Chapter 12: The Last Witness

The Bennett family estate stood on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by tall iron gates and old oak trees.

It had been abandoned for nearly a decade.

Evelyn had grown up there.

Thomas had been born there.

And according to Evelyn, Robert Haines had been hiding in its underground wine cellar for the past three weeks.

David parked outside the gates.

“Are you sure he's here?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Robert always believed that if he stayed close to the family property, he could control what happened to it.””

Arthur checked the security camera.

“There's power inside.””

Margaret looked at the house.

“Who owns it now?””

“The Bennett family trust,” Evelyn replied.

“Then why is Robert staying here?””

“Because Richard Hale has been paying the property taxes through a shell company.””

David opened the car door.

“Let's go.””

Evelyn stopped him.

“One thing first.””

She looked at Jayden, who was sitting in the back seat with Mrs. Parker and Amara.

“Sweetheart, I need you to stay here with Mrs. Parker.””

Jayden frowned.

“Why?””

“Because the people inside might be dangerous.””

“But I want to help.””

Evelyn took his hand.

“You already have.””

Jayden looked down.

“Will you come back?””

Evelyn kissed his forehead.

“Always.””

David and Arthur entered through a side door.

The house smelled of dust and old wood.

A chandelier hung above the staircase, its crystal pieces covered in cobwebs.

On the wall were photographs of three generations of Bennetts.

David stopped at one.

It showed Evelyn holding a newborn Thomas.

“Hard to believe this all started here,” he murmured.

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“Thomas wasn't always like this.””

Evelyn heard him.

“No. He wasn't.””

They moved through the dining room and toward a narrow staircase leading to the cellar.

At the bottom, David noticed fresh footprints.

“Someone's been here recently.””

Arthur drew his flashlight.

“Stay behind me.””

A metallic sound came from the cellar.

Then a voice.

“Who's there?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Robert. It's Evelyn.””

Silence.

A lock clicked.

The cellar door opened slightly.

An elderly man with thinning gray hair peered out.

When he saw Evelyn, his face drained of color.

“Madam Bennett?””

“Hello, Robert.””

He opened the door.

“I thought you were dead.””

“So did a lot of people.””

Robert looked at Arthur.

Then at David.

His shoulders slumped.

“You shouldn't have come.””

David stepped forward.

“We need your signature.””

Robert shook his head.

“I can't.””

“You notarized a fraudulent guardianship order.””

“I was instructed to.””

“By Thomas?””

Robert nodded.

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“You helped him forge my family's documents.””

Robert looked at the floor.

“I had no choice.””

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“There's always a choice.””

Robert's eyes filled.

“Thomas threatened my daughter.””

David frowned.

“Your daughter?””

“She lives in Boston. He sent me photographs of her apartment. He told me that if I refused to cooperate, she would disappear.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“And you believed him?””

Robert nodded.

“I've seen what he does.””

David placed the emergency trust appointment on the table.

“We need you to certify the original document. Without your signature, Thomas can transfer the remaining money tomorrow.””

Robert studied the papers.

His hands trembled.

“Is the boy alive?””

“Yes,” Evelyn replied.

“Is he safe?””

“For now.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Then I need to tell you something.””

He reached into a cabinet and removed a small brown folder.

Inside were copies of emails, bank instructions, and a list of payments.

David began reading.

Then his expression changed.

“These aren't just transfers.””

Robert nodded.

“They're payments to people who helped cover up the original theft.””

David scanned the names.

The district attorney.

Two former police officers.

Three bank executives.

And one name that made him stop.

*DANIELLE BENNETT.*

David looked up.

“What is this?””

Robert shook his head.

“It's a payment authorization. But Danielle never received the money.””

“Why is her name here?””

“Thomas created a false account using her identity. He wanted it to look as though she had participated in the theft.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“That explains why he wanted her signature.””

Robert nodded.

“He intended to make her the scapegoat. If she signed the guardianship documents, he could claim she had willingly transferred custody of Jayden while secretly benefiting from the stolen funds.””

David stared at the papers.

“He was going to blame his own daughter.””

Robert looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Arthur slammed his fist against the table.

“Thomas has gone too far.””

Evelyn remained silent.

Then she asked:

“Robert, do you know where the original ownership papers are?””

He nodded.

“In the central vault.””

David frowned.

“I thought you said they were destroyed.””

“I said Thomas wanted everyone to believe they were destroyed.””

Robert removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a steel door behind a bank archive wall.

“The founders' vault.””

Margaret examined it.

“That's at headquarters?””

“Yes.””

“Who can open it?””

Robert looked at Evelyn.

“Only the original three trustees.””

David counted on his fingers.

“Evelyn, Arthur, and Robert.””

Robert nodded.

“Thomas cannot access it. Neither can Richard.””

Evelyn took the envelope.

“Then we're going to the bank.””

Robert hesitated.

“There's one more thing.””

David turned.

“What?””

Robert looked directly at him.

“Thomas knows about the vault. He has been trying to obtain the original ownership documents for years.””

“Why?””

“Because the documents contain a second clause.””

Evelyn's expression darkened.

“What clause?””

Robert swallowed.

“The founder's removal provision.””

David frowned.

“Explain.””

“If the controlling trust is found to have been established through fraud, the bank's ownership automatically transfers to a temporary independent receiver.””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“And Thomas wants to prove the trust was fraudulent.””

“Yes. But there's another part.””

Robert looked at David.

“The receiver is not appointed by the board.””

“Then who appoints them?””

Robert pointed toward Jayden's name on the emergency trust document.

“The protected beneficiary.””

David stared.

“Jayden?””

Robert nodded.

“If the trust is invalidated, the person who appoints the receiver is the child himself, acting through the independent guardian.””

Margaret slowly understood.

“Thomas wants the trust destroyed so he can trigger the clause?””

Robert shook his head.

“No. He wants the trust destroyed before Jayden can exercise his rights.””

Evelyn looked at David.

“That is why he has been chasing the boy.””

David's phone vibrated.

A message from the hospital.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”” Arthur asked.

David read aloud.

Danielle Bennett has been discharged from intensive care following a significant improvement. However, she has requested immediate police protection after receiving an anonymous threat.

Evelyn looked relieved.

“She's getting better.””

David nodded.

But another message appeared.

This one came from Margaret's security team.

Mr. Hale has entered the bank headquarters. He is accompanied by four men. He has ordered the immediate transfer of the $31.6 million.

David checked the time.

The transfer was scheduled for 8:00 a.m.

It was already 7:42.

“We have eighteen minutes,” he said.

Evelyn grabbed her coat.

“Then we move.””

They drove directly to Bennett National headquarters.

Inside the building, the executive floor was already in chaos.

Richard Hale stood in the main conference room, surrounded by lawyers and senior managers.

A large screen displayed the pending transfer.

“Authorize it,” Richard ordered.

The finance director hesitated.

“Sir, the account is protected by the original community trust.””

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

“The trust is under legal challenge. We have authority to proceed.””

“Not without an emergency trustee appointment.””

Richard smiled coldly.

“Then consider this your last instruction as finance director.””

He turned toward the door.

And froze.

Evelyn Bennett stood in the doorway.

Beside her were Arthur Whitmore, David, Margaret, and Robert Haines.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Richard slowly smiled.

“Madam Bennett. I thought you were dead.””

Evelyn stepped into the room.

“Apparently, that's a rumor this company keeps spreading.””

Richard looked at Robert.

“You traitor.””

Robert lowered his head.

“I've made enough mistakes.””

Richard turned toward the finance director.

“Complete the transfer.””

David placed the emergency trust document on the table.

“Don't.””

Richard laughed.

“You don't have the authority to stop me.””

David looked toward Robert.

“Then tell him.””

Robert stepped forward.

“I am an original trust commissioner. I have verified the appointment of an emergency trustee.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“That's impossible.””

Evelyn placed her hand on the document.

“Nothing is impossible when the original papers still exist.””

Richard looked at the screen.

The transfer timer showed eight minutes remaining.

He suddenly reached for his phone.

“Thomas, we have a problem.””

David heard the call connect.

Then Thomas's voice came through.

“What?””

“Your mother is here.””

Silence.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Destroy the vault.””

David's eyes widened.

“Stop!””

But Richard had already pressed a button beneath the conference table.

A red warning light flashed across the screen.

<badge color="danger">SECURITY ALERT</badge>

*CENTRAL VAULT ACCESS OVERRIDE INITIATED.*

Margaret looked at David.

“Someone is inside the vault.””

Evelyn went pale.

“That's impossible.””

David turned.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because the only person who knows the emergency access code is my grandson.””

Everyone looked toward the door.

And at that exact moment, Jayden's voice came through David's phone.

“Mr. David?””

David answered immediately.

“Jayden? Where are you?””

“At the bank.””

“What?””

“Mommy said she wanted to see Grandma's building.””

David's blood ran cold.

“Where exactly are you, son?””

Jayden hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“I'm in the room with the big silver door.””

Evelyn dropped the documents.

“Jayden, don't touch anything!””

May you like

But before anyone could move, a mechanical alarm began screaming through the headquarters.

And the vault door started closing.
