Chapter 6: The Choice He Never Made

Amy expected anger.

She expected excuses.

She expected Daniel to show up and explain everything away.

That was the version of him she knew.

The man who could turn any problem into a conversation about circumstances.

Stress.

Pressure.

Timing.

But he didn’t come.

Not that day.

Not the next.

And strangely, that hurt too.

Because part of her wondered if he had finally accepted losing her.

She sat in her temporary apartment, looking through baby clothes online.

She wasn’t buying anything.

Not yet.

She was still afraid to let herself believe this was real.

Her whole life had changed in one night.

A few weeks ago, she was a wife planning a surprise.

Now she was a woman learning how to build a future without depending on someone else.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

She froze.

For a moment, she thought it was Daniel.

But when she opened the door, Margaret stood there.

“I hope I’m not bothering you.””

Amy smiled faintly.

“You’re always welcome.””

Margaret stepped inside.

She carried a small bag.

“What’s that?””

“Something I should have given you sooner.””

Amy looked confused.

Margaret handed her the bag.

Inside was a small knitted blanket.

Amy touched the soft fabric.

“You made this?””

Margaret nodded.

“For Daniel when he was born.””

Amy looked up.

“Really?””

“I kept it all these years.””

The gesture nearly broke her.

Because Margaret wasn’t just Daniel’s mother.

She was becoming family to her child.

“I don’t know what happens next,” Amy whispered.

Margaret sat beside her.

“Neither do I.””

That honesty surprised Amy.

“But I know this,” Margaret continued.

“You deserve to be chosen every day. Not just when someone is afraid of losing you.””

Amy looked down.

“I still love him.””

“I know.””

“And I hate that I do.””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Love doesn’t make you weak.””

Amy looked toward the window.

“I just don’t know if love is enough.””

“No,” Margaret said gently.

“It isn’t.””

The answer surprised her.

“Love is where it starts. But trust, respect, and effort are what keep it alive.””

Amy nodded slowly.

That was exactly what she needed to hear.

Not a promise.

Not a fantasy.

Reality.

Later that evening, Daniel finally made a decision.

Not the kind he would have made before.

Not the kind where he tried to fix everything immediately.

He drove to the hotel where Amy was staying.

But he didn’t go upstairs.

He didn’t demand to see her.

He didn’t call repeatedly.

Instead, he sat in the lobby and waited.

For three hours.

When Margaret arrived to visit Amy, she saw him.

“You’re still here?””

Daniel stood.

“Yes.””

“She may not see you.””

“I know.””

“You may have to wait.””

“I know.””

Margaret studied him.

“You’re different.””

Daniel looked down.

“I should have been different before.””

For once, he wasn’t trying to impress anyone.

No charm.

No perfect words.

Just regret.

Margaret nodded toward the elevator.

“I’ll tell her you’re here.””

Daniel looked up.

“Thank you.””

But before she walked away, she stopped.

“Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“If she gives you another chance, don’t waste it.””

He nodded.

“I won’t.””

Upstairs, Amy listened as Margaret told her.

Daniel is here.

Waiting.

Amy closed her eyes.

A part of her wanted to run downstairs.

A part of her wanted to ask why it took losing her for him to finally see her.

But another part remembered the man she married.

The man who loved her once.

The man who might still be there beneath all the mistakes.

She looked down at her stomach.

Then toward the door.

May you like

For the first time since the gala, she wondered if goodbye had truly been the end.

Or if it was the beginning of something neither of them expected.
