The Secret My Wife Left Behind / Chapter 14 / 17

Chapter 12: The Inheritance of Lies

My mother had left everything to Vanessa.

The house.

The investments.

The land my father had purchased decades earlier.

Everything.

I couldn't understand it.

My mother had spent twelve years pretending my father was dead. She had hidden the truth about Vanessa. She had helped alter hospital records.

And now I was learning that her estate had been arranged to benefit the very woman who had destroyed my family.

"Why would Mom leave Vanessa everything?"" I asked.

Robert was standing between two detectives.

"Because she believed Vanessa was her daughter.""

"She knew that?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

Robert lowered his eyes.

"Because your father convinced her that revealing Vanessa's identity would expose the family's financial crimes.""

Officer Reynolds stepped forward.

"Mr. Hayes, we'll continue this conversation at the station.""

Robert nodded.

Before they took him away, he turned toward me.

"Marcus, your mother didn't know everything Thomas was doing. She thought the inheritance would protect Vanessa.""

"Protect her from what?""

Robert hesitated.

"From the people who wanted the original adoption records.""

"Who?""

He looked at Officer Reynolds.

Then he whispered:

"The people who financed your father's disappearance.""

The detectives escorted him out.

I stood alone in the office, staring at the family photograph on his desk.

Nia.

Lily.

Me.

Three smiling faces.

A family built on love, surrounded by people who had spent years trying to turn it into a transaction.

I drove to my mother's house.

She was sitting in the kitchen when I arrived.

A cup of tea rested between her hands.

She looked up.

"You found out.""

I didn't sit.

"Why did you leave your estate to Vanessa?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Because she's my daughter.""

"Your biological daughter?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I stared at her.

"You knew?""

"Thomas told me when she was born.""

"Then why did you let Rebecca raise her?""

My mother began crying.

"Because I couldn't.""

"Why?""

She looked toward the window.

"Your father had threatened to destroy our family if I tried to keep her.""

I laughed without humor.

"You let him take your baby.""

"He told me she would have a better life.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

I walked to the table.

"Did you know he told Vanessa she was entitled to Lily's life?""

My mother shook her head.

"No.""

"Did you know he was using her to get the insurance money?""

"No.""

"Did you know he was planning to take Lily?""

She looked up.

"Take her where?""

I didn't answer.

My mother began shaking.

"Marcus, what has he done?""

I pulled out the DNA report.

"Vanessa isn't Lily's twin. She's your daughter. My half-sister.""

My mother stared at the paper.

Then she covered her mouth.

"Oh, God.""

For a moment, she looked like the woman I remembered from childhood.

The woman who packed my lunches.

The woman who waited up when I came home late.

The woman who cried when I left for college.

Then I remembered the hospital records.

The forged documents.

The years of lies.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She reached for my hand.

I pulled it away.

"Please, Marcus.""

"No. You've had twelve years.""

She lowered her head.

"Thomas said Vanessa would be safe with the Prices. He said he would arrange everything.""

"And when Nia discovered the truth?""

My mother's eyes filled.

"She came to me.""

"When?""

"Six months before she died.""

"What did she want?""

"She wanted me to tell you about Vanessa.""

"Why didn't you?""

My mother started crying harder.

"Because I was afraid you would hate me.""

I looked at her.

"Did you help Thomas enter Nia's hospital room?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom.""

She slowly nodded.

My entire body went cold.

"How?""

"Thomas asked me to provide an old visitor authorization.""

"Why?""

"He said he needed to speak with Nia privately.""

"And you believed him?""

"I didn't know he would hurt her.""

I stepped away.

"Did you see him that night?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Was he alone?""

She looked at me.

"No.""

"Who was with him?""

My mother swallowed.

"Vanessa.""

I felt sick.

"What did they do?""

"I don't know. I waited outside.""

"Did you hear anything?""

She began trembling.

"Your father was shouting. Nia was crying. Then I heard something fall.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't you call for help?""

My mother whispered:

"Because when I entered the room, Nia was already unconscious.""

I stared at her.

"Was she breathing?""

My mother nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you call an ambulance?""

She broke down.

"Thomas told me the doctors were already coming.""

I grabbed the back of a chair.

"Did they?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

The silence that followed was unbearable.

"Mom, what happened next?""

She looked at me.

"Thomas took something from the bedside table.""

"What?""

"A small envelope.""

"Where did he put it?""

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know.""

I leaned forward.

"Did Nia say anything?""

My mother began crying.

"Yes.""

"What?""

She looked at me with an expression I would never forget.

"She said your name.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What exactly?""

My mother whispered:

"She said, 'Tell Marcus the baby is alive.''"

I froze.

"What baby?""

My mother shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I stared at her.

Lily was nine years old.

Vanessa was twenty-nine.

There had been no other pregnancy.

At least, none that I knew about.

Then my mother reached into her purse and removed a photograph.

It showed Nia in a hospital bed.

Her stomach was visibly swollen.

But the photograph was dated eleven months before Lily was born.

I stared at it.

"Mom, what is this?""

She placed the photograph on the table.

"Your wife was pregnant again.""

My heart stopped.

"That's impossible. She never told me.""

"She lost the baby.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Why?""

My mother looked toward the hallway.

"Because Thomas arranged for her to have an emergency procedure.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He said the baby had a serious medical condition. He told Nia there was no hope.""

I shook my head.

"Why would he do that?""

My mother opened her purse again.

This time, she removed a small hospital envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

A little girl.

And written beneath it was a name.

*EMILY CARTER.*

I looked at my mother.

"Who is Emily?""

She began crying.

"Your daughter.""

I couldn't move.

"Is she alive?""

My mother nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

She handed me another piece of paper.

An adoption placement record.

The receiving family's name had been blacked out.

But the signature of the approving physician was clear.

Dr. Ethan Cole.

And the date was the same day Nia had supposedly lost the pregnancy.

I felt the room spin.

My wife hadn't lost our baby.

Someone had taken her.

My phone rang.

Officer Reynolds.

I answered with shaking hands.

"Marcus, we found Vanessa.""

"Where?""

"At a private clinic outside the city.""

"Is she alone?""

"No.""

"Who is with her?""

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Your father.""

I closed my eyes.

"What's happening?""

"She's trying to obtain medical records for a child named Emily Carter.""

My breath caught.

"Emily?""

"Yes.""

Officer Reynolds lowered his voice.

"And Marcus, the clinic has confirmed something.""

"What?""

"Emily is alive.""

I gripped the phone.

"How old is she?""

"Eight years old.""

I looked at the photograph of the newborn baby.

Eight years.

Eight years of birthdays I had missed.

Eight years of a daughter growing up somewhere without me.

Then Officer Reynolds delivered the final blow.

"There's one more thing. According to the adoption records, Emily was never legally adopted.""

I swallowed.

"Then who has been raising her?""

His answer was almost a whisper.

"Your lawyer's wife.""

I looked at the empty space where Robert had been standing.

And suddenly, I understood why he had spent twelve years protecting my father.

May you like

He hadn't just been hiding a crime.

He had been protecting the family that had stolen my child.
