.
“Where is Grace now?””
Dr. Brooks opened the folder.
There was an old placement record.
*Temporary guardianship: Margaret Hale.*
I looked up.
“Margaret?””
“Yes. Your wife's twin sister.””
The pieces began falling into place.
Margaret had raised Grace.
Richard had taken Lily.
And Sophia had somehow survived the accident.
“Was Grace adopted?””
“Not legally. Margaret was listed as her temporary guardian.””
“Why?””
“Claire wanted to give her daughter a stable home while she completed her education. She planned to bring her back when she was ready.””
I looked at the date.
Sixteen years earlier.
Claire had never mentioned this.
“Did Margaret know about the other girls?””
Dr. Brooks nodded.
“She knew about Sophia and Lily.””
“Then why didn't she come forward?””
The doctor looked down.
“Because she disappeared.””
James leaned forward.
“When?””
“Three years ago. Shortly after the accident.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Was she taken to Hawthorne?””
Dr. Brooks hesitated.
Then she nodded.
I stared at the photograph of Claire and Margaret.
Two identical faces.
Two women connected by three daughters.
And Richard had somehow managed to erase both of them.
“Do you have an address for Grace?””
Dr. Brooks turned to the final page.
There was a school registration record.
Grace had attended a private boarding school in Vermont.
But her file contained a more recent address.
A small town outside Boston.
James photographed it.
“We'll verify this before we go.””
I stood.
“No more waiting.””
At four in the afternoon, we arrived at a modest house on a quiet street.
There were flowers in the front garden and a bicycle leaning against the porch.
A teenage girl was sitting on the steps with a book.
She looked up as we approached.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
Claire's eyes.
I stopped walking.
The girl slowly stood.
“Can I help you?””
I couldn't find my voice.
James stepped forward.
“Are you Grace?””
Her expression changed.
“Who wants to know?””
“My name is Daniel Moretti.””
She dropped the book.
For several seconds, she simply stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“Mom said you'd come eventually.””
My heart broke.
“Your mother?””
“Margaret.””
I swallowed.
“Do you know Claire?””
Grace looked away.
“She died.””
“No.””
She frowned.
“What?””
“Your mother is alive.””
Grace laughed nervously.
“That's not funny.””
“I'm not joking.””
She stepped backward.
“Who are you really?””
I took the photograph of Claire from my jacket.
Grace looked at it.
Her lips trembled.
“Where did you get that?””
“It's your mother.””
She touched the photograph with two fingers.
Then she looked at me.
“Why do you have her picture?””
I took a breath.
“Because she's my wife.””
Grace's face went completely still.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You're Daniel?””
I nodded.
She began shaking her head.
“Mom said you didn't know about me.””
“I didn't.””
“Why not?””
I had no answer that could make sense to a sixteen-year-old girl.
So I told her the truth.
“Because I didn't know you existed.””
Grace stared at me.
Then she turned and ran inside.
A few seconds later, an older woman appeared in the doorway.
She was holding a kitchen towel.
Her face was pale.
“Daniel?””
I recognized her from the photograph.
Margaret.
Claire's twin sister.
She looked at James.
Then at Hannah, who had followed us inside.
And finally at me.
“You shouldn't have come here.””
I stepped toward her.
“Where is Claire?””
Margaret began crying.
“She's alive.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
Margaret looked toward Grace.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Richard took her after the fire.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire had finally remembered everything.””
I felt a chill.
“Remembered what?””
Margaret closed the front door.
Then she walked toward a small cabinet and removed a photograph.
It showed three newborn babies lying beside each other.
I stared.
Three girls.
Three identical hospital bracelets.
Grace.
Sophia.
Lily.
But the dates didn't make sense.
Grace had been born sixteen years ago.
Sophia was seventeen.
Lily was three.
I looked at Margaret.
“What am I looking at?””
She sat down.
“Claire had three pregnancies, Daniel. But the first two weren't the whole story.””
My mind struggled to follow.
“What do you mean?””
Margaret pointed to the three babies.
“Grace was born first. Then Sophia. But Lily was not Claire's biological child.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Lily was adopted from another family. Claire discovered the adoption papers when she began investigating Richard's financial dealings.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why did she say Lily was ours?””
Margaret began crying.
“Because Claire was raising her as her daughter. The biological parents had died, and Richard had arranged the adoption through Eleanor.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Then why did Richard steal her?””
“Because Lily's biological father left something behind.””
“What?””
“A trust.””
James stepped forward.
“What's in it?””
Margaret looked at him.
“More than two hundred million dollars.””
The room went silent.
I slowly turned back toward Margaret.
“Who is Lily's biological father?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she said a name.
“Richard Hale.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
James stood motionless.
Grace appeared in the hallway, listening.
Margaret continued.
“Lily is Richard's biological daughter. Eleanor couldn't have children, so Richard arranged for the infant to be raised as their adopted child. Claire discovered the truth and threatened to expose him.””
I stared at her.
“So Richard stole his own daughter from Claire?””
“Yes.””
“And the money?””
“Lily inherited it from her biological grandfather. Richard has been trying to control the trust since her birth.””
I looked toward Grace.
“Why would Claire protect Lily?””
Margaret wiped her cheeks.
“Because she loved her. Because Lily was innocent. And because she believed every child deserved to know the truth.””
Then Grace spoke.
“There's something else.””
We all turned.
She was holding a small envelope.
“Mom told me to give this to Daniel if he ever came.””
I took it.
Inside was a photograph of Claire standing outside a house.
On the back was an address.
And beneath it, a message in Claire's handwriting:
*If Daniel finds Grace, tell him the truth about the accident.*
My hands shook.
I looked at Margaret.
“What truth?””
She stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“Richard wasn't driving the car that night.””
I frowned.
“Then who was?””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Claire was.””
I felt the room spin.
“She was driving?””
Margaret nodded.
“She had been trying to escape with Sophia and Lily. Richard was following her. When she reached the bridge, another car came from the opposite direction.””
“Who was driving that car?””
Margaret looked toward Grace.
Then back at me.
“Your daughter.””
I couldn't move.
“Which daughter?””
Margaret's voice broke.
“Grace.””
The girl standing in the hallway began crying.
“I was only thirteen,” she whispered.
“I didn't know who was in the other car.””
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Grace held out another photograph.
It showed a damaged vehicle.
A familiar registration plate.
My old car.
The one I had given to Claire years earlier.
Grace whispered:
“I was in the car that hit my mother.””
May you like
And before I could ask another question, she added:
“Richard told me you were the one who ordered me to do it.””
