Chapter 13: The Truth Elena Carried
The message remained on Isaiah’s phone.
*Because she didn’t leave alone.*
Nobody spoke.
The words felt heavier than all the documents spread across the table.
Maya looked at her mother.
“What does that mean?””
Elena’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Fear.
Isaiah noticed immediately.
“Elena.””
She looked away.
“Maya…”
“No.””
Maya’s voice was quiet but firm.
“Not again.””
The room became still.
“No more protecting me from the truth.””
Elena closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“You’re right.””
She took a breath.
“There is something I never told anyone.””
Isaiah stepped closer.
“What?””
Elena looked at him.
“Something I was afraid would destroy everything.””
Maya felt her heartbeat increase.
“What happened after you left?””
Elena sat down slowly.
“I didn’t leave because I wanted a new life.””
She looked at Maya.
“I left because I thought I was protecting you.””
Maya frowned.
“Protecting me from what?””
Elena looked at the old photograph.
“From Marcus.””
Everyone became silent.
“He knew I was going to expose him.””
Isaiah stared.
“Expose him?””
Elena nodded.
“Before I left, I found documents.””
Jordan looked at the files on the table.
“Like these?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at them.
“Marcus had been moving money from the foundation.””
Isaiah’s expression hardened.
“How much?””
“Enough that students were losing opportunities.””
Mrs. Whitmore looked devastated.
“I had no idea.””
“He hid it carefully,” Elena said.
“He created fake companies. Fake expenses. He made it look legal.””
Maya looked at Jordan.
“Your grandfather didn’t know?””
Mrs. Whitmore shook her head.
“Marcus handled the business side. I trusted him.””
Elena continued.
“When I confronted him, he threatened me.””
Isaiah stepped forward.
“What did he say?””
Elena looked down.
“He told me nobody would believe me.””
A pause.
“He said he had already convinced people I was unstable.””
Maya felt anger rise.
“He tried to make everyone think you were the problem.””
Elena nodded.
“He knew if he could separate me from Isaiah, he could control everything.””
Isaiah’s face filled with regret.
“I should have listened.””
Elena looked at him.
“You were hurt.””
“I should have trusted you.””
The words were simple.
But after twenty-five years, they carried enormous weight.
Elena reached into her bag again.
She pulled out a small notebook.
“I kept this.””
Maya looked at it.
“What is it?””
“My evidence.””
She opened the notebook.
Inside were handwritten notes.
Dates.
Numbers.
Names.
Everything Marcus had done.
Jordan looked through the pages.
“This is enough to prove fraud.””
Mrs. Whitmore nodded.
“But why didn’t you bring it forward?””
Elena’s hands trembled.
“Because Marcus found out I had it.””
Maya froze.
“What happened?””
“He followed me.””
Isaiah’s expression changed.
“He followed you?””
“Yes.””
Elena looked at him.
“The night I left…”
She paused.
“I wasn’t just leaving because of our argument.””
The room went silent.
“I was leaving because Marcus had threatened to hurt you.””
Isaiah stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He told me if I exposed him, he would destroy everything you built.””
Maya looked at her father.
“He threatened Dad?””
Elena nodded.
“I believed him.””
Isaiah shook his head.
“You should have told me.””
“I tried.””
The pain in her voice was unmistakable.
“But Marcus had already done what he was good at.””
“Lying.””
“Yes.””
Elena looked at Isaiah.
“I thought you hated me.””
“I never hated you.””
“I didn’t know that.””
Silence.
Maya looked between them.
Two people who had spent years believing the worst because someone else created the story.
Then Jordan found something.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
He held a document.
“There’s a date here.””
“What about it?”” Isaiah asked.
Jordan pointed.
“This was filed six months after Elena left.””
Maya leaned closer.
“What is it?””
Jordan’s face changed.
“A private investigation.””
Isaiah took the paper.
The name at the bottom made him freeze.
“Marcus hired someone to investigate me?””
“No.””
Jordan looked closer.
“He investigated Elena.””
Maya felt cold.
“Why?””
Jordan turned the page.
And there it was.
The reason.
*Objective: Locate Elena’s child. Confirm inheritance connection.*
Nobody moved.
Maya looked confused.
“My child?””
Elena’s face went pale.
Isaiah slowly looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Elena whispered:
“I was going to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Maya…”
She took a shaking breath.
“You had a brother.””
The room disappeared.
Maya stared.
“What?””
Elena cried silently.
“I was pregnant before I left.””
Isaiah looked completely shocked.
“No.””
“I lost him.””
Maya covered her mouth.
“He died?””
Elena nodded.
“When I left, I was pregnant.””
Isaiah looked broken.
“I didn’t know.””
“I know.””
The pain in Elena’s voice was unbearable.
“I never got the chance to tell you.””
Maya looked at the documents.
“Then why did Marcus investigate?””
Nobody answered.
Then Jordan whispered:
“Because he thought there was something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed to the final page.
The last note.
*The child may be alive.*
Maya’s blood ran cold.
“What?””
Isaiah grabbed the paper.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“This isn’t possible.””
Elena looked terrified.
Because she knew something.
Something she had never said.
May you like
And when she finally spoke, the entire room changed.
“I never saw my baby die.””
