Chapter 11 - THE STAFF REMEMBERED CHARLOTTE DIFFERENTLYOne hotel employee recognized her from childhood.

Luis Ortega.
Bell captain.
He had worked at the Valle Grand for thirty-one years.
He remembered six-year-old Charlotte hiding under a lobby table during her father’s memorial reception.
He found her.
Gave her hot chocolate.
She spilled half of it.
When they met again, he smiled.
“You still hate whipped cream?”
Charlotte started crying.
Not because he knew her surname.
Because he remembered her as a child.
That was home in a way ownership documents never could be.
She asked:
“Did people know I existed?”
“Of course.”
“Then why did nobody talk about me?”
Luis shrugged.
“Your grandfather asked us to protect your privacy.”
That was different from erasure.

Not perfect.
But different.
