Chapter 13: The Boy Behind the Silver Door

“JAYDEN, DON'T TOUCH THE DOOR!””

Evelyn's scream echoed through the conference room.

David was already running.

He pushed through the executive offices, nearly knocking over a security guard as he headed toward the central vault.

“Where is the child?”” he shouted.

A receptionist pointed toward the restricted corridor.

“He went through the archive entrance with a woman!””

David stopped.

“What woman?””

“I couldn't see her face. She said she was his grandmother.””

Evelyn caught up with him, her breathing uneven.

“That's impossible. I'm here.””

Arthur grabbed David's shoulder.

“Someone has taken him.””

The three of them rushed toward the vault.

Behind them, Margaret ordered security to lock down every floor.

“Check every exit! Nobody leaves this building!””

Inside the conference room, Richard Hale was trying to slip out through a side door.

Robert Haines blocked his path.

“Not this time, Richard.””

Richard glared.

“Move.””

“You've spent twenty years protecting Thomas. I'm finished helping you.””

Richard reached inside his jacket.

Robert stepped back.

“Security!””

Two officers rushed into the room.

Richard was restrained before he could reach whatever he had hidden.

Meanwhile, David arrived at the vault corridor.

The silver door was almost completely closed.

He struck the emergency release button.

Nothing happened.

“Open it!”” he shouted.

A security technician ran toward them.

“It's been manually locked from inside!””

Evelyn stared at the door.

“Jayden!””

A small voice answered through the metal.

“Grandma?””

She pressed both hands against the cold surface.

“Baby, are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Are you alone?””

There was a pause.

Then Jayden whispered:

“There's a lady in here.””

David looked at Evelyn.

“What lady?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Jayden, listen carefully. Don't give her anything.””

“But she knows Mommy.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“What's her name?””

Jayden's voice trembled.

“She says her name is Vanessa.””

Arthur suddenly went pale.

David turned.

“Who is Vanessa?””

Arthur swallowed.

“Thomas's wife.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“Thomas was never married.””

Arthur looked toward the vault.

“He was. For two years. Before the woman disappeared.””

David frowned.

“Disappeared?””

“Vanessa was the first person who helped Thomas establish the shell companies. When she realized what he was doing, she tried to expose him.””

Evelyn's voice became cold.

“She wasn't just his wife. She was the original financial architect of the fraud.””

David pressed his hand against the vault.

“Jayden, move away from her.””

A muffled sound came from inside.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Hello, David. It's been a long time.””

David froze.

“Let the boy go.””

Vanessa laughed.

“I'm not hurting him.””

“Open the door.””

“Not until I get what I came for.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You already know the trust documents are here.””

“I want the original ownership papers.””

“You cannot have them.””

Vanessa's voice hardened.

“Then the boy stays with me.””

David's face turned white.

“Don't you dare threaten him.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Jayden has the silver key, doesn't he?””

Inside the vault, Jayden looked down at the key in his hand.

His grandmother had told him never to give it to anyone.

Vanessa noticed.

“There it is. Such a beautiful little key.””

Jayden stepped backward.

“Grandma said it's mine.””

Vanessa crouched.

“Your grandmother tells a lot of stories.””

“She's not a liar.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Then perhaps she should have told you what your grandfather really did.””

Jayden shook his head.

“Don't talk about him.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Your grandfather didn't steal that money alone. Your grandmother knew about everything. She helped move it.””

Outside, Evelyn pressed her forehead against the door.

“Jayden, don't listen to her.””

Vanessa stood.

“Your grandmother used the money to build her empire. Then she blamed Thomas when things went wrong.””

Jayden looked confused.

“That's not true.””

“Ask her about the children who lost their savings.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The words were designed to hurt.

And they were based on a carefully constructed lie.

The original trust had been created to protect those savings, but Thomas and Vanessa had moved millions through accounts designed to disguise the theft.

Vanessa had helped prepare the false records.

Now she was using them to confuse a child.

David turned toward the security technician.

“Can you override the door?””

“Not without triggering the internal pressure lock.””

“How long?””

“Five minutes, perhaps.””

“We don't have five minutes!””

Inside, Vanessa reached toward Jayden.

“Give me the key.””

Jayden moved away.

“No.””

“Don't make this difficult.””

“It's Grandma's.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

She grabbed his wrist.

Jayden cried out.

Outside, Evelyn screamed.

“LET HIM GO!””

Then Jayden noticed something.

A small brass plate beneath the vault's control panel.

He remembered his grandmother showing him a similar plate in the old archive room.

She had once told him that important doors had two ways of opening.

One for people with authority.

And one for people with the right to enter.

Jayden pulled his wrist free.

He reached toward the panel.

Vanessa spun around.

“What are you doing?””

Jayden inserted the silver key into the small brass slot.

A soft click sounded.

The vault lights changed from red to green.

Outside, the security technician stared.

“What did he do?””

Evelyn began crying.

“He activated the beneficiary release.””

The silver door unlocked.

David pulled it open.

Vanessa immediately tried to push past him.

But Arthur stepped in front of her.

“Not another step.””

Two security officers seized her.

David rushed inside.

“Jayden!””

The boy ran into his arms.

“Mr. David!””

David lifted him.

“Are you hurt?””

Jayden shook his head.

“My wrist hurts.””

David saw the red marks.

His expression darkened.

“I'm sorry, son.””

Evelyn rushed toward them and wrapped both of them in her arms.

“Thank God.””

Vanessa was being escorted away when she began laughing.

“You think you've won?””

David turned.

“It's over.””

“No. Thomas has already transferred the money.””

Margaret appeared at the entrance.

“That's impossible. The account is frozen.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Not the community account.””

She looked directly at Evelyn.

“The other one.””

Evelyn's face changed.

“What other one?””

Vanessa laughed again.

“The account you never knew existed.””

Then she looked at Jayden.

“Your grandmother has been hiding more than one secret, little boy.””

David handed Jayden to Evelyn.

He turned toward the vault's central table.

On it lay the original ownership documents.

Beneath them was a small sealed envelope.

Evelyn approached it slowly.

Her name was written across the front.

She opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to her late husband.

Evelyn, if you're reading this, Thomas has found the account I created before his birth. There is only one way to stop him. Tell Jayden the truth about his father.

Evelyn's hands began to shake.

Jayden looked up.

“Grandma?””

She lowered the letter.

“There's something about your father that you need to know.””

David stared.

“Danielle told us Jayden's father abandoned them.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“That's what she was told.””

Jayden's eyes widened.

“Is my daddy alive?””

Evelyn knelt.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

The boy's lips trembled.

“Where is he?””

Evelyn looked toward the corridor.

Then she said the words nobody expected.

“Your father is the man Thomas has been trying to find for seven years.””

And as the elevator doors opened behind them, a familiar figure stepped out.

A man with Jayden's eyes.

May you like

A man carrying a photograph of the little boy.

“Jayden,” he whispered.
