Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in Marcus’s Name
Marcus stared at his father.
For twenty years, Richard Reed had been the one person in his life who never disappeared.
And now he stood in the doorway of an old house, looking like a stranger.
The rain tapped against the windows.
Victor Hale stood behind him, silent and confident.
Elena looked terrified.
Not because Richard had arrived.
Because Marcus had finally learned the truth.
Or at least part of it.
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
“You said she betrayed this family.””
His eyes moved toward Elena.
“Then tell me what she did.””
Richard stepped inside and closed the door.
The sound echoed through the small house.
“I think you should sit down.””
Marcus laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
“After twenty years of lies, you want me to sit down?””
Richard’s face tightened.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
The room went silent.
Richard looked older than Marcus remembered.
Not weaker.
Just tired.
Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.
“Elena was never supposed to come back into your life.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
Then back at his father.
“Why?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Victor did.
“Because some things are better left buried.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“You’ve been following me.””
Victor smiled slightly.
“You noticed.””
“Who are you?””
Marcus already knew.
But he wanted to hear it.
Victor walked farther into the room.
“I’m someone who knew your family before you became the man everyone sees today.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“And you brought him here?””
Richard said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Marcus felt something inside him crack.
“You brought the man who ruined my family into this house?””
Elena immediately stepped forward.
“No, Marcus.””
Her voice was urgent.
“Don’t listen to them together.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still do that.””
Elena’s expression changed.
“Do what?””
“Protect him from the truth.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
That scared him.
More than any accusation.
More than any document.
Because both of them seemed afraid of the same thing.
The truth.
Richard slowly walked toward the table.
He picked up the letter Marcus had been reading.
His fingers brushed over the paper.
“You found this.””
Marcus watched him.
“You knew about it?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Marcus felt his anger rise.
“You knew?””
Richard looked at him.
“I knew she kept records.””
“Records?””
“Proof.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You mean proof of what?””
Richard looked at Elena.
Then back at Marcus.
“Of what happened before you were born.””
The words made Marcus freeze.
Before he was born?
“What are you talking about?””
Elena looked away.
Richard sighed.
“Your mother told you about Victor. She told you about the company. She told you about the documents.””
Marcus nodded.
“She did.””
Richard’s eyes hardened.
“But she didn’t tell you why she started investigating me.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
His mother remained silent.
“Why?”” Marcus asked.
Richard answered.
“Because she was looking for the truth about your birth.””
The room became completely silent.
Marcus felt the world slow down.
“My birth?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
She couldn’t meet his eyes.
“Mom?””
Elena closed her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Her voice broke.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stepped back.
A thousand questions appeared at once.
“What does that mean?””
Richard placed the letter down.
“It means your mother discovered something about you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“You deserve to know.””
“No.””
The refusal came quickly.
Because suddenly, he wasn’t ready.
For years, he had wanted answers.
But some answers were heavier than the questions.
Richard looked at him.
“Marcus, you have spent your whole life believing you knew who you were.””
A pause.
“But you don’t.””
Elena suddenly stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Richard looked at her.
“You know I’m right.””
“I said stop.””
“You hid it from him.””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was protecting him.””
Richard gave a bitter smile.
“From what?””
“From you.””
The words hit the room like a weapon.
Victor quietly watched.
Enjoying every second.
Marcus noticed.
“Why are you smiling?””
Victor looked at him.
“Because this is exactly what happened twenty years ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Victor walked closer.
“Your parents spent years blaming each other.””
He looked at Elena.
“She blamed him.””
Then at Richard.
“He blamed her.””
Then back at Marcus.
“But neither of them wanted to admit the real problem.””
“What problem?””
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“You.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Victor ignored him.
“Your parents built their entire lives around protecting you.””
Marcus looked confused.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Victor shook his head.
“Because nobody ever told you what you are.””
The room went quiet.
Elena whispered:
“Victor.””
But he continued.
“Your father’s company wasn’t built only on money.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“What is he talking about?””
Richard’s face changed.
For the first time, Marcus saw fear.
Real fear.
Not anger.
Not control.
Fear.
“Victor, leave.””
Victor laughed.
“You still think you’re in control.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You have no right.””
“No right?””
Victor stepped closer.
“After everything we built together?””
Marcus looked at his father.
“Together?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was all Marcus needed.
“You worked with him.””
Richard looked away.
“For a time.””
Marcus laughed softly.
“For a time?””
He shook his head.
“How many more things are you going to tell me only after I discover them?””
Richard looked hurt.
But Marcus didn’t care.
Not yet.
He was tired of defending people who kept hiding things from him.
“Tell me the truth.””
Richard looked at him.
“What truth?””
“Everything.””
A long silence.
Then Richard spoke.
“When you were born, your mother discovered something unusual about your medical records.””
Marcus frowned.
“My medical records?””
“Yes.””
“What was unusual?””
Richard looked at Elena.
She whispered:
“Your blood.””
Marcus felt confused.
“My blood?””
Richard nodded.
“When you were a baby, doctors made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Richard’s voice became lower.
“They recorded the wrong information.””
Marcus waited.
But neither of them continued.
Finally, he snapped.
“Stop talking like I’m a child.””
The anger surprised everyone.
“I am standing here after finding out my mother was alive, my father may have destroyed my family, and now you’re telling me something about my birth.””
He pointed at both of them.
“No more secrets.””
Elena began crying.
Richard looked down.
Then he said:
“Your mother discovered that you were not genetically related to me.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
The words meant nothing.
Then everything.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“She found out before you turned one year old.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
Elena stepped forward.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He backed away.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Elena couldn’t.
That was the answer.
Marcus felt like the floor had disappeared.
All his memories.
His childhood.
His name.
His family.
Everything shifted.
“You knew?””
He looked at his mother.
“You knew?””
Elena cried.
“Yes.””
“Who is my father?””
The question hung in the room.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard slowly looked at Victor.
Marcus followed his gaze.
And his heart stopped.
Because Victor Hale looked back at him with a strange sadness.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Like he had been waiting twenty years for this moment.
Marcus whispered:
“No.””
Victor said nothing.
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“Tell me.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“Your biological father…”
She looked at Victor.
“…is Victor Hale.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stared at the man he had just met.
The man who had been standing in the shadows of his family’s destruction.
The man who was connected to his father.
The man who had followed him.
Victor took a slow breath.
Then he said something Marcus never expected.
“I didn’t know you existed until the day your mother disappeared.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Victor looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“That’s the reason your mother ran.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“What happened that night?””
Victor’s expression changed.
For the first time, the powerful businessman looked afraid.
He looked at Elena.
Then at Richard.
Then back at Marcus.
“Your mother didn’t disappear because she betrayed your father.””
Marcus waited.
Victor’s voice dropped.
“She disappeared because she found out your father was planning to erase you from the Reed family forever.””
Richard’s face turned cold.
“Enough.””
Victor ignored him.
“And she made one mistake.””
Marcus stared.
“What mistake?””
Victor looked directly into his eyes.
“She trusted the wrong person to help her save you.””
A pause.
May you like
Then Victor said:
“That person was your father.””
