Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Buried

For a few seconds, nobody in that conference room moved.

Not even the people who had spent their entire careers making decisions under pressure.

Because there are moments when a room full of powerful people becomes just a room full of scared people.

And I was scared too.

Not because of Ethan anymore.

Not because of Daniel.

Because for the first time, I looked at my father and wondered if there were parts of him I had never known.

Richard Vale had always been my protector.

My hero.

The man who taught me that honesty mattered more than winning.

But now someone was saying he had hidden something.

Something serious enough that Ethan believed it could destroy everything.

My father stared at Daniel.

“Explain.””

Daniel hesitated.

“I think you already know.””

The security men shifted slightly behind us.

My father raised one hand.

A silent command.

Nobody moved.

Nobody interrupted.

“Daniel,” Richard said, “you have five minutes to tell me exactly what you mean.””

Daniel nodded.

His confidence was gone.

“I didn’t know what Ethan planned at first.””

My eyes narrowed.

“But you knew something.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“How long?””

“A few months.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Everyone had secrets.

That was what I was learning.

Everyone.

“My husband was planning something for months,” I said quietly.

“And people around him knew?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know he would hurt you.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“You didn’t know he would leave me on a highway?””

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

My father’s expression hardened.

“What did Ethan find?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Records.””

“Of what?””

“Your first company acquisition.””

The room became silent.

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

There was something in his eyes I had never seen before.

Regret.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to do that.””

“Do what?””

“Look at me like that and expect me not to ask questions.””

The room was silent.

I had spent my whole life seeing my father as unbreakable.

But standing there, I realized something.

Strong people still carry things.

They just carry them quietly.

Richard sat down.

For the first time that day, he looked older.

“Before I built this company, before I became the person everyone knows, I made choices.””

Daniel nodded.

“Choices that created enemies.””

My father looked at him.

“You’re done talking.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. She deserves to know.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

My father stared at the table.

Then finally spoke.

“Thirty years ago, I bought a struggling company.””

I listened carefully.

“It was almost bankrupt. The owners were ready to sell. I rebuilt it.””

“That doesn’t sound like a secret.””

“It wasn’t the purchase.””

He paused.

“It was what happened before.””

I waited.

“There were financial records showing someone inside the company had been stealing from employees.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“And?””

“And I found out who.””

“Who?””

My father’s face tightened.

“My business partner.””

The words hit me.

“You had a partner?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I know about him?””

Richard looked away.

“Because he died.””

The room went still.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He died shortly after the investigation began.””

“How?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

“I was told it was an accident.””

I felt a chill.

“But you didn’t believe that.””

“No.””

The way he said it told me everything.

“Then why hide it?””

My father looked at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“From what?””

“From a world where people sometimes spend decades waiting for revenge.””

The word hung there.

Revenge.

I looked at Daniel.

“And Ethan found this?””

Daniel nodded.

“He believed the records connected to that old situation were worth more than money.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Where did he get access?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“From me.””

The room exploded.

Not with noise.

With emotion.

My father stood.

“You.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I made a mistake.””

“You helped him.””

“I thought he was trying to uncover corruption.””

“And when did you realize he was using my daughter?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Silence.

That silence was the confession.

I felt sick.

My father turned away.

Not because he was weak.

Because if he looked at Daniel, I knew something dangerous would happen.

I walked closer to my father.

“Is any of this true?””

He looked at me.

“Which part?””

“All of it.””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Yes.””

My heart broke in a way I wasn’t prepared for.

Not because my father was a criminal.

Because he was human.

And I hated that I had forgotten he could make mistakes.

“What else don’t I know?””

Richard closed his eyes.

For a moment.

Just one moment.

Then he opened them.

“There is one more thing.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The person who contacted Ethan first…”

He stopped.

“Was not Marcus.””

The room went cold.

“Who was it?””

My father looked toward the door.

Nobody spoke.

Then he said a name.

A name that made my entire body freeze.

“Your mother’s brother.””

I stared at him.

“My uncle?””

May you like

Richard nodded.

“And he’s been alive this whole time.””
