Chapter 9: The Mother Who Carried The Last Secret

The silence after the call felt different.

Before, every secret had created anger.

Every lie had created questions.

But this one created something worse.

Doubt.

Because nobody wanted to believe it.

Not Derrick.

Not Noah.

Not me.

Especially not Elena.

She stood there in the middle of the school courtyard, surrounded by forty-six bikers, teachers, parents, and her own son.

And for the first time that morning…

she looked completely alone.

Noah stared at her.

Not with anger.

With confusion.

That was harder.

Anger means you still understand the person in front of you.

Confusion means you don’t know who they are anymore.

“Mom?””

Elena’s lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Derrick stepped forward.

“Is it true?””

Her eyes moved to him.

The question carried twenty years of history.

Twenty years of love.

Twenty years of trust.

And now one sentence had shaken all of it.

“Derrick…”

His voice became sharper.

“Is it true?””

Elena looked down.

That was the answer.

Derrick took a step back.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“No, you don’t get to stay quiet.””

Noah flinched.

I watched Derrick carefully.

Because I knew that feeling.

The moment when someone you love becomes someone you don’t recognize.

“Tell me.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I never wanted this.””

Derrick laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that.””

He pointed toward the street.

“Victor said he was protecting us.””

He looked at Marcus.

“You said you were scared.””

Then he looked at Elena.

“And now you’re saying you never wanted this.””

His voice broke.

“Everybody had a reason.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Because they were true.

Everyone had a reason.

But Noah had still been the one paying the price.

Elena wiped her face.

“I was not helping Victor.””

“Then why did Adrian say your name?””

She looked at Derrick.

“Because Adrian doesn’t know everything.””

That sentence stopped him.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked at Noah.

And I knew immediately.

Whatever she was about to say was the final piece.

The one nobody wanted.

“Noah needs to hear the truth.””

The boy looked at her.

“I’m listening.””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“When you were born, Victor wanted control over everything.””

She looked at Derrick.

“Your father fought him.””

Derrick nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“You don’t know all of it.””

Everyone went quiet.

“Victor wasn’t only threatening Derrick.””

She looked at Noah.

“He threatened me too.””

Noah’s face changed.

“What did he say?””

Elena looked away.

“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would make sure Noah disappeared.””

The courtyard became still.

Derrick frowned.

“Cooperate with what?””

Elena looked at him.

“With watching.””

The word was barely audible.

Derrick froze.

“What?””

“I was supposed to report where you were.””

His expression collapsed.

“You?””

Elena immediately shook her head.

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“I never gave him your location.””

“But you were working with him.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I was pretending.””

Nobody spoke.

Elena continued.

“After the accident, Victor believed Derrick was gone forever.””

Derrick frowned.

“What?””

“He thought the crash killed you.””

The realization moved through the group.

“But you survived.””

Elena nodded.

“Barely.””

Derrick stared.

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because Victor made sure you were hidden.””

Marcus looked confused.

“How?””

Elena looked at him.

“Your father had people everywhere.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Because he knew.

“He controlled hospital records.””

Elena nodded.

“He controlled police reports.””

She looked at Derrick.

“And he controlled the story.””

Derrick shook his head.

“But why would he tell you I was gone?””

“Because he needed me scared.””

The words came out painfully.

“He told me you died.””

Derrick froze.

“What?””

Elena cried silently.

“He showed me fake documents.””

She looked at Noah.

“He told me if I searched for you, he would come after Noah.””

Derrick looked broken.

“So you thought I was dead?””

Elena nodded.

“For years.””

The anger on his face changed.

Not gone.

But mixed with something else.

Pain.

Because suddenly the story had another layer.

Another person who had been trapped.

Noah looked at his mother.

“But you knew about Dad later.””

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

“Three years ago.””

Noah looked away.

“Three years?””

“Yes.””

“And you still didn’t tell me?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

Noah whispered:

“Everybody was afraid.””

Nobody answered.

Because again…

he was right.

Then Marcus stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“If Elena wasn’t helping Victor…”

He looked at the phone where Adrian’s call had ended.

“Why would Adrian say she was?””

Elena’s expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

Derrick frowned.

“Unless…”

He stopped.

I saw it happen.

A realization.

A terrible one.

“Unless what?””

Derrick looked at Marcus.

“Adrian wasn’t talking about Elena.””

Everyone froze.

“What do you mean?””

Derrick looked at the school.

At the parents.

At the cameras.

At all the chaos from the morning.

“He said my mother.””

Not Elena.

His mother.

Victor’s wife.

A woman nobody had mentioned.

A woman who had disappeared from every story.

Marcus looked through the documents again.

Then stopped.

“Oh.””

“What?””

He turned the paper around.

There was a signature.

A name.

A name none of us had noticed before.

*Margaret Hale.*

Victor’s wife.

Derrick stared.

“My mother.””

Elena exhaled.

“Your mother was alive?””

Derrick nodded slowly.

“I thought she left after Adrian disappeared.””

Marcus looked terrified.

“She didn’t.””

Derrick looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She stayed.””

The air felt heavier.

“Where?””

Marcus looked toward the road.

“I don’t know.””

Then Derrick’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Adrian.

Everyone stared.

Derrick opened it.

A photograph appeared.

An old woman sitting in a room.

Behind her were stacks of files.

And beside her…

was Victor.

Alive.

The message below the picture said:

*She has been controlling everything from the beginning.*

Derrick looked up.

“What is this?””

Marcus stepped closer.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Margaret Hale died.””

Nobody spoke.

Derrick looked at him.

“What did you say?””

Marcus pointed at the photo.

“The woman in that picture…”

His voice shook.

“She’s been dead for seven years.””

Noah stepped closer.

“Then who is she?””

Nobody answered.

Then the phone rang.

Adrian.

Derrick answered immediately.

“Adrian, explain.””

A weak voice came through.

“I don’t have much time.””

Derrick gripped the phone.

“Who is in that picture?””

A pause.

Then Adrian said:

“That’s not my mother.””

Everyone froze.

Derrick whispered:

“Then who is it?””

Adrian’s voice became urgent.

“Someone Victor brought into our family before Noah was born.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

A long silence.

Then Adrian said:

“The woman who helped Victor create the accident.””

Derrick’s face went pale.

“No.””

Adrian continued.

“And Derrick…”

“Yes?””

“You need to get Noah away from her.””

Derrick looked around.

“Why?””

The answer came softly.

Almost like a warning.

“Because she isn’t trying to take his inheritance.””

A pause.

“She’s trying to erase him.””

The call ended.

And at that exact moment…

a woman appeared at the school entrance.

An elderly woman.

Walking slowly.

Smiling gently.

Looking harmless.

Until she looked directly at Noah.

May you like

And said:

“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet my grandson.””
