The Seat They Tried to Hide / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Family Row

“Keep Sarah away until Ethan’s DNA result is announced.””

Ethan heard the words before he understood what they meant.

He was standing in the aisle of the graduation auditorium, still wearing his burgundy cap and gown, gold stole lying perfectly against his chest, when he saw his mother fighting with Vanessa over a crumpled white place card.

The auditorium was packed with Black families dressed in their Sunday best. Burgundy seats rose in neat rows beneath the bright stage lights. Graduates waited in clusters near the side entrance, whispering and adjusting their caps while teachers directed them into position.

Sarah was supposed to be sitting in the reserved family row.

Instead, she was crouched beside a chair, searching.

Her gray-streaked braids slipped over one shoulder as she checked beneath another seat.

“I know my name was here,” she said.

Vanessa stood beside her in a royal-blue dress, one silver heel planted firmly on something beneath the chair.

She didn't look nervous.

That was what bothered Ethan later.

She looked prepared.

Sarah noticed the corner of a white card sticking out from beneath Vanessa's shoe.

“Excuse me,” Sarah said.

“Could you move your foot?””

Vanessa glanced down.

Then she smiled.

“You must be mistaken.””

Sarah stared at her.

“My name was printed on that card.””

Vanessa's smile tightened.

“I said you're mistaken.””

Sarah reached down.

Vanessa pressed her heel harder.

The paper crinkled.

For a second, neither woman moved.

Then Sarah pulled.

The card slid free.

Across the front, beneath a smear where Vanessa's heel had crushed the ink, one name remained perfectly visible.

*SARAH.*

Sarah slowly straightened.

Vanessa's expression changed.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Ethan had seen enough.

He stepped out of the aisle and crossed toward them.

“Mom?””

Sarah looked at him.

Her eyes were already wet.

“I was looking for my seat,” she whispered.

Ethan took the damaged card from her hand.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Why were you hiding my mother's seat?””

A few heads turned.

The family behind them stopped talking.

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“This isn't the place.””

“Then where is the place?”” Ethan asked.

“Ethan,” Sarah said softly.

But he didn't look away from Vanessa.

She folded her arms.

“Sit down before you ruin this.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Ruin what?””

“Your graduation.””

“No,” he said.

“You're the one making a scene.””

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the smartphone in her hand.

The screen lit up.

A message appeared.

Ethan caught only part of it.

*Keep Sarah away—*

He reached for the phone.

Vanessa jerked it backward.

“Don't touch my phone.””

“Why?””

“Because it's mine.””

“Then unlock it.””

“I don't have to explain myself to you.””

Ethan looked at his mother.

Sarah was watching Vanessa now, her face pale.

“Mom,” Ethan said, “what is she talking about?””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Ethan, please. Not here.””

That word stopped him.

Please.

Vanessa never said please to him.

He reached again.

This time, he caught the phone.

Vanessa gasped.

“Give it back!””

The screen was still unlocked.

A message thread filled the display.

Ethan's eyes moved across the words.

*KEEP SARAH AWAY UNTIL ETHAN'S DNA RESULT IS ANNOUNCED.*

His breathing stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa lunged.

Ethan pulled the phone away.

“DNA result?””

The auditorium seemed to disappear.

Sarah whispered his name.

“Ethan…”

He looked down.

An attachment sat beneath the message.

*PATERNITY TEST — ETHAN.*

His thumb hovered over it.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Don't open that.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

He tapped the file.

A loading symbol appeared.

Sarah covered her mouth.

And for the first time that afternoon, Vanessa looked terrified.

Then the report opened.

*PATERNITY TEST — ETHAN*

Ethan's thumb moved toward the result.

May you like

And Sarah whispered,

“Baby… don't.””
