Chapter 7: The Box Beneath the City

Nobody moved.

Richard Hale stood in the middle of the wedding ballroom like he belonged there.

Like the broken promises.

The hidden secrets.

The thirty years of pain.

All of it was simply another room he had walked into.

Daniel hated how calm he looked.

That calm was worse than anger.

Anger meant someone was losing control.

Richard looked completely in control.

“You came here to ruin my life,” Daniel said.

Richard tilted his head.

“No.””

His answer was almost gentle.

“I came here because your life was already built on a lie.””

Daniel tightened his grip around the old ring.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Richard glanced at it.

“You don’t know what that ring represents.””

“Then tell me.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“You really are your father’s son.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to him.””

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You spent thirty years hiding from him, and now you want to act like his protector?””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“I protected him from you.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Did you?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

The question hurt because part of him wondered the same thing.

Marcus noticed.

And it broke something in his expression.

“I made mistakes.””

Richard nodded.

“Everyone in this room did.””

His eyes moved to Patricia.

“But hers were the most expensive.””

Patricia flinched.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What is he talking about?””

She looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“No more protecting me.””

The words were almost identical to what he had said before.

But this time, they carried something different.

He wasn’t a child begging for answers.

He was a man demanding them.

Patricia looked at him.

And slowly, she nodded.

“You’re right.””

Everyone became still.

She wiped her tears.

“You deserve the truth.””

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

“Be careful.””

Patricia looked at him.

“I’m done being afraid of you.””

For the first time, Richard looked surprised.

Daniel noticed.

So did Marcus.

Patricia took a breath.

“When I met Richard, I was twenty-four years old.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I was young. I was alone. And I thought he was the answer to every problem I had.””

Daniel listened.

“He had money. Power. Confidence.””

Her voice became quieter.

“I didn’t see what was underneath.””

Richard rolled his eyes.

“Don’t turn this into a tragedy story.””

Patricia ignored him.

“Richard knew about Evelyn.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“He knew she existed?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Patricia continued.

“He knew you were her child.””

Daniel frowned.

“But why would he care?””

Patricia looked at Richard.

“Because Richard wanted something.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“What?””

Patricia answered:

“Control.””

The word hung in the room.

“He wanted influence over your biological father. He wanted access to things Marcus didn’t understand at the time.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What things?””

Patricia looked at the ring.

“The company records.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Richard stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

“No,” Daniel said.

Richard stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

“You don’t give orders here.””

A small smile appeared on Richard’s face.

“There he is.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“The man I was waiting to meet.””

Daniel felt disgust.

“You don’t know me.””

Richard smiled.

“I know more about you than you think.””

The statement made the room colder.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“What does he mean?””

Marcus hesitated.

Richard answered for him.

“I watched you grow up.””

Daniel froze.

“You what?””

“I knew where you went to school.””

A pause.

“I knew when you graduated.””

Another pause.

“I knew when you started your company.””

Daniel felt sick.

“You were watching me?””

Richard nodded.

“I wanted to know what kind of man you became.””

“And?””

Richard studied him.

“You became exactly what I expected.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard smiled.

“Someone who believes he controls everything.””

The words hit a little too close.

Daniel hated that.

Richard looked around.

“You all think this is about family.””

He shook his head.

“It isn’t.””

He pointed at the ring.

“It’s about what your father discovered.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

Richard laughed.

“History?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your father spent years trying to expose me.””

“And?””

“And he failed.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Because you made sure he did.””

Richard looked at him.

“Careful.””

Daniel watched the tension between them.

This wasn’t just a family secret.

This was a war that had started before he was born.

“Where is the box?”” Daniel asked.

Everyone looked at him.

Richard’s expression changed.

“You really want to open it?””

“Yes.””

“You may not like what you find.””

Daniel looked at Patricia.

“I already know what it feels like to find out my whole life was a lie.””

He held up the ring.

“What else can surprise me?””

Richard stared at him.

Then he smiled.

“Fair enough.””

He reached into his pocket.

Daniel immediately stepped back.

But Richard only pulled out a small piece of paper.

An address.

He placed it on the table.

“The bank.””

Marcus grabbed it.

Richard didn’t stop him.

“You’ll find your answers there.””

Daniel looked suspicious.

“Why are you helping us?””

Richard smiled.

“I’m not.””

The words made everyone freeze.

“I’m letting you open it.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Because after you see what’s inside…”

He paused.

“You’ll understand why your father was never the hero you think he was.””

Marcus’s face turned angry.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Ask yourself one question.””

Daniel waited.

“Why did your father hide the box instead of giving the information to the police?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Richard walked toward the exit.

Daniel watched him.

“You’re leaving?””

Richard stopped.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard looked back.

“Because unlike everyone else here…”

A faint smile.

“I know exactly what’s inside.””

Then he left.

The ballroom door closed.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Is he telling the truth?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Daniel’s heart sank.

“What don’t I know?””

Marcus looked down.

“Your father wasn’t perfect.””

Daniel waited.

“He made choices he regretted.””

“What choices?””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She nodded.

“Tell him.””

Marcus sighed.

“Your biological father created a hidden account.””

Daniel frowned.

“For what?””

“To protect people.””

“From Richard?””

Marcus nodded.

“But he also hid information from everyone.””

Daniel looked at the ring.

“So the box has evidence.””

“Yes.””

“And maybe evidence against him too.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised Daniel.

He expected excuses.

Instead, everyone was finally admitting the truth.

Evelyn touched Daniel’s arm.

“We need to go.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward the ballroom doors.

“Because if Richard knows we’re opening it…”

She stopped.

Daniel understood.

“We’re not safe.””

Marcus nodded.

“He won’t attack us here.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because there are cameras. Witnesses.””

Marcus’s expression became serious.

“But once we leave…”

Nobody finished the sentence.

They didn’t need to.

Angela stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You told me this morning you wanted to spend your life with me.””

Her voice trembled.

“I don’t know what happens after tonight.””

She looked at the destroyed wedding around them.

“But I know I’m not walking away when you need someone beside you.””

Daniel stared at her.

After everything.

After his entire world changed.

She was still there.

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

Together, they left the ballroom.

The luxury wedding they had planned for months was abandoned behind them.

Outside, the night air was cold.

Marcus led them toward his car.

Evelyn walked beside Daniel.

Neither spoke.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A black vehicle parked across the street.

The headlights were off.

The engine was running.

Daniel stopped.

“Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

The car door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not Richard.

Someone younger.

Someone Daniel had never seen before.

The man held an envelope.

He walked directly toward Daniel.

“This is for you.””

Daniel didn’t take it.

“Who are you?””

The man looked nervous.

“I worked for your father.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“What does the envelope say?””

The man swallowed.

“Your father wanted Daniel to have it if the ring was ever found.””

Daniel slowly took the envelope.

His name was written on it.

Again.

But this time, there were only four words.

Do not trust Marcus.

Daniel looked up.

May you like

Marcus’s face had gone pale.

Because he knew exactly what that message meant.
