Chapter 9: The Man Who Took the Blame
The sentence stayed in the air.
I was the reason your father disappeared.
Daniel stared at Marcus.
The man who had walked into his wedding claiming to be his father.
The man who said he loved him.
The man who spent thirty years away.
Now standing in front of him, admitting he was the reason everything fell apart.
Daniel felt something inside him go quiet.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
“Explain.””
Marcus looked down.
The city lights reflected in his eyes.
“I owe you that.””
Daniel held up the flash drive.
“No more half-truths.””
Marcus nodded.
“No more.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“I should have told him years ago.””
“You were trying to protect him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was heavy.
“I was trying to protect myself from seeing what I had done.””
Daniel listened.
For once, nobody was interrupting.
Nobody was controlling the conversation.
The truth was finally being allowed to exist.
Marcus took a breath.
“Thomas found out about Richard’s crimes before anyone else.””
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
“The evidence.””
“Yes.””
“He was going to expose him.””
Marcus nodded.
“But Richard was not someone you could simply accuse.””
“Because of his power?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Patricia.
“He had influence everywhere.””
Patricia looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew.””
Patricia whispered:
“Yes.””
“You knew everything?””
She closed her eyes.
“Not everything.””
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“But enough.””
Patricia nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus continued.
“Thomas asked me for help.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why you?””
“Because I was the only person Richard didn’t know about.””
Marcus paused.
“I had no money. No power. No reputation.””
A sad smile crossed his face.
“I was invisible.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And then?””
“I helped Thomas collect evidence.””
The wind moved through the parking lot.
“But Richard found out.””
Marcus nodded.
“He discovered Thomas had created a backup plan.””
“The box.””
“Yes.””
“And the ring.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked down.
“The key.””
Marcus nodded.
“Thomas knew if anything happened to him, someone needed to find the truth.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“But he died.””
Marcus looked away.
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
But it carried years of pain.
“What happened that night?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I followed Thomas.””
Daniel frowned.
“You followed him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could protect him.””
A pause.
“I was wrong.””
Marcus looked at the ground.
“Richard’s men found us.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“What happened?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Thomas told me to run.””
Daniel stared.
“He saved you?””
Marcus nodded.
“He knew if we both stayed, nobody would survive.””
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
“And you ran.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“I ran.””
Marcus’s voice broke.
“I have hated myself for that every day since.””
Daniel looked away.
He wanted to be angry.
He wanted to blame him.
But he saw something in Marcus that he recognized.
A person who had already spent decades punishing himself.
Then Marcus said something unexpected.
“But that’s not the reason your father disappeared.””
Daniel looked back.
“What?””
Marcus looked at Patricia.
“It was because of her.””
Patricia closed her eyes.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Mom?””
Patricia looked like she had been waiting for this moment.
“I made a choice.””
The words were barely audible.
“What choice?””
She looked at Daniel.
“The choice that destroyed everything.””
Nobody spoke.
Patricia continued.
“When Richard found out Thomas had evidence, he threatened me.””
Daniel stared.
“With what?””
“With you.””
The answer came instantly.
“He said he would take you.””
Daniel felt his anger weaken.
Not disappear.
But weaken.
Patricia continued.
“He told me that if I helped him, he would leave you alone.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You believed him.””
“I was young.””
“You were scared.””
Patricia looked at Marcus.
“Yes.””
Marcus sighed.
“And Richard used that fear.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What did you do?””
Patricia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I told Richard where Thomas was going.””
Silence.
Daniel felt like the ground disappeared.
“You gave him his location?””
Patricia nodded.
“I thought Richard would scare him.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought he would force him to stop.””
Daniel stared.
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
Patricia covered her face.
“He went too far.””
Daniel stepped back.
The truth hurt differently now.
Because it wasn’t a simple story of good and bad.
It was a story of fear.
And fear had destroyed everything.
“What happened to Thomas?””
Marcus answered.
“He survived.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Marcus nodded.
“Richard thought he killed him.””
“But he didn’t?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then why didn’t he come back?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then Patricia.
Then Daniel.
“Because he believed coming back would put you in danger.””
Daniel whispered:
“He stayed away for me.””
“Yes.””
The realization hurt.
Because all his life, Daniel had imagined abandonment.
But maybe the truth was sacrifice.
Maybe the people who disappeared weren’t always the people who stopped caring.
Sometimes they were the people who cared too much.
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Jonathan answered.
“Everything.””
He stepped closer.
“Richard’s financial records. The names of people he paid. The evidence Thomas collected.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And the proof about Marcus?””
Jonathan nodded.
“There is something else.””
“What?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“The recording.””
Daniel frowned.
“What recording?””
“Thomas recorded a conversation.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“No.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“Yes.””
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“Thomas never told me he recorded it.””
Jonathan said quietly:
“Because he didn’t want you to know.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Know what?””
Jonathan looked at Marcus.
Then Daniel.
“The truth about the night Thomas disappeared.””
Marcus looked away.
Daniel’s heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel took the flash drive.
“We’re watching it.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was firm.
“I’m done being protected from my own life.””
Angela moved beside him.
“I agree.””
They found a small conference room inside the hotel.
The wedding venue.
The place where Daniel had planned to start his marriage.
Now it became the place where he would finally learn who he was.
They connected the flash drive.
A single video file appeared.
Thomas Carter.
Recorded thirty years earlier.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Because even though he had never met the man…
he felt like he knew him.
The video began.
A younger Thomas appeared on the screen.
His face was tired.
But his eyes were calm.
“If you are watching this, Daniel, then I am gone.””
Daniel looked down.
His hands trembled.
Thomas continued.
“I need you to know something.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I was not taken from you.””
A pause.
“I left.””
Daniel froze.
Marcus looked shocked.
Patricia covered her mouth.
Thomas continued.
“I left because I discovered the final piece of the truth.””
The screen flickered.
Then Thomas said the words nobody expected.
“The person who created this entire situation…”
Daniel leaned closer.
Thomas looked straight into the camera.
“…was not Richard Hale.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then Patricia.
Then Evelyn.
Thomas continued.
“It was someone closer.””
A pause.
“Someone who loved Daniel.””
The video ended.
Everyone stared at the blank screen.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
Because there was only one person left.
One person who had loved him his entire life.
One person who had been there from the beginning.
The room slowly turned toward Patricia.
And Patricia began crying before anyone asked.
May you like
Because she knew.
The final secret was hers.
