Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Took To Her Grave

The words hung in the air.

*The truth was about you.*

I stared at Angela.

Waiting for her to explain.

Waiting for someone to tell me this was another misunderstanding.

Another secret with another hidden reason.

But nobody spoke.

Not Angela.

Not Rochelle.

Not Marcus.

Not Jalen.

And that silence terrified me.

Because silence was where every lie in my life had lived.

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Angela tightened her grip on the journal.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I am done hearing half of the truth.””

The mansion seemed to grow colder around us.

“I want everything.””

Angela looked down.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

She closed her eyes.

And for a moment, she looked exactly like the woman who held my hand when I was a child.

The woman who helped me with homework.

The woman who cried at my graduation.

The woman who hugged me after my first heartbreak.

That was the cruelest part.

The people who hurt you the most are often the people you trusted enough to let close.

Angela slowly walked down the stairs.

She placed the journal on the table.

“You deserve to know.””

Rochelle shook her head.

“Angela, don’t.””

Angela looked at her.

“You had years to tell her.””

Rochelle looked away.

Angela opened the journal.

“Your mother wrote this after the accident.””

I swallowed.

“The accident where she disappeared?””

Angela nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why did Elena write that it was about Maya?””

Angela looked at him.

“Because it was.””

My heart raced.

“What happened?””

Angela touched the journal.

“Before Maya was born, Marcus discovered someone inside his company was using his name to move illegal money.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I knew someone was stealing.””

Angela continued.

“But he didn’t know how far it went.””

She looked at Rochelle.

“Your family was being used.””

Rochelle’s face tightened.

“Not my whole family.””

Angela didn’t argue.

She just looked at her.

“Victoria knew.””

Everyone went still.

Jalen whispered:

“My aunt?””

Angela nodded.

“She was the one who discovered Marcus’s investigation.””

My stomach tightened.

“So Victoria caused the accident?””

Angela looked at me.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“No?””

“No.””

She took a breath.

“The accident was caused by someone trying to scare Marcus into stopping.””

She looked at the floor.

“But they didn’t know Elena was in the car.””

My eyes filled.

My mother.

Caught in someone else’s war.

“But why me?””

Angela looked at the ring.

“Because of what your mother discovered after.””

She picked it up.

The gold ring reflected the light.

“Your mother realized the person behind everything wasn’t just after money.””

She turned the ring over.

“They were after an inheritance.””

Marcus frowned.

“An inheritance?””

Angela nodded.

“Your grandmother’s estate.””

I looked confused.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Angela looked at me.

“Everything.””

She placed the ring in my hand.

“Your mother found out that Marcus’s family had a hidden trust.””

Marcus’s eyes widened.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Angela nodded.

“A trust created generations ago.””

Jalen looked between them.

“What kind of trust?””

Angela answered quietly.

“One that could only be transferred to someone born from two specific family lines.””

The room became silent.

I felt something inside me shift.

“No.””

Angela looked at me sadly.

“Yes, Maya.””

I shook my head.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

She pointed toward the ring.

“Your grandmother created a condition. If the Carter family and Thompson family ever reunited through their children, the trust would belong to the next generation.””

Jalen stared.

“The next generation?””

Angela nodded.

“Maya.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“You’re saying I’m connected to some family trust?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Jalen.

“And him?””

Angela nodded.

“That’s why Victoria was afraid.””

Jalen’s expression changed.

“Because Maya and I were together?””

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Wait.””

His voice was sharp.

“You’re saying someone tried to stop this before it happened?””

Angela looked at him.

“Exactly.””

A horrible realization crossed his face.

“Oh my God.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Your relationship.””

He swallowed.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””

The words hurt.

Even though I knew what he meant.

Someone had been afraid of us.

Not because of love.

Because of what our love represented.

Angela continued.

“Your mother found documents proving someone had been manipulating both families for years.””

“Who?””

Angela looked toward the staircase.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Toward the mansion.

Toward the place where generations of Carter family secrets had been hidden.

“Victoria.””

Jalen closed his eyes.

“No.””

Angela looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

He stepped back.

“My aunt?””

“She believed the trust belonged to her family alone.””

Rochelle whispered:

“She always hated feeling powerless.””

Angela nodded.

“She thought removing Maya from the picture would protect everything.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted to hurt me?””

Angela shook her head.

“She wanted to control your future.””

That almost sounded worse.

Because it meant I wasn’t a person to her.

I was a problem.

A piece on a board.

“What did my mother do?””

Angela’s expression softened.

“She hid you.””

A tear slipped down my face.

“My whole life?””

“Yes.””

“She left everything?””

“No.””

Angela looked at me.

“She left because she knew she was being watched.””

I remembered my childhood.

The small apartment.

The late nights.

My mother always checking the locks.

Always looking over her shoulder.

I thought she was anxious.

I thought life had simply been hard.

But she had been afraid.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Angela looked at the journal.

“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Normal?””

I looked around the mansion.

“At what point was any of this normal?””

Nobody answered.

Then Jalen stepped forward.

“What about us?””

Angela looked at him.

“What about you?””

He swallowed.

“Was our relationship just an accident?””

Angela’s expression softened.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother believed something.””

“What?””

“That love was the one thing nobody could control.””

The words broke through me.

Because despite everything…

Despite every secret…

Despite every lie…

My feelings for Jalen had always been real.

Angela opened the journal.

“There’s one more thing.””

Everyone looked at her.

She turned to the final page.

“This is what your mother wanted Maya to read when she was ready.””

My hands shook.

I took the journal.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

*Maya,*

I stopped breathing.

*If you are reading this, then you finally know the truth.*

My eyes blurred.

*I’m sorry I made you carry questions I should have answered. But I need you to understand something.*

I continued.

*I did not leave because I stopped loving you. I left because I loved you more than I loved my own happiness.*

A tear fell onto the page.

*The person who tried to control your life believed they could decide your future. They were wrong.*

The next line made my heart stop.

*Because the greatest thing I ever did was not protecting the trust. It was protecting the person who would inherit it.*

I turned the page.

The last words were short.

*You were never the key to the trust, Maya.*

A pause.

*You were the reason it existed.*

I looked up.

Nobody spoke.

Then the front doors of the mansion slammed open.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

A woman.

Older.

Calm.

Not afraid.

She looked directly at me.

Angela stepped backward.

“No.””

Rochelle whispered:

“Victoria.””

Victoria Carter smiled faintly.

After sixteen years of secrets, she had finally stopped hiding.

“I was wondering when you would find this place.””

Jalen moved toward her.

“Aunt Victoria…”

She ignored him.

Her eyes stayed on me.

“Maya Thompson.””

My blood ran cold.

Because she didn’t look surprised to see me.

She looked like she had been waiting.

“I owe you an explanation.””

I tightened my grip on the journal.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“You owe my mother one.””

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

Then she reached into her coat.

She pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

“The truth is…”

She looked at Jalen.

“…your mother has been lying to you.””

Everyone froze.

Victoria looked at me.

“And so has Angela.””

The room went silent.

Because after everything I had learned…

May you like

After everything I thought I understood…

The woman who caused the nightmare had just claimed she was the only one telling the truth.
