Chapter 9: The Secret Between Them
Amy sat across from Daniel and waited.
She didn’t interrupt.
She didn’t raise her voice.
That almost made it worse.
Because Daniel knew Amy well enough to understand that her silence was not calm.
It was disappointment.
The kind that came after someone had already spent too much time hurting.
“How long?”” she asked.
Daniel looked down.
“Before the gala?””
“Yes.””
He took a slow breath.
“About three months.””
Amy stared at him.
Three months.
The number felt heavier than she expected.
Because three months meant it wasn’t an accident.
It meant choices.
Three months of conversations she didn’t know about.
Three months of moments where Daniel came home and kissed her forehead while carrying a secret.
Three months where she believed they were struggling through a difficult season together while he was building another connection outside their marriage.
“Were you seeing her?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Amy noticed.
Daniel continued.
“Not physically. No.””
“But emotionally?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Amy looked away.
The pain wasn’t as sharp as it had been at the gala.
It was different now.
Colder.
More controlled.
Because the woman who left that ballroom was shattered.
The woman sitting here had survived.
“Tell me everything,” she said.
Daniel nodded.
He knew there was no hiding anymore.
“Vanessa worked with one of our partner companies. We met during negotiations.””
Amy listened.
“At first it was just conversations. Business. Then we started talking more.””
“About what?””
Daniel swallowed.
“About my frustrations.””
Amy gave a small, humorless laugh.
“Your frustrations.””
“I know how that sounds.””
“Do you?””
Her voice remained quiet.
“That means you gave another woman the parts of yourself you stopped sharing with me.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to deny it.
But he couldn’t.
Because that was exactly what happened.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
Amy looked at him.
“And I need you to understand something. The fact that you didn’t sleep with her doesn’t make it harmless.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I understand that now.””
“No. You understand it now because you almost lost me.””
The words landed.
Because they were true.
Daniel had learned the lesson only after the consequence arrived.
Amy stood and walked toward the window.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Daniel said something unexpected.
“There’s something else.””
She closed her eyes.
Of course there was.
“Vanessa recorded some of our conversations.””
Amy turned.
“What?””
“She told me she kept them because she thought we were going somewhere.””
Amy felt her stomach tighten.
“Why?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was careless.””
That was the word.
Not unlucky.
Not confused.
Careless.
“I let someone believe there was a future between us when I had no intention of leaving my marriage.””
Amy shook her head.
“You let her believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because I liked feeling wanted.””
The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.
Amy stared at him.
At least now she was seeing the truth.
Not the version Daniel wanted her to see.
The real one.
“I appreciate you telling me.””
Daniel looked up, surprised.
“But?””
“But I don’t know what to do with it.””
That was the hardest truth.
Forgiveness wasn’t a switch.
Trust wasn’t rebuilt because someone finally admitted they were wrong.
It took time.
It took proof.
It took consistency.
The meeting with Vanessa happened two days later.
Amy almost canceled.
Almost.
But she decided she needed to hear the truth directly.
They met at a quiet café away from the places where Manhattan’s wealthy circles gathered.
Vanessa arrived first.
She looked exactly as she always had.
Elegant.
Confident.
Controlled.
But Amy noticed something beneath the confidence.
Fear.
“You came,” Vanessa said.
Amy sat down.
“You asked me to.””
Vanessa studied her.
“I expected you to hate me.””
Amy looked at her calmly.
“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.””
That answer seemed to surprise Vanessa.
“I thought Daniel told you everything.””
“He didn’t.””
Vanessa looked away.
A small smile appeared.
“Of course he didn’t.””
Amy felt irritation rise.
Not because Vanessa was wrong.
Because she sounded satisfied.
“What do you want?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I want people to know I wasn’t imagining things.””
Amy said nothing.
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
Then stopped.
Amy noticed.
“What?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“You need to understand something.””
“I’m listening.””
“Daniel wasn’t just unhappy. He was preparing to leave.””
Amy felt the words hit her.
But she didn’t react.
Because she had learned something important.
Words were not proof.
“Did he tell you that?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Not exactly.””
Amy leaned back.
“Then no. He wasn’t.””
Vanessa frowned.
“You’re defending him?””
“No.””
Amy held her gaze.
“I’m separating facts from feelings.””
For the first time, Vanessa seemed unsure.
Because Amy wasn’t the broken woman she expected.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t desperate.
She was clear.
Vanessa finally admitted the truth.
“Daniel never promised me a relationship.””
Amy waited.
“He made me feel like there could be one.””
That was different.
And somehow, it mattered.
Because Amy realized Vanessa had also been caught in Daniel’s selfishness.
Not innocent.
But not the villain she had imagined either.
“What are you going to do with those recordings?”” Amy asked.
Vanessa looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Amy stood.
“Then figure it out.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“That’s it?””
Amy nodded.
“I’m done fighting for someone who should have chosen me without being forced.””
She walked away.
And for the first time, Vanessa watched Amy leave without feeling victorious.
May you like
She felt something else.
Respect.
