The Seat They Tried to Hide / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Voice From the Past

Sarah nearly dropped the phone.

She pressed it tighter against her ear.

“Who is this?””

Static.

Then breathing.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Sarah's hand began to shake.

“Who is this?””

The voice returned.

“You know exactly who I am.””

Sarah backed away from the family row.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Daniel is dead.””

A low laugh came through the speaker.

“I know what you told everyone.””

Sarah's knees weakened.

Onstage, Ethan continued speaking.

“I used to think graduation was about reaching the end of something…”

His voice carried through the auditorium.

Sarah couldn't hear the rest.

She could hear only the voice on her phone.

“Take Ethan and leave.””

“Where?””

“Anywhere.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus wasn't supposed to send that report.””

Sarah looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa was staring at her.

She knew.

Sarah mouthed, *It's him.*

Vanessa's eyes widened.

The caller spoke again.

“Don't tell Ethan.””

Sarah whispered, “He's already asking.””

“Then lie.””

“I can't.””

“You've been doing it for eighteen years.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

The words cut deep because they were true.

Onstage, Ethan paused.

The auditorium erupted in applause.

He smiled faintly.

“I want to thank the people who stood behind me when I didn't know how to stand on my own.””

His gaze moved directly to Sarah.

She began crying.

Ethan's expression changed.

He could tell something was wrong.

He stepped away from the podium.

“Mom?””

The microphone carried the word through the entire auditorium.

Every head turned.

Sarah quickly wiped her face.

“I'm okay.””

Ethan didn't believe her.

The voice on her phone whispered,

“Don't make me come inside.””

Sarah's blood ran cold.

She turned toward the rear doors.

Nothing.

Then she noticed a man in a dark suit standing beside the emergency exit.

His face was partially hidden.

He raised a hand to his ear.

He was on the phone.

Sarah's breath caught.

She dropped her phone.

It hit the floor.

Vanessa rushed over.

“Sarah?””

Sarah pointed toward the doors.

“He's here.””

“Who?””

“Daniel.””

Vanessa looked.

The man was gone.

Ethan stepped down from the stage.

The principal hurried toward him.

“Ethan, where are you going?””

“My mother.””

“Your speech isn't finished.””

“My mother needs me.””

He crossed the stage before anyone could stop him.

The crowd murmured.

Sarah picked up her phone.

The call had ended.

Ethan reached her.

“What's happening?””

Sarah shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“You're crying.””

“I got emotional.””

“You dropped your phone.””

“I’m fine.””

“Mom.””

He lowered his voice.

“Tell me the truth.””

Sarah looked at him.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered,

“We don't have time.””

Ethan's face hardened.

“Time for what?””

Vanessa took his arm.

“We need to leave.””

“No.””

“Ethan—”

“No one is dragging me out of my graduation.””

“You're in danger.””

He stared at her.

“From who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Your father.””

The words seemed to stop the room.

Ethan slowly turned toward Sarah.

“My father is dead.””

Sarah whispered,

“I don't know anymore.””

A scream came from the rear of the auditorium.

Everyone turned.

A chair had overturned.

People stood.

A Black man in a dark suit was moving quickly through the aisle.

The principal shouted for everyone to remain seated.

Ethan recognized the face.

The man from the doors.

The man from the photograph.

Marcus.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Marcus?””

The man stopped.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, the entire auditorium disappeared.

Marcus looked at Ethan with something between grief and relief.

“Ethan.””

Sarah grabbed her son's shoulder.

“Don't go to him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Sarah, you need to tell him.””

“You promised.””

“I promised to protect him.””

“You promised to stay away.””

“I stayed away for eighteen years.””

Marcus's voice broke.

“I watched from a distance. I paid his school fees when you couldn't. I sent birthday cards you never gave him.””

Ethan stared.

“What?””

Sarah shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“Ask your mother about the locked drawer in her bedroom.””

Sarah's face went white.

Ethan whispered,

“What drawer?””

“Ethan, don't.””

“What drawer?””

Marcus took one step closer.

“The one with every letter I ever wrote you.””

Sarah moved between them.

“Enough.””

Marcus stopped.

His eyes filled.

“I never wanted this to happen in front of all these people.””

“Then why did you send the report?””

“Because someone else found out.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked past Sarah.

Toward Vanessa.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Ethan noticed.

“You two know each other.””

Marcus said nothing.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“How?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I knew Marcus before I knew you.””

“How?””

“Your father introduced us.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“My father.””

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel wasn't your biological father.””

“I know.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“No.””

He looked at Ethan.

“You don't know.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus glanced at Sarah.

Then at the graduation crowd.

Then toward the exit.

“Because the DNA report you opened wasn't the only test.””

Ethan's stomach dropped.

“What other test?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“The first report was from eighteen years ago.””

Sarah whispered,

“Marcus, stop.””

“The second one was done last week.””

Ethan stared at him.

“Why?””

Marcus looked directly into Ethan's eyes.

“Because I needed to know whether Daniel knew the truth before he died.””

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.

“What truth?””

Marcus reached inside his jacket.

Sarah screamed,

“No!””

Several people ducked.

Marcus froze.

Slowly, he pulled out a small photograph.

He held it toward Ethan.

“Look at the date.””

Ethan took it.

The photograph showed Daniel Carter standing outside a hospital.

Beside him stood Sarah.

And beside Sarah stood Marcus.

On the back, handwritten in black ink:

*June 14 — Three days after Ethan was born.*

Ethan stared at the date.

Then at his mother.

“Mom…”

Sarah began sobbing.

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

“Your father didn't die because of an accident.””

The auditorium fell silent.

“He was murdered.””

A phone suddenly rang behind Marcus.

Everyone turned.

A Black woman in the second row looked down at her phone.

Her face went pale.

She whispered,

“It's him.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

She looked toward Ethan.

May you like

Then answered,

“Daniel.””
