Chapter 13: The Daughter Behind the Locked Door
I didn't remember driving to the clinic.
I remembered my mother's photograph lying on the kitchen table. I remembered Officer Reynolds telling me that Emily was alive. I remembered asking him to repeat the words because my mind refused to accept them.
But I didn't remember the journey.
When I arrived, two police vehicles were parked outside a white medical building surrounded by tall trees.
Officer Reynolds was waiting near the entrance.
"Marcus.""
"Where is she?""
"Inside.""
"Where is my daughter?""
He placed a hand on my shoulder.
"She's safe. But I need you to understand something before you see her.""
I pulled away.
"I've waited eight years.""
"I know. But she's been told a different story about her parents.""
I stopped.
"What story?""
"That her biological father abandoned her. That her biological mother couldn't care for her. And that Robert Hayes and his wife rescued her.""
I felt sick.
"Robert's wife knew?""
"She's been raising Emily since she was a baby.""
I looked through the glass doors.
A little girl sat in the reception area, swinging her legs beneath a chair.
Dark brown hair.
Small hands.
A pink sweater.
She was drawing something on a piece of paper.
I couldn't breathe.
"Is that her?""
Officer Reynolds nodded.
I took one step forward.
Then another.
The little girl looked up.
Her eyes were exactly like Nia's.
I stopped.
For eight years, I had imagined what another child of ours might look like. Whether she would have Nia's smile or my stubbornness. Whether she would love music as much as her mother did.
Now she was sitting ten feet away.
And she didn't know me.
A woman emerged from the hallway.
Robert's wife, Claire.
Her face was pale.
"Marcus.""
I stared at her.
"Where is my daughter?""
Claire glanced toward Emily.
"She's doing well.""
"How long have you known?""
She didn't answer.
"Eight years?"" I asked.
"You've had my daughter for eight years?""
Claire began crying.
"Robert told me Nia had agreed to the arrangement.""
"Did you ever meet Nia?""
"No.""
"Did you ever speak to her?""
"No.""
"Then why did you believe him?""
Claire wiped her cheeks.
"Because he brought me adoption papers. He told me the mother had died.""
I looked at Emily.
"Did you know she was alive?""
Claire shook her head.
"Not until last year.""
My hands clenched.
"And you didn't tell anyone?""
"Robert said he would explain everything.""
"Explain what?""
She lowered her eyes.
"That the papers weren't legal.""
I stared at her.
The truth was becoming more disgusting with every sentence.
Robert had stolen my daughter.
His wife had raised her.
My father had arranged it.
And Dr. Cole had signed the documents that made it possible.
"Did you love her?"" I asked.
Claire looked toward Emily.
"More than anything.""
I hated that answer.
I hated that she could love the child who had been taken from me while knowing the truth.
But I also knew Emily hadn't chosen any of this.
"Does she know?""
Claire nodded.
"We told her this morning.""
"What did you tell her?""
"That her biological parents were Marcus and Nia Carter. That she has a sister named Lily.""
Emily looked up again.
"Are you Marcus?""
Her small voice stopped me.
I crouched.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
She studied my face.
"Are you my daddy?""
I felt tears fill my eyes.
"Yes.""
She looked down at her drawing.
Then she asked:
"Did you know where I was?""
I couldn't answer immediately.
"No, baby. I didn't.""
"Did you look for me?""
The question hurt more than anything else.
"I didn't know you were missing.""
She considered that.
Then she stood and walked toward me.
I held my arms open, uncertain whether she would accept them.
She stopped inches away.
"Do you have pictures of Mommy?""
I nodded.
"Lots of them.""
"Was she pretty?""
I laughed through my tears.
"She was the most beautiful woman I ever knew.""
Emily smiled.
Then she reached into her pocket.
"I have something.""
She pulled out a small folded photograph.
It showed Nia holding a newborn baby.
The back contained a message.
*My little Emily. I will find you. I promise.*
I stared at it.
"Where did you get this?""
"Claire keeps it in a drawer.""
I looked at Claire.
She began crying again.
"I found it among the papers Robert brought home. I couldn't throw it away.""
Emily touched the photograph.
"She looks nice.""
I nodded.
"She was.""
Then Emily asked:
"Can I meet Lily?""
I closed my eyes.
"Yes, sweetheart. I think she'd like that very much.""
Officer Reynolds took Claire into a separate room for questioning.
I remained with Emily until a child specialist arrived.
She told me that Emily needed time, stability, and the chance to process everything without being pressured to choose between the people she knew and the family she had never met.
I agreed.
I would not make another child pay for the decisions of adults.
But before we left, Emily gave me something else.
A small envelope.
"Robert told me to keep this secret," she said.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Nia standing outside a hospital room.
Beside her was a man I recognized.
Dr. Ethan Cole.
On the back, Nia had written:
*He knows where the original birth records are. He also knows what happened to the baby Thomas couldn't find.*
I stared at the sentence.
"What baby?""
Emily shrugged.
"I don't know.""
Officer Reynolds examined the photograph.
"Marcus, we need to get this to the investigation team.""
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
It was Lily.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
"Daddy, when are you coming home?""
"Soon.""
"Mrs. Jenkins says you found my sister.""
I smiled sadly.
"Yes. I did.""
"Is she nice?""
"She's a little scared.""
"So am I.""
I closed my eyes.
"I know, baby.""
"Can she come home with us?""
"Not today. But we're going to make sure she gets to know us.""
Lily paused.
Then she said:
"Can you tell her Mommy loved her too?""
My throat tightened.
"Yes. I promise.""
When the call ended, Officer Reynolds received an update.
His expression changed.
"What's happened?"" I asked.
He looked at me.
"We found Dr. Cole.""
"Where?""
"At his private residence.""
"And?""
"He has agreed to cooperate.""
I felt a flicker of hope.
"Does he know where the original records are?""
Officer Reynolds nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then let's go.""
He hesitated.
"Marcus, there's something else. He says Nia left a final statement with him before she died.""
"What statement?""
Officer Reynolds looked down at the photograph.
"She said the child Thomas was searching for wasn't Emily.""
I stared at him.
"Then who was it?""
He answered quietly.
"She said Thomas had another child.""
May you like
My blood went cold.
And according to Dr. Cole, that child had been living under a false identity for almost thirty years.
