Chapter 8: The Brother Who Was Erased

The name on the paper felt heavier than it should have.

Not because it was unfamiliar.

Because of the way Derrick reacted.

A person can lie with words.

They can hide behind excuses.

They can change details.

But the body tells the truth.

And Derrick’s body had just told us everything.

His hands were shaking.

His breathing had changed.

His eyes were locked on that piece of paper like it was a ghost.

“My brother.””

The words barely left his mouth.

Noah looked at him.

“You have a brother?””

Derrick didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

Because sometimes the hardest truths are not the ones you never knew.

They’re the ones you thought you buried.

Elena stepped closer.

“Derrick?””

He looked at her.

And the fear in his eyes scared me more than anything Victor had said.

“I never told you about him.””

She frowned.

“Why?””

Derrick looked down.

“Because I thought he was gone.””

Marcus stared at the document.

“But he isn’t.””

Derrick took the paper from my hand.

The name sat there.

*Adrian Hale.*

A man none of us had heard about.

A man who had apparently existed in Derrick’s life before Victor.

Before the accident.

Before Noah.

Derrick folded the paper slowly.

“My brother was different.””

Jax crossed his arms.

“Different how?””

Derrick looked toward the empty school parking lot.

Like he was watching another time.

Another life.

“He was older than me by six years.””

He took a breath.

“When we were kids, everyone thought Adrian would take over my father’s company.””

“And did he?””

Derrick shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

Derrick’s jaw tightened.

“Because Adrian refused to become like Victor.””

That sentence caught my attention.

Because it explained something.

Families like Victor’s didn’t create monsters overnight.

They created them by rewarding the worst parts of people.

Derrick continued.

“Adrian was the only person who ever stood up to him.””

Marcus nodded.

“I heard stories.””

Derrick looked at him.

“From who?””

“Employees.””

Marcus looked at the ground.

“They said Adrian was the only one who could tell Victor no.””

A small, bitter smile crossed Derrick’s face.

“That was his biggest mistake.””

Noah listened quietly.

I noticed something.

He wasn’t looking away anymore.

The secrets hurt him.

But he was choosing to hear them.

That was bravery.

Not the kind people put in movies.

The quiet kind.

The kind where you stay when everything inside you wants to run.

“What happened to him?”” Noah asked.

Derrick looked at him.

The question seemed to bring him back.

“Adrian found out something about my father.””

“What?””

Derrick hesitated.

Then said:

“Illegal deals.””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s what I heard too.””

Derrick continued.

“Adrian wanted to report him.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“And Victor stopped him?””

Derrick nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Derrick looked at the document.

“That’s the part I never knew.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“The file says Adrian disappeared.””

Derrick looked up.

“Disappeared?””

Marcus nodded.

“According to official records, he left the country.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Adrian would never leave without telling me.””

The certainty in Derrick’s voice was different from before.

This wasn’t guilt.

This was pain.

“He was my brother.””

Noah looked at him.

“Did you love him?””

Derrick looked surprised by the question.

Then his face softened.

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“He was the first person who ever protected me.””

The words hung there.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Derrick had spent his life looking for protection.

First from Adrian.

Then trying to become it for Noah.

And failing in ways that haunted him.

Marcus suddenly looked at the folder.

“Wait.””

He flipped through the papers.

“What?””

He pulled out another document.

“This isn’t from Victor.””

Derrick frowned.

“What is it?””

Marcus handed it to him.

Derrick read.

Then froze.

“What?””

He looked at Elena.

Then at Noah.

Then at me.

“This is a medical record.””

Nobody understood.

“Whose?””

Derrick’s voice became quiet.

“Adrian’s.””

Marcus looked confused.

“But why would Victor keep medical records?””

Derrick kept reading.

Then his face changed.

“He was alive.””

Noah blinked.

“What?””

Derrick looked up.

“My brother was alive after he disappeared.””

The silence that followed felt impossible.

Because everyone thought they were chasing a ghost.

But ghosts don’t leave paperwork.

Ghosts don’t leave medical records.

Ghosts don’t leave proof.

Maya stepped forward.

“Where was he?””

Derrick looked at the page.

“A private facility.””

Marcus frowned.

“Which one?””

Derrick turned the page.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“It’s the same place.””

“Same place as what?””

Derrick pointed at the accident report.

“The hospital Noah was taken to after the crash.””

A chill moved through me.

The same hospital.

The same time period.

The same place where Victor tried to control the story.

Everything connected.

Jax shook his head.

“This family has more secrets than a government file.””

Nobody laughed.

Because it was true.

Then Noah spoke.

“What does my uncle have to do with me?””

Everyone looked at him.

Derrick didn’t answer.

Not because he didn’t know.

Because he did.

And he didn’t want to say it.

I stepped closer.

“Derrick.””

He looked at me.

“You need to tell him.””

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

“Adrian knew about Victor’s plans.””

“What plans?””

Derrick looked at Noah.

“He knew Victor wanted to control you.””

Noah’s face tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Adrian believed Victor would destroy anyone who stood in his way.””

Marcus added quietly:

“And Adrian found proof.””

“What proof?””

Derrick looked at the document.

“Proof that Victor had been hiding money.””

Jax frowned.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Derrick shook his head.

“Proof that Victor had been building a plan to control the company through Noah.””

The meaning settled over everyone.

Victor didn’t just want his grandson.

He wanted a future.

A future where Noah became a piece on his chessboard.

Then Derrick’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Nobody moved.

Derrick looked at the screen.

His hand tightened.

“Answer it.””

He looked at me.

“You sure?””

I nodded.

“Put it on speaker.””

He pressed the button.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice spoke.

A voice none of us expected.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

“Derrick.””

Derrick’s face went white.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“You need to listen.””

Derrick whispered:

“Adrian?””

Noah looked at him.

Everyone froze.

The voice on the phone gave a quiet breath.

“I’m sorry it took this long.””

Derrick couldn’t speak.

“You’re alive?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The word broke something inside Derrick.

Seven years of anger.

Seven years of questions.

Seven years of believing someone was gone.

Then Adrian spoke again.

“But you need to understand something.””

Derrick gripped the phone.

“What?””

The voice became urgent.

“Victor isn’t the biggest danger.””

Nobody moved.

“Then who is?””

Another pause.

Then Adrian answered:

“The person who has been helping him from the beginning.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Who?””

Adrian said one name.

A name that made Elena step backward.

A name that made Derrick drop the phone slightly.

A name that changed everything.

“Derrick…”

The voice shook.

“Your mother.””

The call ended.

And for the first time all day…

Nobody looked at Victor.

Nobody looked at the documents.

May you like

Nobody looked at the past.

Everyone looked at Elena.
