Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Silence

The auditorium felt colder.

Maya looked at her father.

A thousand questions filled her mind.

But one mattered most.

“Who?””

Isaiah didn’t answer immediately.

He stared at the floor.

Like saying the name would make everything real.

Mrs. Whitmore stepped forward.

“Isaiah.””

He looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

The question made Maya’s stomach tighten.

“You know who it is?””

Mrs. Whitmore looked away.

“I know who he is.””

Maya turned.

“He?””

Isaiah nodded slowly.

“The person who helped me build the foundation was Marcus Reed.””

The name meant nothing to Maya.

But it clearly meant something to the others.

Jordan, who had stayed quietly near the doors, suddenly looked confused.

“Marcus Reed?””

Everyone turned toward him.

Jordan swallowed.

“That’s my grandfather’s old business partner.””

Mrs. Whitmore’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

Maya looked between them.

“Why would he do that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Isaiah spoke.

“Because Marcus wanted control.””

“Control of what?””

“The foundation.””

Maya frowned.

“But why would separating you and Mom help him?””

Isaiah looked at the empty stage.

“Because Elena was the first person who convinced me that the foundation should belong to the students.””

Maya listened.

“She believed the money should go directly to people who needed it.””

“And Marcus?””

“He believed it should become a business.””

Mrs. Whitmore nodded.

“He saw opportunity.””

Maya understood.

“So he wanted the foundation for himself.””

“Yes.””

Isaiah’s voice became heavier.

“When I refused, he became angry.””

Maya looked at him.

“And he lied?””

Isaiah nodded.

“I think so.””

The room was silent.

A person they trusted.

A person who stood beside them.

A person who helped create something beautiful.

Had tried to destroy it.

Maya looked at the envelope.

“And the letter?””

Isaiah looked at Elena.

“She gave it to him?””

Elena nodded slowly.

“He said he would make sure Isaiah received it.””

Mrs. Whitmore closed her eyes.

“I should have seen it.””

Isaiah looked at her.

“You couldn’t have known.””

“But I trusted him too.””

Nobody spoke.

The weight of betrayal filled the room.

Jordan stepped closer.

“My grandfather worked with him?””

Mrs. Whitmore nodded.

“For years.””

“Then why don’t I know him?””

“Because after your grandfather died, Marcus disappeared.””

Maya looked at Isaiah.

“Where is he now?””

Nobody knew.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Isaiah stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Maya turned the screen toward him.

One sentence.

That was all.

*You finally found the truth.*

The room went silent.

A second message appeared.

*But you still don’t know why Elena left.*

Maya felt a chill.

Isaiah grabbed the phone.

“Who sent this?””

Another message arrived.

*Ask your father what happened the night you were born.*

Nobody moved.

Elena’s face turned pale.

Isaiah stared at the screen.

And Maya knew immediately.

There was another secret.

Another piece of her life she had never been told.

“Dad?””

Isaiah didn’t answer.

“Dad, what happened?””

His silence terrified her.

Because Isaiah Carter was a man who always had an answer.

Always had a solution.

Always knew what to say.

But now?

He looked completely lost.

Jordan stepped back.

“Whoever sent that knows something.””

Mrs. Whitmore looked at Isaiah.

“Isaiah…”

He whispered:

“I thought that part was buried forever.””

Maya’s heart raced.

“What part?””

Isaiah looked at his daughter.

His eyes filled with regret.

“The night you were born…”

A pause.

“…was the night everything changed.””

Maya held her breath.

“Why?””

Isaiah looked toward the auditorium doors.

Like he expected someone else to walk in.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

This time, the caller ID appeared.

Not unknown.

A name.

Marcus Reed.

May you like

Isaiah stared at the screen.

And Maya watched her father realize the past had finally come back to collect its debt.
