Chapter 8: The House That Remembered Everything

The Carter estate looked like a place the world had forgotten.

The iron gates stood crooked beneath a blanket of vines.

The stone pathway was cracked.

The windows of the old mansion reflected nothing but darkness.

From the outside, it looked abandoned.

Dead.

But as I stood there holding the gold ring my mother left me, I knew better.

Places didn’t hold secrets unless someone worked very hard to keep them.

The car engine shut off behind us.

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, we just stared.

Jalen sat beside me, silent.

Marcus stood near the front of the car.

Rochelle remained in the back seat.

She had barely spoken during the entire drive.

That scared me more than anything.

Rochelle Carter was not a woman who ran out of words.

She was a woman who used words like weapons.

But now?

She was afraid of a house.

I stepped out.

The cold air hit my face.

Jalen followed immediately.

“Maya, wait.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked at the mansion.

Then back at me.

“I know you’re angry.””

I didn’t answer.

“But whatever we find in there…”

He paused.

“I need you to know something.””

I waited.

He took a breath.

“I didn’t know.””

The pain in his voice was real.

And somehow, that made it harder.

Because I believed him.

I knew Jalen.

I knew his heart.

But knowing he was innocent didn’t erase the fact that his family had been connected to my pain for years.

“I know.””

His expression changed slightly.

“You do?””

I nodded.

“I know you didn’t choose this.””

I looked at the mansion.

“But I don’t know what this changes.””

Jalen lowered his eyes.

“I don’t either.””

That honesty meant more than a promise.

Because tonight, promises had become dangerous.

We walked toward the entrance.

Marcus stayed close.

Rochelle finally stepped out of the car.

“Wait.””

I turned.

She looked at the house.

Then at me.

“When we go inside, you need to understand something.””

I almost smiled.

“Another warning?””

She accepted that.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

She continued.

“Your mother didn’t hate me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Rochelle swallowed.

“She was angry. She was hurt. But she never hated me.””

The wind moved through the trees.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw the person I failed.””

That was the closest thing to an apology she had given me.

But I wasn’t ready to accept it.

Not yet.

I turned away.

“Open the door.””

Rochelle reached into her purse.

She pulled out an old key.

My stomach tightened.

“You had the key?””

She looked at it.

“I never stopped having it.””

The lock was covered in rust.

But the key turned easily.

Too easily.

The door opened.

The inside of the mansion smelled like dust and old wood.

But underneath that was something else.

A familiar scent.

Lavender.

My mother’s favorite.

I stopped.

Jalen noticed.

“What?””

I looked around.

“She was here.””

Marcus went quiet.

“How do you know?””

I touched the wooden railing.

“Because she always wore that perfume.””

Nobody spoke.

We stepped inside.

The house was frozen in time.

Old furniture covered with sheets.

Family portraits hanging on the walls.

A grand staircase leading to rooms nobody had entered in years.

But the strangest thing was the photographs.

There were hundreds.

Carter family memories.

Birthdays.

Holidays.

Business celebrations.

And hidden among them…

My mother.

I walked closer.

There she was.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside Rochelle.

They weren’t enemies.

They looked like sisters.

I touched the glass.

“She loved you.””

Rochelle stood behind me.

“I loved her too.””

I turned.

“Then why?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Because loving someone doesn’t mean you never hurt them.””

That answer stayed with me.

Because it was probably true.

People could love you and still destroy pieces of you.

Marcus walked toward the fireplace.

“Your mother used to hide things here.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“She was always careful.””

He touched the stone.

“She knew people were watching.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he pressed a small section of the fireplace.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a folder.

Nobody breathed.

Marcus pulled it out.

The papers inside were old.

Legal documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

And a letter.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My mother’s handwriting.

I reached for it.

This time nobody stopped me.

The letter began:

*My dear Maya,*

I sat down.

My knees suddenly felt weak.

*If you are reading this, then you have met the people I spent my life trying to protect you from.*

I looked at Rochelle.

She closed her eyes.

The letter continued.

*But I need you to understand something first. Not everyone who hurt me was my enemy.*

My hands trembled.

*And not everyone who loved me was able to save me.*

The words blurred.

I continued reading.

*The night you were born changed everything. Marcus discovered that someone inside his company was stealing money. When he tried to expose them, they planned to destroy him.*

I looked at Marcus.

He stared at the floor.

*I found evidence that could have sent powerful people to prison. I thought the truth would protect us. I was wrong.*

A chill moved through me.

*The person who came after us wasn’t interested in money. They were interested in control.*

I turned the page.

Then stopped.

Because the next sentence made my entire body freeze.

*The person behind everything was not Rochelle.*

Everyone became silent.

Rochelle looked at me.

I kept reading.

*Rochelle made terrible choices, but she was not the person who betrayed me. She was trying to fix what she helped break.*

My eyes lifted.

Rochelle was crying silently.

I looked back at the letter.

*The person you should fear is the one who always told you they were protecting you.*

The words felt familiar.

The exact warning.

The exact phrase.

But this time, it came from my mother.

I turned the page.

The final part of the letter was shorter.

Messier.

Like she wrote it quickly.

*Maya, if Angela is still in your life, do not trust her.*

My heart stopped.

Jalen noticed.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

I handed him the letter.

He read the line.

His face changed.

Marcus took the paper.

Rochelle whispered:

“Angela.””

The name sounded like a memory she hated.

“You knew?””

Rochelle nodded slowly.

“She was there.””

My voice sharpened.

“There that night?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

They were afraid.

Marcus looked through the documents.

Then suddenly stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He pulled out a photograph.

A recent one.

Not old.

Not from sixteen years ago.

Recent.

It showed Angela standing outside this exact mansion.

Yesterday’s date was written on the back.

Jalen stepped closer.

“She came here?””

Marcus nodded.

Rochelle looked terrified.

“She’s looking for something.””

I looked at the hidden compartment.

“The documents.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the folder.

“She already has them.””

The room went silent.

“Then what is she looking for?””

Marcus slowly turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A message.

Not from my mother.

From Angela.

Three words.

*“Find the daughter.””*

My blood ran cold.

Because Angela wasn’t searching for the documents.

She wasn’t searching for the truth.

She was searching for me.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Jalen immediately grabbed my hand.

Someone was inside.

But that was impossible.

We had just entered.

The hallway above us was dark.

Then a voice came from the second floor.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Maya…”

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it every week for five years.

Angela.

She slowly appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

And in her hand…

Was the journal she had stolen from the storage room.

“I was hoping you would never find this place.””

Nobody moved.

I stared at the woman who raised me.

The woman who knew my mother.

The woman who knew every secret.

“Why?””

My voice broke.

“Why did you lie to me?””

Angela looked down at the journal.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Because your mother asked me to.””

The room went silent.

Rochelle shook her head.

“No.””

Angela looked at her.

“Yes.””

Then she looked at me.

“She didn’t disappear because she was running from the truth, Maya.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“She disappeared because she was trying to keep you alive.””

I stepped forward.

“Alive from who?””

Angela looked around the room.

At Marcus.

At Rochelle.

At Jalen.

Then back at me.

And the answer she gave was the one thing none of us expected.

“From yourself.””

I froze.

“What?””

Angela opened the journal.

She turned to the final page.

And whispered:

“Your mother found out the truth about what happened the night you were born.””

May you like

Her voice shook.

“And the truth was about you.””
