Chapter 7: The Grandfather Who Never Died
Marcus stared at the signature.
His hands were numb.
His mind refused to process what he was seeing.
*Authorized by: Thomas Reed.*
The name belonged to a dead man.
A man Marcus had only known through photographs.
A man his father always described as a brilliant businessman who died too young.
A man whose portrait hung in the Reed family mansion for decades.
A man who was supposed to be gone before Marcus ever took his first breath.
But the date beneath the signature proved something impossible.
Thomas Reed had approved the document three years after his reported death.
Marcus looked up slowly.
“This is fake.””
Nobody answered.
His voice grew louder.
“This is fake.””
Richard looked away.
Victor remained silent.
Elena looked like she had been waiting for this moment.
Marcus turned toward his father.
“You knew.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hit harder than he expected.
Not because it surprised him.
Because he was tired of being surprised.
Every truth came with another lie behind it.
Every answer opened another door.
“You knew my grandfather was alive?””
Richard looked at him.
“For a while.””
Marcus laughed.
A broken laugh.
“For a while?””
He held up the paper.
“You knew the man everyone told me was dead was alive, and you said nothing?””
Richard stepped closer.
“Marcus—”
“No.””
He moved back.
“Don’t.””
The word stopped Richard.
Marcus looked around the room.
“My whole life has been a story everyone else wrote.””
His eyes moved from his mother to his father.
“You all decided what I was allowed to know.””
Elena whispered:
“That’s not what we wanted.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then what did you want?””
She had no answer.
Because the result was the same.
He had lived inside a carefully built illusion.
Victor stepped forward.
“There’s something you need to understand.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I’m done hearing what I need to understand.””
Victor accepted the anger.
Maybe because he deserved it.
Maybe because he expected it.
“Your grandfather wasn’t just alive.””
Marcus said nothing.
“He was hiding.””
“From who?””
Victor glanced at Richard.
The answer was obvious.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Richard’s face tightened.
“Victor.””
Victor ignored him.
“Your grandfather discovered what Richard and I were building.””
Marcus looked at his father.
“You and Victor?””
Richard remained silent.
Victor nodded.
“Years ago, before you were born, your father and I created a private network.””
“What kind of network?””
“Information.””
Marcus frowned.
“That doesn’t sound illegal.””
Victor’s expression became serious.
“It wasn’t at first.””
The room became quiet.
“Then people realized information was more valuable than money.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“You collected secrets.””
“Yes.””
“About people.””
“Yes.””
“And you used them?””
Victor looked away.
“Sometimes.””
Marcus felt disgust rising.
“So everyone was just a piece on a board.””
“No.””
Victor looked at him.
“Not everyone.””
Marcus stared.
“Who wasn’t?””
Victor’s answer was immediate.
“You.””
The response unsettled him.
“Why?””
“Because your grandfather made sure you could never be controlled.””
Richard interrupted.
“That’s enough.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“No. Let him talk.””
Richard looked at his son.
For the first time, Marcus saw something close to fear in his father’s eyes.
Not fear of losing money.
Fear of losing him.
Victor continued.
“Thomas Reed discovered that the company had changed.””
Marcus listened.
“He realized Richard was no longer building an empire.””
Victor looked at Richard.
“He was building a cage.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
Victor stepped closer.
“Tell him about the trust.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“What trust?””
Richard didn’t respond.
Victor smiled sadly.
“There it is.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What trust?””
Richard finally spoke.
“When your grandfather died, he left you something.””
“I was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Richard hesitated.
“A controlling share.””
Marcus froze.
“In what?””
“Reed Global.””
The room became silent.
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“It was transferred into a protected trust.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“My grandfather left me the company?””
“Yes.””
“Then why do I own only part of it now?””
Richard said nothing.
Marcus felt cold.
“Dad.””
Richard looked down.
Victor answered.
“Because Richard changed the agreement.””
Marcus looked at him.
“When?””
“After your grandfather disappeared.””
The words hit him.
“Disappeared?””
Victor nodded.
“He didn’t die.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I found out years later.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know where he was.””
Marcus turned back.
“Where is he now?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was different.
Not uncertainty.
Fear.
Marcus noticed.
“You know.””
Richard looked away.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Where is my grandfather?””
Richard finally spoke.
“He’s dead.””
Victor immediately looked at him.
“That’s not what you told me.””
The room froze.
Marcus looked between them.
“What?””
Richard’s face changed.
Victor continued.
“Twenty years ago, you told me Thomas was alive.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“And twenty years ago, you believed many things that weren’t true.””
Victor stared at him.
“You lied to me?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Marcus felt anger building again.
“How many dead people in my family are actually alive?””
Nobody spoke.
Then suddenly, the lights went out.
The entire house went dark.
Elena gasped.
Marcus immediately turned.
“Mom?””
“I’m here.””
A sound came from outside.
A window breaking.
Richard moved instantly.
“Everyone down.””
Marcus froze.
Because the fear in his father’s voice was real.
Not manipulation.
Not performance.
Real fear.
A second later, a loud crash came from the back room.
Victor moved toward the hallway.
Richard grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Victor looked at him.
“You’re giving orders now?””
“Not here.””
Marcus stood between them.
“What is happening?””
Richard looked at him.
“Someone is trying to get what’s inside this house.””
Marcus looked toward the wooden box.
The documents.
The secrets.
Everything that had destroyed his family.
A shadow moved across the hallway.
Someone was inside.
Elena grabbed Marcus’s arm.
“Don’t go.””
But Marcus was tired of being protected.
Tired of being kept away.
He picked up the old metal fireplace tool.
“Who is here?””
No answer.
The footsteps came closer.
Slow.
Confident.
Like whoever entered wasn’t afraid of them.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
A voice Marcus didn’t recognize.
“Marcus Reed.””
Everyone froze.
The stranger stepped into the light from the window.
He was older.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But Marcus noticed something immediately.
Richard noticed too.
The way Richard stepped back.
The way Elena covered her mouth.
The way Victor went completely still.
The stranger looked directly at Marcus.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry it took this long.””
Marcus lowered the fireplace tool.
“Who are you?””
The man stared at him.
His eyes were filled with something Marcus had never seen before.
Regret.
“I’m the reason your mother had to run.””
Marcus’s heart pounded.
“Why?””
The man took a slow breath.
“Because I helped her hide you.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Hide me from who?””
The man looked at Richard.
Then at Victor.
Then back at Marcus.
“From everyone in this room.””
The air disappeared.
Elena whispered:
“No…”
The man stepped closer.
“My name is Thomas Reed.””
Marcus felt the world stop.
The grandfather who died before he was born.
The man whose signature appeared on impossible documents.
The man everyone had been hiding.
Was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Thomas looked at Marcus and said:
“You have spent your whole life believing you were a Reed.””
A pause.
Then his voice broke.
“But the truth is…”
He looked at Elena.
“You were never supposed to carry that name.””
Marcus stared.
“What are you saying?””
Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.
“Your real name…”
He stopped.
Like saying it out loud would change everything.
Then he whispered:
“Is not Marcus Reed.””
May you like
And behind him, Richard quietly locked the front door.
Because he knew the final secret was finally coming out.
