Chapter 14: The Truth in the Passenger Seat
The police allowed Samuel to view the recovered footage at the station.
They had already copied the file and secured the original memory card.
I sat beside my mother in a small interview room while Thomas and Arthur stood behind us.
On the monitor, the image was dark.
Rain streaked across a windshield.
The camera appeared to be mounted inside a vehicle.
My father was driving.
I recognized his hands.
His watch.
The dashboard.
Then a second person entered the frame.
A woman.
Claire.
She climbed into the passenger seat.
My mother inhaled sharply.
The timestamp showed the night of the accident.
Daniel glanced toward her.
"Did you bring it?""
Claire nodded.
She placed a folder on the dashboard.
"Everything is there. The original records. The payments. The names.""
Daniel looked worried.
"Where's Lily?""
"Safe.""
"Are you sure?""
Claire hesitated.
"Richard knows where she is.""
Daniel gripped the steering wheel.
"Then she's not safe.""
Claire looked at him.
"You promised you would help her.""
"I am trying.""
"Trying isn't enough.""
My father turned toward her.
"Claire, listen to me. Richard has people inside the hospital. Evelyn has access to the medical records. They know about Nia.""
Claire lowered her voice.
"Then take her to Elena.""
"I am.""
The footage flickered.
A car appeared in the rearview mirror.
A black SUV.
My stomach tightened.
It was the same vehicle we had seen in the earlier photographs.
Claire looked behind them.
"That's Richard.""
Daniel accelerated.
The SUV followed.
The camera shook as the car turned onto a narrow road.
Then a voice came through the recording.
Richard.
He was speaking through a phone connected to the car.
"Daniel, pull over.""
My father ignored him.
Richard tried again.
"You're making a mistake.""
Daniel's face was tense.
"You already made yours.""
There was a loud crack.
The car swerved.
My mother grabbed my hand.
The footage showed Daniel fighting the steering wheel.
Claire screamed.
Then the screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Samuel asked the officer to replay the last ten seconds.
The image returned.
This time, Thomas zoomed in on the rearview mirror.
A second vehicle had approached from the opposite direction.
A dark sedan.
It wasn't the SUV.
The sedan pulled alongside the passenger side.
For a moment, a face was visible behind the glass.
I leaned closer.
"Stop.""
Thomas paused the footage.
"Do you recognize someone?""
I stared at the blurry image.
A woman.
Dark hair.
A silver bracelet.
My breath caught.
"That's the woman from the photograph.""
Samuel looked at me.
"Claire?""
I shook my head.
"No. The other woman.""
My mother stood.
"Let me see.""
She stared at the screen.
Then she whispered a name.
"Vanessa.""
The room went silent.
I looked again.
The woman in the sedan was my cousin.
The same woman who had mocked my wheelchair at Grandfather's birthday dinner.
The same woman who had signed the fraudulent inheritance documents.
The same woman who had worn a red coat at the accident scene.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"She was there.""
Arthur closed his eyes.
"God help us.""
The officer paused the video again.
"We've been trying to identify the driver of that vehicle.""
Thomas pointed to the rear window.
"There's a reflection.""
He enlarged it.
A second face appeared.
A man.
Richard.
He wasn't driving the SUV.
He was in the sedan with Vanessa.
The footage continued.
Daniel's car struck the guardrail.
The screen shook violently.
Then the passenger door opened.
A figure stepped out.
Vanessa.
She looked toward the driver's seat.
Then she turned away.
Claire was still inside.
Daniel was moving.
He was alive.
Vanessa took something from the floor and ran.
A few seconds later, the SUV stopped behind them.
Richard got out.
He approached the driver's side.
The camera angle changed as the vehicle tilted.
We couldn't see what happened next.
But we heard my father's voice.
"Richard... don't.""
Then a second voice.
Evelyn.
"Where is the girl?""
Richard answered.
"Not here.""
"Then find her.""
The recording ended.
My mother was crying silently.
Arthur looked as though he might collapse.
I couldn't take my eyes off the black screen.
"Claire was in the passenger seat," I whispered.
Samuel nodded.
"She was the unidentified passenger in the original accident report.""
"And Vanessa left her there.""
Thomas added quietly, "Then Richard and Evelyn arrived.""
The officer folded his hands.
"This footage changes everything. We have enough to reopen the case as a suspected homicide and investigate the attempted cover-up.""
I looked at him.
"What about Vanessa?""
"We're issuing a warrant.""
"And Richard?""
"He's already been contacted.""
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Vanessa.
I stared at the screen.
Arthur shook his head.
"Don't answer.""
But I did.
Her voice sounded breathless.
"Nia?""
"What do you want?""
"Please. You have to listen.""
I said nothing.
"I know you saw the footage.""
"Yes.""
She began crying.
"I didn't mean for it to happen.""
"Which part?""
Silence.
"Vanessa, which part didn't you mean?""
She sobbed.
"I was supposed to take the folder. That's all. Richard said your father was going to destroy everything.""
"You left Claire in the car.""
"I was scared.""
"You watched him die.""
"I didn't know he was still alive!""
I closed my eyes.
"You saw him moving.""
She didn't answer.
"Why did you run?""
"Because Richard told me to.""
"Why did you wear his watch?""
Her breathing changed.
"Because he gave it to me.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why?""
"Because he said it belonged to the family now. He said Daniel was gone and there was nothing you could do.""
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"You're my cousin.""
"I know.""
"You sat at that dinner and laughed at me.""
"I know.""
"You knew what happened to my father.""
"I was trying to survive, Nia!""
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked one question.
"Where is Lily?""
Vanessa went silent.
Then she whispered:
"She's with Richard.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"He found her. He took her before the police could get to her.""
"Where?""
"I don't know exactly. But I heard him say he was taking her to the old research center.""
Thomas grabbed his phone.
Vanessa continued.
"Listen to me. Richard knows you have the footage. He's going to destroy the archive. And if he finds Lily...""
The call cut off.
Thomas was already moving.
"We need to get to that facility.""
The police officer stood.
"We'll organize a response team.""
But Samuel looked at me.
"There's something we need to establish first. If Lily is there, Richard may use her to bargain.""
I looked at the photograph of the little girl.
The child my father had tried to save.
"Then we don't give him time to make that decision.""
We drove toward the abandoned research center with police vehicles following behind.
The building stood beyond a row of dead trees, its windows dark and its entrance chained.
Mason used the key card.
The lock clicked.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and disinfectant.
Thomas found an elevator leading underground.
We descended.
At the bottom, a corridor stretched into darkness.
A light flickered at the far end.
Then we heard a voice.
Richard.
"You're late, Nia.""
He stepped out of a doorway.
A gun was pointed at the floor.
Behind him stood Lily.
She was no longer a little girl.
She was a young woman in her twenties.
And beside her stood Evelyn Brooks.
Alive.
The police officers raised their weapons.
Richard smiled.
"Nobody moves.""
Evelyn looked directly at me.
"Your father should have left this alone.""
I stared at her.
"You were declared dead.""
She gave a small laugh.
"Apparently, someone made a mistake.""
Then Lily stepped forward.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Nia," she whispered.
I looked at her.
She held up a small photograph.
It showed my father standing beside a hospital bed.
A little girl lay beneath the blankets.
Lily.
And beside her, holding her hand, was a young woman in a wheelchair.
Me.
I stared at the photograph.
I had no memory of being there.
Lily's voice trembled.
"Your father didn't just try to save me.""
May you like
She looked toward Evelyn.
"He saved you too.""
