Chapter 12: My Sister's Final Betrayal

I couldn't speak.

Stephanie had changed the hospital records.

The same sister who had stolen Nathan.

The same sister who had helped Richard access our mother's finances.

The same sister who had spent the funeral displaying a diamond ring while our mother lay in her coffin.

But this was different.

She had apparently tampered with the truth about my birth.

"You're certain?"" I asked.

The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.

"My name is Helen Collins. I was Margaret's sister. I kept in touch with Eleanor for years.""

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""

"Because Eleanor begged me not to.""

I looked at Alexander.

He had stopped the car.

Helen continued.

"Your mother called me three days before she died. She said Stephanie had found the original hospital file and changed the identification record.""

"Why would Stephanie do that?""

"Because Richard promised her money.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"How much?""

"Two million dollars.""

The exact amount in the agreement Richard had prepared.

I closed my eyes.

"Did Mom know?""

"Yes. She confronted Stephanie.""

"What did Stephanie say?""

Helen's voice cracked.

"She told Eleanor that she was only correcting a mistake.""

I stared through the windshield.

"Did Mom believe her?""

"No. Your mother knew the truth.""

"What truth?""

Helen hesitated.

Then she said:

"Stephanie wasn't trying to make you Richard's daughter. She was trying to make you someone else's.""

I looked at Alexander.

"What does that mean?""

Helen answered.

"She was trying to replace your birth identity with that of another baby.""

The silence inside the car became unbearable.

"Why?""

"Because the Collins trust belongs to Claire Elizabeth Collins. Richard needed a way to challenge your identity. If he could convince the court that you weren't the same child Margaret gave birth to, he could delay the trust indefinitely.""

I swallowed.

"So Stephanie helped him create a false identity.""

"Yes.""

I looked down at my hands.

"Why would she do that to me?""

Helen didn't answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

"Because Richard told her she wasn't Eleanor's biological daughter either.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He convinced Stephanie that she had been adopted under false circumstances. He told her that if she helped him, he would reveal her real family.""

I looked toward Alexander.

The situation was becoming more complicated by the minute.

"Did Mom know who Stephanie's biological father was?""

Helen sighed.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Before she could answer, the call disconnected.

I tried calling back.

The number was unavailable.

Alexander reached for my hand.

"We need to get to Mr. Bennett.""

At the attorney's office, Stephanie was waiting.

She stood as soon as we entered.

"Claire, thank God.""

I stopped in the doorway.

"Did you change the hospital records?""

Her expression collapsed.

"What?""

"Did you sign a false identification document six months ago?""

She looked at Alexander.

Then at me.

"Who told you that?""

I stepped closer.

"Answer the question.""

Stephanie began shaking her head.

"I didn't know what I was doing.""

"That's not an answer.""

"I was trying to help Dad.""

I stared at her.

"Richard isn't even our father.""

She flinched.

"I know.""

"Then why did you do it?""

She wiped her face.

"Because he told me he could find my real family.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You helped him steal from Mom because you wanted to know who your biological father was?""

"Yes!""

The word came out like a scream.

Stephanie grabbed the edge of the table.

"Do you know what it's like to grow up feeling unwanted? Mom always talked about how special you were. She kept your photographs everywhere.

Your school awards. Your birthday cards. Your drawings.""

I stared at her.

"She did the same for you.""

"No, she didn't!""

"Stephanie—"

"You were the perfect daughter!""

I felt my anger rise.

"Mom spent her final months asking why you never visited.""

Stephanie began crying.

"And I was terrified!""

"Of what?""

"That I wasn't really her daughter.""

The room fell silent.

For a moment, I saw the little girl who had once climbed into my bed after a nightmare.

The little girl who had held my hand when our father supposedly died.

But then I remembered the forged signatures.

The stolen money.

The hospital documents.

"Did you know Mom was sick when you changed those records?""

Stephanie nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know she was too weak to defend herself?""

She lowered her head.

"Yes.""

I looked away.

"Then you made your choice.""

Mr. Bennett entered the room carrying a folder.

"There's something everyone needs to see.""

He placed a document on the table.

It was a hospital record from the night Stephanie was born.

Unlike my file, this one had never been altered.

The mother was listed as Eleanor Carter.

The father was listed as Richard Carter.

But beneath the father's name, someone had written a note.

Paternity unconfirmed. Husband unavailable for testing.

I looked at Stephanie.

"Mom didn't know?""

Mr. Bennett shook his head.

"Your mother knew Richard wasn't your biological father. But she never disclosed the identity of your biological father.""

Stephanie sat down.

"Why would she hide that?""

The attorney opened a second envelope.

"Because the man involved was married.""

He placed a photograph on the table.

A young man stood beside Eleanor Carter.

He had dark hair, a familiar smile, and the same small indentation in his chin that Stephanie had.

I looked at Alexander.

He recognized him too.

"That's Daniel Whitmore.""

Stephanie stared at the photograph.

"No.""

Mr. Bennett nodded.

"According to the original records, Daniel Whitmore was involved with both Margaret Collins and Eleanor Carter.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Alexander picked up the photograph.

His face was pale.

Mr. Bennett continued.

"Margaret gave birth to Claire. Eleanor gave birth to Stephanie. Daniel was the biological father of both children.""

Stephanie covered her mouth.

I stared at the document.

That meant Alexander and I shared the same biological father.

But we weren't related through the same mother?

We were still half-siblings.

And Stephanie was my full biological sister through our shared father, although we had been raised as sisters in the same family.

I looked at her.

"Did you know?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Mr. Bennett placed a final document on the table.

It was a letter from Eleanor.

My girls,

There is something I never told you.

You were both born from the same man, but neither of you was born into the life you deserved.

Daniel loved Margaret. He also loved me. I made choices I cannot undo.

When Margaret died, I promised to raise Claire. When Daniel died, I promised to protect Stephanie.

I never wanted either of you to feel that one was more wanted than the other.

I stopped reading.

The next paragraph was addressed specifically to Stephanie.

Stephanie, if you are reading this, please understand that I never loved you less because I knew the truth.

My sister began sobbing.

I continued.

Your biological father was Daniel Whitmore.

Your mother was me.

The man who raised you was Richard only because he agreed to pretend.

Stephanie shook her head violently.

"No. No, that's not true.""

Mr. Bennett placed a final sheet beside the letter.

A DNA test.

The results confirmed the relationship.

Daniel Whitmore was Stephanie's biological father.

Richard Carter had never been her father.

Stephanie looked at me.

For the first time, there was no jealousy in her eyes.

Only devastation.

"Claire, I didn't know.""

I believed her.

But believing her didn't undo what she had done.

Alexander picked up the letter.

"There is one final paragraph.""

He read it aloud.

If Richard returns, do not trust his promises. He knows what happened to Daniel. He knows why the original records were changed. And he knows that the person who caused the accident that killed your father was never brought to justice.

I stared at the page.

Daniel hadn't simply died in an accident.

Someone had killed him.

And Richard knew who.

Before anyone could speak, the receptionist rushed into the room.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry to interrupt.""

The attorney looked up.

"What is it?""

She held out a phone.

"There's a live news report about the Whitmore family.""

Alexander took the phone.

A reporter was standing outside a courthouse.

Behind her was Richard Carter.

He was holding a folder and speaking directly to the cameras.

The headline appeared beneath him:

*WHITMORE HEIR ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD AS FAMILY TRUST BATTLE EXPLODES.*

Then Richard looked directly into the camera.

"My daughter Claire has been manipulated by Alexander Whitmore. I have evidence that he knew about her identity before their marriage.""

I turned toward my husband.

Alexander's face had gone completely still.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

If you want to know who killed Daniel Whitmore, ask your husband what happened the night his father died.

A second message followed.

He was there.

I slowly looked at Alexander.

He stared at the screen.

Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said:

"Claire, there's something I never told you about that night.""

May you like

And the look in his eyes told me that the next secret wouldn't belong to my sister.

It would belong to the man I had married.
