Chapter 8: The Man Who Returned

I spent the entire drive home trying to understand one sentence.

My uncle was alive.

It sounded impossible.

Because my entire life, I had believed he was gone.

Not just gone.

Lost.

My mother had told me very little about her brother. She always became quiet whenever his name came up.

I remembered asking once when I was younger.

“Where is Uncle James?””

My mother had looked at my father.

Then she simply said:

“Some people leave because they choose to.””

At the time, I thought she meant he moved away.

I thought he started a new life somewhere else.

I never imagined there was a story hidden underneath.

My father drove silently.

That was unusual.

Richard Vale always filled silence with answers.

Now he was creating silence because he didn’t have the right ones.

Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“How long have you known?””

He kept his eyes on the road.

“Known what?””

“That he was alive.””

A pause.

“Seven years.””

My breath caught.

Seven years.

“You knew for seven years?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I turned toward the window.

I hated that phrase.

Because every secret in my life came wrapped in those words.

Protection.

Love.

Family.

People used beautiful words to hide painful choices.

“Did Mom know?””

My father’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“Yes.””

That hurt more.

Because my mother had always been the person I believed would tell me the truth.

“What happened between them?””

Richard was quiet.

Then he said:

“Your uncle James believed I stole something from him.””

“What?””

“The company.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you believe his version of events.””

“And what is your version?””

My father looked tired.

“My version is that James made decisions that put everyone at risk.””

I wanted more.

I needed more.

But before I could ask, his phone rang.

He answered.

“Talk.””

His expression changed immediately.

“What do you mean missing?””

I watched him carefully.

“Check every location.””

A pause.

“No. Don’t contact him yet.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

Richard looked at me.

“Ethan disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He was released after questioning.””

“Why?””

“Because we didn’t have enough to hold him.””

I felt anger rise.

“He abandoned me.””

“I know.””

“He stole from you.””

“I know.””

“He tried to manipulate everything.””

“I know.””

“Then how is he walking around?””

My father looked at me.

“Because knowing someone did something and proving it are different things.””

I hated that he was right.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

My father immediately noticed.

“Don’t answer.””

I stared at the screen.

It rang again.

And again.

Something inside me told me I needed to know.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

“Claire.””

My blood went cold.

I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it before.

Because my father’s reaction told me who it was.

He reached for my phone.

But I held it away.

“Who is this?””

The man laughed softly.

“You sound just like your mother.””

My entire body froze.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your uncle.””

I looked at my father.

His face had gone pale.

“James.””

My uncle continued.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

My voice shook.

“You worked with Ethan.””

“I spoke with Ethan.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“It’s a warning.””

My father mouthed one word.

Hang up.

But I couldn’t.

“Why did you involve my husband?””

Another pause.

“Because he was already looking.””

“Looking for what?””

James sighed.

“The truth.””

I felt anger building.

“You don’t get to destroy my life and call it truth.””

For the first time, his voice softened.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

“Then why did you let him leave me?””

Silence.

Real silence.

Then he said:

“I didn’t know he would do that.””

I closed my eyes.

Another person claiming they didn’t know.

Another person pretending their choices didn’t have consequences.

“What do you want?””

James answered immediately.

“I want your father to admit what he did.””

My father stepped closer.

I could see the anger in his face.

“Admit what?””

James heard him.

A small laugh came through the phone.

“He didn’t tell you?””

I looked at my father.

My heart started racing.

“Tell me what?””

James spoke slowly.

“The company your father built.””

A pause.

“The money.””

Another pause.

“The reputation.””

His voice lowered.

“All of it started with a lie.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Unable to move.

Unable to speak.

My father looked at me.

And in his eyes, I saw the truth before he said anything.

There was something else.

Something he had hidden.

Something that could destroy everything I thought I knew about my family.

May you like

And this time…

even my father couldn’t protect me from it.
