Chapter 14: The Original Birth Record

Stephanie held the key in her palm.

"I didn't know this was here.""

I looked at the ring.

"Richard knew.""

She nodded.

"That's why he stole it.""

Alexander took the folded paper.

It contained an address and a handwritten instruction.

*Storage room 214. St. Catherine's Hospital.

Ask for the Collins file. Trust no one who claims to represent the Whitmore family.*

Mr. Bennett read it twice.

"St. Catherine's closed its maternity department years ago.""

"Does the building still exist?"" I asked.

"Yes. The hospital was converted into a medical records center.""

The investigator checked his phone.

"I can arrange access.""

Stephanie looked at me.

"Claire, I need to tell you something.""

I waited.

"When Mom gave me this ring, she said it was the only thing she could trust me with. I thought she meant it was valuable.""

Her voice broke.

"She knew I had been helping Richard.""

"Then why give it to you?""

"She said she still believed there was a good person inside me.""

I looked away.

I wasn't ready to forgive her.

But I wasn't ready to abandon her either.

"Let's find out what she was protecting.""

The records center was almost empty when we arrived.

A security officer escorted us to the second floor.

Storage room 214 was at the end of a narrow corridor.

The brass key fit the lock.

Inside were several metal cabinets and boxes marked with dates.

One cabinet had a label:

*COLLINS—CARTER—WHITMORE.*

My hands trembled.

Alexander opened it.

There were three folders.

One contained Margaret Collins's medical records.

Another contained Eleanor Carter's delivery records.

The third was marked with both my name and Stephanie's.

Mr. Bennett carefully opened it.

Inside was the original birth register.

The names were clear.

Margaret Collins had given birth to a girl at 2:14 a.m.

Eleanor Carter had given birth to a girl at 2:25 a.m.

Both babies had been delivered at St. Catherine's Hospital.

The next page contained the original identification numbers.

The number beside Margaret's daughter matched my hospital bracelet.

The number beside Eleanor's daughter matched Stephanie's.

I looked at my sister.

"That's it.""

She nodded slowly.

The records confirmed what Eleanor's letter had said.

Margaret was my biological mother.

Eleanor was Stephanie's biological mother.

Daniel Whitmore was listed as the father on both confidential records.

But there was something else.

A handwritten notation appeared beneath the two entries.

Identity verification requested by R. Carter. Nursery records temporarily removed.

My heart began pounding.

"Richard was involved from the beginning.""

Mr. Bennett examined the document.

"Yes. But this note alone doesn't prove he changed anything.""

Alexander turned the page.

A separate report had been attached.

It was dated three days after our births.

Original identification bands recovered. No evidence of infant substitution. Records restored under supervision of Dr. Evelyn Brooks.

I felt a wave of relief.

"Dr. Brooks knew.""

"Apparently," Mr. Bennett said.

Then Stephanie pointed to the bottom of the report.

There was another signature.

Paul Mercer.

The administrator who had died three weeks earlier.

Beside his signature was a note:

Correction approved under instruction from Eleanor Carter.

I stared.

"Mom authorized the correction?""

Mr. Bennett frowned.

"It appears so.""

I turned the page.

A letter had been stapled to the back.

It was from Eleanor to Margaret.

I have done what you asked. Claire will be raised with love, and Stephanie will never know that Daniel was her father unless she chooses to search for him.

Richard has threatened to expose us. He says he can make the girls believe they were exchanged.

I will not let him use our children against each other.

I felt tears slide down my face.

Our mother had spent decades protecting both of us.

But why had she needed to correct the records?

The answer appeared in the final document.

It was a sworn statement from Dr. Evelyn Brooks.

She explained that Richard had entered the nursery after Eleanor's delivery.

He had attempted to remove the identification bands from both newborns.

A nurse had stopped him.

Richard claimed he was trying to protect his family from a scandal.

But he had been carrying a document that would have falsely identified Claire as Eleanor's biological child and Stephanie as Margaret's.

The hospital administrator had initially agreed to alter the records.

Then Eleanor discovered the plan.

She demanded the original records be restored.

The doctor had signed the statement to preserve the truth.

I sat down.

"Richard wanted to switch us.""

Stephanie covered her mouth.

"Why?""

Mr. Bennett answered.

"Because Margaret's trust named Claire Elizabeth Collins as its sole beneficiary. If he could convince the court that Claire was not the child Margaret gave birth to, he could challenge the inheritance.""

"And Stephanie?"" I asked.

"She would have become the apparent beneficiary of the Collins family identity, depending on how the forged documents were presented. Richard could then claim control through his guardianship and financial arrangements.""

Alexander examined the pages.

"He wasn't trying to give Stephanie her rightful identity. He was trying to manufacture one.""

I looked at my sister.

She was crying silently.

"Mom knew he would keep trying," I whispered.

Then I noticed a final envelope at the bottom of the folder.

It was addressed to me.

My name was written in Eleanor's familiar handwriting.

I opened it.

My darling Claire,

If you have found this, then Richard has finally pushed you far enough to uncover what I spent my life protecting.

I need you to understand something.

I did not keep the truth from you because I was ashamed of you. I kept it because Margaret trusted me with her greatest treasure, and because I had already learned what Richard could do to people he wanted to control.

Daniel was your father. He was also Stephanie's father.

He loved both girls, but he was too weak to stand against the consequences of his choices. Margaret and I made a promise to protect you from the shame and greed of adults.

I raised you as my daughter because you were my daughter in every way that mattered.

I raised Stephanie the same way.

Neither of you was ever a mistake.

I stopped reading.

Stephanie reached for my hand.

I let her take it.

The letter continued.

There is one more truth.

Richard did not kill Daniel alone.

I looked up.

Alexander stepped closer.

I continued reading.

The man who helped him was someone Daniel trusted. Someone who knew about the warehouse meeting and the evidence he carried.

A name had been written on a separate sheet.

I unfolded it.

*ROBERT WHITMORE.*

Alexander staggered backward.

"No.""

The room fell silent.

"My grandfather?""

Mr. Bennett took the paper.

"This could be an accusation, not proof.""

Alexander stared at the name.

"He raised me. He protected me.""

I looked at him.

"Maybe he protected you from the truth.""

The investigator quietly closed the cabinet.

"There's another document.""

He handed us a copy of a financial transfer.

It showed that three days after Daniel's death, Robert Whitmore transferred five million dollars into an offshore account.

The account belonged to a company controlled by Richard Carter.

Alexander stared at the amount.

"Grandfather paid him.""

Mr. Bennett examined the transaction.

"It certainly appears that way.""

I looked at the original letter again.

My mother had known.

She had known that Richard and Robert were connected to Daniel's death.

But there was a final line beneath her signature.

The person who knows why Robert paid Richard is still alive. Find the woman who witnessed the meeting.

I looked at Alexander.

"Who witnessed it?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Then Stephanie noticed a name printed on the bank transfer.

The account authorization had been signed by a woman.

Not Richard.

Not Robert.

*Victoria Whitmore.*

We called Victoria immediately.

She refused to answer.

Then a message arrived from her.

Come alone. I will tell you what happened to Daniel.

Alexander read it.

"I'm coming with you.""

The next message appeared.

If Alexander comes, I will say nothing.

I looked at him.

"She's afraid of you.""

"Or she's trying to separate us.""

I stared at the screen.

A third message appeared.

Claire, your husband isn't the only Whitmore who has been lying.

Then came an address.

A small house near the Connecticut coast.

May you like

And one final sentence.

Your mother was right. Robert didn't order Daniel's death. I did.
